star wars: the empire strikes back

I watched Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back on DVD last Saturday. It’s a science fiction movie and it takes place a long time ago in a far-away galaxy. I enjoyed the movie because I liked the story and it had lots of action. 1It was never boring! The special effects were excellent, especially the scenes in space. 2They looked very realistic. I really liked the music. 3It was very exciting.

The actors were also very good in The Empire Strikes Back. My favorite actor was Anthony Daniels. He played a robot called C-3PO and he was very funny. Darth Vader was the scariest character. You never saw

his face! The best part of the movie was the final battle. 4It was amazing! I thought the ending was interesting, but I don’t want to tell you what happened! Kathy, Cambridge, UK

4 TRY IT OUT Work in pairs. Think of an important person from your country. What changes did they make?

1 Gandhi is one of the most famous people from 2 . He was born on October 2, 1869. He was the 3 of the Indian Nationalist Movement, which wanted independence for India. He believed in 4 and human rights. We call him the father of modern India.

Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in the US in 1929. When he was 26, he started work as a minister in a church in Alabama.

At that time, there was a law that black people couldn’t share the same public spaces as white people. Buses had separate seats for black and white people. Black people walked past the white people to the special area at the back of the bus. If a white person got on the bus and there were no seats, then a black person gave him his seat. King was angry about this. He asked every black person in Alabama to stop using the buses. The bus company was surprised and it lost a lot of money. Finally, it agreed that all passengers could sit anywhere.

a dreamBut black people still couldn’t go into the same restaurants, schools and public buildings as white people. So King continued the protest. In August 1963, 200,000 black people marched with King through the capital city, Washington DC. At the end, King gave his famous “I have a dream” speech. The audience was thrilled, and so was the world.

The following year, the US government changed the law and gave black people many civil rights. King won the Nobel Peace Prize.
