Conversación en Grupos
“Remember who else they called such names.” – Father Grande (in response to Romero calling him “radical and subversive” Who is he referring to? Do you agree with the reference? Why or why not?
Romero believes that economic injustice is the root of the problems in El Salvador. Discuss and suggest different examples that show economic injustice in El Salvador. Do you think that these injustices are the cause of the problem?
In the movie, Father Morantes decides to carry a gun. Romero says, “You’re not defending, you’re attacking…and you lose God, just as they have.” Father Morantes says he has no choice. Do you agree? What would you do?
Lt. Columna compares the wealthy to the U.S. pioneers. He says they just want what the North Americans have. He also talks about how terrible the priests and communists are. Do you agree with any of this? Does this justify what they military is doing?
Romero tells the people in the church, “You are the Jesus now.” What does he mean by that? Do you agree with him?
Si me matan, resucitaré en el pueblo salvadoreño.
(Dos semanas antes de su muerte)
It is a land made holy by the blood of so many martyrs, shed between the later 1970s and the
1990s. As many as 75,000 martyrs, most of them common folk, unknown outside their own
Salvadoran families. Most of those people were killed by the Salvadoran military and its death
squads, supported by U.S. weapons and misdirected political interests.
Most notable among those martyrs are Archbishop Oscar Romero, six Jesuit priests from Spain, and
four Maryknoll women from the U.S.
