“There are some really ancy trucks with big motors

that enter the bog every year,” Bennett said. “It’s quite a

nice show.”

route, according to Steve Birdwell,

who is co-commander o the Cadillac

Area Honor Guard with Greg Burk.

Veterans who still have some pepin their marching boots will be able

to walk the route. Family members

who have lost their veteran or have

one who is unable to make it to the

parade also may take part.

The parade begins at 10 a.m., pre-

ceded at 9:30 a.m. by a laying o a

wreath on Lake Cadillac near City

Dock to remember sailors.

The parade comes to a halt and

the ceremony itsel begins at 11 a.m.

Veterans still gather at American

Legion Post No. 300 to march past the

courthouse to the memorial at thecorner o Prospect and Main streets.

At 10 a.m., the ceremony begins,

consisting o putting the fag at hal

sta, laying a wreath, playing the

“Star Spangled Banner,” and a 21-

gun salute.

The honor guard also will make

a stop at Lake Missaukee to lay a

wreath in remembrance o sailors

and move on to the Lake City Cem-

That record was one o our state titles Mi-

chell won, making her the frst emale athlete in

Michigan to do that since Mason County East-

ern’s Maria Shoop in 1979.

Michell’s specialties are the 100 hurdles, 300

hurdles, long jump and 200 dash but she could

pop up, too, in the 400 dash, 100 dash or else-

where.

She’s signed with the University o Michigan

or track and feld, beginning this all.

Another local athlete who will be continuing

his track career on the NCAA Division I level is

Norman, a Cadillac senior. Norman, a standout

ootball player, has chosen the throws — shot

put, discus, hammer throw — at Michigan State

University.

He owns the News Meet record in the shot put

and is closing in on the discus mark. Norman

won the MHSAA Division 2 title in the shot put

last spring, with a throw o a little more than 60

eet.

The meet is a wrap up to the season or some

and or others, it’s a warm-up or the state f-

nals.It eatures student-athletes rom Buckley,

Cadillac, Evart, Lake City, Manton, Marion,

McBain, Mesick, Northern Michigan Christian,

Pine River and Reed City.

It begins Memorial Day with the Parade o

Athletes around 3:30 p.m. and the running

events about 45 minutes ater that.

Be sure to keep an eye on the Cadillac News

or updates as the meet approaches. You can

also track who is likely to qualiy or the meet

when the Cadillac News runs its weekly honor

rolls with the best perormances in each event.

The day ater the meet, the Cadillac News willannounce one male and one emale scholar-

ship winner. The award, based on the day’s gate

receipts, is based upon meet perormance, aca-

demic perormance and extracirricular involve-

ment at their school and in their community.

When you trade your steering wheel or a pilot’s

wheel and tap the throttle, keep in mind that even when

you’re out on the open water, you still have to ollow the

“rules o the o the road.”

All vessels must have a personal otation device or

each passenger either on board or being towed. Check

the lie vest or other device or the U.S. Coast Guard

designation. I it doesn’t bear this stamp, the device is

not approved or use as a PFD.

At the start o each season, take stock o the PFDs

you have on hand. Store them on the boat where they

are readily accessible, and as a pilot, make sure your

passengers know where to fnd them. It only takes aminute to point them out even i they are right in the

open.

Special rules apply to children’s PFDs. They always

must be wearing one when on an open deck. Children

under age 12 must wear a Type I or a Type II device.

Operators o personal watercrat such as jet skis also

must have a Type I, II or III device or each person on

board or being towed. Throwable PFDs are not accept

able or all crat. Only vessels under 16 eet, as well as

canoes and kayaks, may be operated with either wear-

able or throwable PFDs on board.

Know navigational rules beore you hit the water, in

cluding the rules or which vessel has right-o-way. Be

able to recognize other vessels by their running lights

Just like on the road, excessive speed and alcohol can

be a recipe or disaster.

You’re out on the water to have un. Don’t spoil it or

yoursel or others. Be respectul o wildlie, and watc

your wake where it might disturb others using thewater or cause damage. Also keep in mind that sound

travels ar out on the lake: be considerate o others on

the shore on quiet evenings.

CADILLAC — The rumblings of pure American muscle

will be heard for miles as classic car owners tour north-

ern Michigan this summer.

More than 125 cars will cruise 610 miles for the fourth-

annual Lakeshore to Lakeshore promotional tour. From

June 9 to 13, classic Fords, Chevys and a list of other vin-tage cars will drive into downtown Cadillac.

The tour of antique cars will start in Flint before head-

ing to Rockford, passing through the village of Hart and

into Cadillac on Sunday. Classic car lovers will be able to

see the trail of antique cars drive into Cadillac on June

9. Live music, a car show, food vendors and shopping will

be available downtown on Mitchell Street between Cass

Street and Pine Street from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“It’s such a tremendous event for downtown merchan

and the community,” said Al Hatch, Back to Bricks

chairman. “These tours are just lined with thousands o

people.”Last year the tour had a tremendous turnout in Cadil-

lac, Hatch said. A total of 135 classic cars were featured

the car show last year. The tour attracts a variety of aut

Thousands of residents and visitors from

around the area and state will converge on LakeCity and Cadillac to partake in events geared at

having fun and celebrating the Fourth of July.

Lake City’s Greatest Fourth in the North is a

staple of the annual celebration of our country’s

birth and 2013 will be no different. This year’s

GFITN will start July 2 and continues through

July 7. There will be new events and acts as well as

things people are familiar with.

The Grand Parade, which occurs on July 4,

usually has about 120 entries and runs about two

hours. It is one of the oldest events and one of the

biggest during the week. The kids parade will be

held on Sunday, July 7.See Food, fun and fireworks on page 31

Lake City Area Chamber o Commerce Administrative

Assistant Kim Mosher said this year’s theme is “Racingto the Greatest Fourth in the North.”

To coincide with the theme, estival goers will have the

opportunity to win a 2013 Camaro in the annual car rae

(R20995). This year the car will be anything but boring

as it will be Inerno Orange Metallic with racing stripes.

While the car is the main prize, other prizes also are top

notch.

Second place will win a Richard Petty Rookie Driv-

ing Experience while third place gets a season’s pass to

Merritt Speedway or a amily o our. Finally, the ourth

prize will be a handmade doll by Gene Schooley.

In addition to the parade, there are numerous events

and acts leading up to Independence Day. They include

vendors in the city park; the carnival; many entertain-

ers/street perormers; a volleyball tournament; ree en-

tertainment nightly and, o course, freworks over Lake

Missaukee at dusk on the Fourth o July.

Coming back to this year’s GFITN is the Petoskey

Steel Drum Band as well as Brian Lorente and the Usual

Suspects. Other acts coming this year to the main stage

include Detour, The Monkey Grinders, Raion Taiko and

Marimbamania.

For those not amiliar with Detour they play bluegrass

while The Monkey Grinders play rock and roll that spans

rom the 1970s to today. Raion Taiko will bring the unique

stylings o Japanese percussion.

Also new this year will be the release o what Moser

hopes is hundreds i not thousands o sky lanterns at

10:15 p.m. on July 6. The hope is to light up the sky around

Lake Missaukee.

In CadIllaC, Gabby Chapman o the Cadillac Area

Visitors Bureau said ater the success o last year’s cel-

ebration, it was a no-brainer that it would be held again

in 2013. Last year’s celebration drew crowds to downtow

Cadillac thanks to events such as the annual parade,

musical entertainment in the Rotary Arts Pavilion, a

Water Fire Tribute to veterans, a motorcycle show, and

freworks.

Joinging those events will be a wrestling extravaganz

in the city park which will highlight proessional wres-

EVART — It is that time of year in Evart, when the

serene sounds of stringed instruments wafting through

town can only mean one thing — it’s time for the Dulci-

mer Funfest.

For the 41st summer, the Non-electric Musical Funfest,

otherwise known as the Dulcimer Funfest descends on

the Osceola County Fairgrounds this July.

Riding the musical wave will be hundreds of acoustic

music enthusiasts, musicians — as well as the listeners,

jammers and students.Every year musicians from all across the country gath-

er in the largest festival devoted to the love of the acous-

tic sounds of the hammered dulcimer, and this year’s

festival, taking place July 18 to 21, will be no exception.

“There is just no other festival like this. This is a family,

really, and everyone works together to make it the suc-

cess that it is,” explained Original Dulcimer Players Clu

Vice President Pat Harkins.

And the success of the Funfest is certainly not in dis-

pute with an estimated 6,000 attendees last year, coming

from across the country and even around the globe.

Known for the frequently impromptu jam sessions

breaking all over the fairgrounds, seasoned professiona

sit elbow to elbow with novice musicians in a casual an

supportive atmosphere.

The other part of the festival is the legendary concertwhere some of the best in the business take center stage

for popular shows that pack the fairground bandstand,

and surrounding area, often with thousands of listener

enjoying the shows.

shops, and history, visit www.dulcimers.com

Some fairs are about the food. Some focus on the fair ride fun.

But in Osceola County, the fair is about the kids, the

families, and the agriculture roots that still have a sub-

stantial hold on the county.

The Osceola County Fair, held the week of July 29 in

Evart is a mix of old-time family fun, with a decidedly

old school focus on the showmanship and craftsmanshi

of the kids.

The week-long fair kicks off Monday, July 29 with

small animal judging and a garden tractor pull.

On Tuesday, animal judging continues, a pony pull

takes place, and the amusement rides open.

Wednesday, July 31 is “Kids Day”, where a $12 armban

is good all day and kids can enter for a chance to win an

Xbox 360 or an iPod.

Rides, rodeos, animal judging continues through the

weekend with the auction taking place on Thursday.

For more information, visit the Osceola County Fair-

grounds website at www. osceolacountyfairgrounds.

To understand gol and why people love to play it just

watch the movie, “The Legend o Bagger Vance.”

In the flm starring Will Smith and Matt Damon, char-

acter Hardy Greaves played by J. Michael Moncrie sums

up why he loves the game o gol. For most who play gol,

the line and the movie depict why it is such a beloved

sport.

“Ask anybody. It’s un. It’s hard and you stand out there

on that green, green grass, and it’s just you and the ball

and there ain’t nobody to beat up on but yoursel; just like

Mister Newnan keeps hittin’ himsel with the gol clubevery time he gets angry. He’s broken his toe three times

on account o it. It’s the only game I know that you can

call a penalty on yoursel, i you’re honest, which most

people are. There just ain’t no other game like it.”

Whatever it is about gol, once a person is hooked they

are hooked or a lietime. There also is no doubt there is

no better place to be in the summer than northern Mich

gan when it comes to golfng.

Chipping, driving, putting or punching, or residents

and visitors to the Cadillac area the options are nearly

endless when it comes to golfng.

Whether it is staying close to Cadillac or venturing ou

into the surrounding areas, there is a course that fts a

person’s abilities and skill level.

Here is a list o the courses, where they are located,

how many holes and how to set up a tee time. Now the

only thing let to do is head out to the links and play around.

CADILLAC — Most o us start o as artists and just

don’t know it.

As children we color, paint, cut and paste and cre-ate various works o art o multiple sizes and shapes.

Some are on white paper, construction paper or made o

noodles. These works o art may never see an exhibit or

museum but they usually make their way to the coveted

spot on the rerigerator.

Eventually, most o us move away rom making these

precious works o art on a daily basis to excel at other

things. For some, however, that love o creating stayed

and eventually they became artisans as adults.

I can be a hobby, part-time thing or their jobs. On July

19 and 20, the Cadillac Arts Festival will be held again

and 100 artists will again food Cadillac City Park with

their wares. This summer marks the 45th year or theevent, according to organizer Jim Smith.

Although the event will look similar to previous

years, Smith said there are a ew tweaks to the schedule.

First and oremost is the time change on Friday, July

19. Exhibit booths now will be open at 9 a.m. instead o

noon and will remain open until 9 p.m. On Saturday, Ju-

ly 20, the booths will open at 10 a.m. and close at 5 p.m.

Artists booths and ood vendors will be the main at-

tractions on July 19 but multiple entertainment optionwill be available on July 20.

Those events include the annual Kids Create-In whe

children can make crats, and the String Petting Zoo,

where children can try out various stringed instru-

ments thanks to the Cadillac Strings Association.

The Rotary Perorming Arts Pavilion also will host

live entertainment including the Cadillac Smyphony

Orchestra, Clam Lake Band, a youth orchestra rom

Blue Lake, Billy Strings, Don Julin and Blake Elliott.

There also will be a second stage set up in another are

o the estival where various local musicians will play

throughout the day, Smith said.

“It is two days o entertainment and un,” Smith sai“People will see some awully good art and enjoy good

demonstrations o artisans rom the past.”

Updated inormation will be available as the events

gets closer on the Cadillac Arts Council’s Facebook

page as well as in the Cadillac News and cadillacnews

REED CITY — For a few years,

it looked like the proud Reed City

summer festival known as the GreatAmerican Crossroads Festival might

die a slow death.

But many in town wouldn’t, and

couldn’t let that happen, and thanks

to a resurgence of community vol-

unteers pitching in, each year the

city’s summer fest has grown and

thrived, with a successful formula of

contests and kids games, music, food

and a whole lot of Coyote pride.

“It is all about the games and the

food and the family fun,” said Suzie

Williams of the Reed City Chamber.

“People plan their summers

around coming back to town for the

festival, they don’t want to miss it,”

she said.

That includes the legendary an-

nual favorites like the softball tour-

naments, car show, arts and crafts

and kids games, just to name a fewof the events that bring out locals

and draw back former residents for

the Crossroads fest.

The fun begins with the Wednes-

day, Aug. 14 pageant, where Miss

Reed City will be crowned and will

reign over the jam-packed, four days

of fun.

On Friday, the festival heats up

with arts and crafts, music and

kids games in the city parks, and

Saturday is full of parades, games,

a car show and much more, includ-

ing “The World’s Slowest Bike

Race” and much more to delight the

crowds.

“There is something for everyone

to do, at any age,” said Williams.

BUCKLEY — Step into the past and witness history inmotion during the Buckley Old Engine Show at the show

grounds.

More than 200 acres o land will eature attractions

such as old time print making, more than 600 gas and oil

engines and music.

From August 15 to 18, guests will have the chance to go

on a mile ride on an actual 1918 steam train, shop or an-

tiques at the fea market or learn to make soaps, rope and

candles at the old time necessities building. Jim Luper,

who handles the show’s public relations said guests oten

can’t believe their eyes.

The event is like a live museum that draws amilies

rom around the state, he said.“It’s not just a stationary museum. You’ll experience

how things actually work,” Luper said. “The scope o this

show is amazing. We’ll have between (50,000) and 75,000

people show up.”

The 500-lot fea market and train are a huge draw or

guests, Luper said. He said guests will see how arming

has changed throughout the years.“People will see a tractor and oten ask ‘what is that’

because it doesn’t look like the tractors o today,” Luper

said.

For more than 40 years the show has eatured new

attractions or the amily to enjoy. Last year the show

eatured a new amily attraction, the static display o th

Spirit o Traverse City miniature train. The display wa

brought rom Traverse City.

Luper said event organizers have something big

planned this year, although he said it’s too soon to revea

details.

“We pride ourselves on being a amily-un event,” Lu-

per said. “It’s a lot to see or a little bit o money.”The event costs $10 per day or $25 or a our-day pass o

adults. Children ages 15 and younger are ree i accomp

It’s time to put the remote control down and slide o

that comortable couch.

Yes, you too can be a road-racer a lot easier than you

think.

No, you don’t have to go out and run a marathon (26.2miles) or even a 10k (6.2) miles to get into shape. As they

say, round is a shape.

A simple training regimen can build you toward a 5k

(3.1 miles) in a matter o about two months and your body

will thank you or it as you get older.

Runner and Cadillac High School assistant cross coun-

try coach Laurie Decker said there are a lot o benefts to

running.

“There’s the health and ftness aspect and not just or

your ftness but or your mind,” she said. “Running gets

you creative and thinking out o the box.

“There’s meeting dierent people while you are run-

ning and running in dierent places plus the sel-conf-

dence and sel-esteem you get rom having accomplished

something.”

Beore you turn the TV back on and open that bag o

potato chips, it really is easy to get going.

“Start out slowly. When I frst started, I was maybe able

to run a little bit and then walk,” Decker said. “Then

gradually, you increase the running parts. Slowly, youincrease your mileage.

“You can’t just jump into training and think you can do

it in a couple o weeks. I would say or a 5k, you should

train around nine weeks to get ready.”

Decker recommends establishing a base amount o

running and then working your way up, gradually add-

ing speed and endurance to the mix. Sometime in there

throw in a long training run o maybe fve to seven mile

which will build your stamina.

“Once you get a base, it will come ast and then you ca

start tweaking things like speed,” she said. “Runningwith a partner helps, too, because you can encourage

each other.”

While building up to running distance races, it’s also

important to listen to your body, Decker said, and give it

some rest. Each time you get back to running, you can d

a little more because your body has a base to start rom.

There are plenty o races around the area this summe

to try out your newound hobby, whether it be a 5k, 10k,

triathlon or even longer races.

and pancake breakast.

“There is always something or everyone to do,”

From Friday until Monday the estival brings a

Everyone rom local northern Michigan celebri-

ties to international talent have made a visit to

Manton to experience the spring celebration.

“One year we even had Miss Canada come to visitthe estival,” Don Larson, a resident o Manton,

said.

One o his avorite memories o the estival, Lar-

son said, was when the town received a visit rom

ormer Major League Baseball players Charlie Max-

well and Ray Hubert in the 1970s.

The parade will eature a perormance rom the

Mesick Bulldog Marching Band as well as local

Shriners rom Manton and Battle Creek driving by

to wave at spectators.

“I’ve been in charge o the parade or about 56

years and every year it gets a little bigger,” Larson

said. “We’ve been ortunate to have people enjoy theestival with us every year.”

He said the nearly century-long celebration has

become a tradition or Manton residents.

“The harvest estival is like a homecoming or the

community,” Larson said.

CADILLAC — Once school starts ater Labor Day, the

once busy calendar o events starts to slow down in north-

ern Michigan.

While there are events like Lake

City’s Festival o the Pines, CadillacArea Visitors Bureau Executive Direc-

tor Joy VanDrie said there was def-

nitely room or more events. Enter the

Fall Fever Festival.

VanDrie said the estival started

fve years ago as a celebration o the

completion o the frst phase o the

Mitchell Street project through down-

town Cadillac. Since then it has been

a way to celebrate everything all has

to oer.

While things like a classic car show,

bounce houses and a petting zoo all were part o the estivi-

ties last year, there also was ood and crat vendors in the

city park during the day. There also was a parade.

VanDrie said many o those events will be returning to

this year’s event, which is slated or Sept. 28. One o the

more popular events is the Crat Beer Festival.

VanDrie said work started in early April to get the brew

ers lined up or the annual autumnal

event. She also said the hope is to

bring some new twists to the popularevent.

“We are hoping this year to bring

more inormation about the brewers

so we can have more brewers on site,

she said. “We are looking into how to

bring in the Grand Traverse Distiller

and Uncle Don’s Apple Pies as well.

We did get some requests or wine las

year so we are looking at bringing in

least one winery.”

As or the amily events scheduled

throughout the day, VanDrie said the

parade will kick o the estival at 9 a.m. and other events

such as the car show, kids activities and vendors will con

tinue throughout the day.

It can be summed up with four simple words that say a

lot.

Food, family, fun, and free.

The fourth annual Hersey Harvest Food Drive Festival

returns again this summer, and continues to grow and

thrive on the simple premise that one “can” make a dif-

ference — and make fun family memories at the same

time.

The brainchild of Hersey native Robin Marvel, who as

a child utilized the local food pantries during lean times,

the Hersey Harvest Festival offers a day of free fall funfor anyone who will bring along a donation for re-stock-

ing the local food pantries.

One “Can” Make A Difference.

“Living in Osceola County, we are part of a fantastic

community and I am encouraged to use our small town

appeal and amazing communities to bring people togeth-

er,” said Marvel of the festival, which seems to multiply

in size, attendees and donations each year.

Last year, the festival brought out over $1,500 worth of

food item donations for the pantry, helping to feed aroun

150 needy families, and this year’s event, packed with fa

refreshments games, prizes and more, is sure to draw

more to the fall fun.

This year’s event will be held Saturday, Sept. 28 from 1

a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mosaic Park in Hersey.

In addition to the scenic setting, this year’s plans in-

clude a hay treasure dig, bounce house, a craft table, anfall food favorites like cider, doughnuts and fresh milk t

keep the energy up for the fun.

To participate in the fun, just bring along your non-

perishable food items and enjoy the fall day.

For more information, visit the festival Facebook pag

at www.facebook.com/harvestfooddrivefestival.

MCBAIN — This Labor Day, Missaukee County will

once again play host to a decades-old spectacle of people, cowboys, live music and livestock.

The spectacle is part of an annual tradition that origi-

nated more than 80 years ago in 1927 — the year Bill and

Bonnie Hughston purchased 450 acres of property for the

purpose of developing the land into a grazing area for

their cattle.Nowadays, the Hughston Cow Camp Rodeo routinely

draws thousands and is a mainstay stopping ground for

the International Professional Rodeo Association, whic

hosts professional rodeo shows on the property all Labo

Day weekend.

The gates to the Hughston property will be open Thur

day, August 29, at 8 a.m. for those wishing to set up their

campsites. Activities start on Friday and will last until

Sunday.

Coordinator Kari Hughston said all events from previ

ous years will be making a return for this year’s event.

She added they have been discussing some ideas on new

activities, although they are tentative at this point.

Hughston said a full schedule of events will be posted

along with price details for camping and admission, at a

future date.

To get to Hughston’s property, head to the blinking lig

in McBain, then follow the signs north until you reach

the camp.

Anyone with questions can call 825-2424.
