1. Introduction

Presently, the common way of construction of large rectangular pipeline

generally involve the following options:

1.1.1.1. Open cut excavation and construction

2.2.2.2. construction using box culvert jacking method –manual

3.3.3.3. construction using box culvert machine jacking method- using

rectangular shield machine

4.4.4.4. Pipe roof construction and pipe jacking construction.

Of these four methods, options 1 (open cut excavation) and 3 (using

rectangular shield shield machines) can be used to construct longer

distances. The former ,option 1 requires situation where interruption of traffic

and services are allowed and are generally only suitable

for construction in the outskirts of cities and not under railway lines etc.;

Option 2 ( Manual box jacking) has been widely used especially in India

and in SE Asia for constructing underpass across railways lines and

roads .Even in USA ( Boston) large boxes have been successfully jacked in

that manner , where soil and other conditions make it suitable due to ability

and acceptance of reasonable controllable l settlement .

option 3 (rectangular shield machine ) enabler construction of large boxes

safer and economical .The machines have been evolved through

various applications and China’s Yangzhou Guangxin (GX Tunnel) ihave

developed machines that are huge success in a number of prestigious

projects .

Option 4 (Pipe roof construction ) generally are suitable for length up to

150 m due to its limitation of jacking a series of steel pipe of small

diameter( 700 -800 mm OD in common) forming a roof , and excavate the

soil bounded by the pipe roof and build the final structure of

underpass or subway using steel portal frames and concreting the sections

thus supported .

Compared with pipe roof method, the time taken for constructing similar

large boxed are much shorter if box culvert jacking machine is used and

the saving in cost due to less temporary material( steel pipes used, as

the culvert cast are jacked directly , section by section in the option 3. and pipe

jacking construction for not more than 150m a shorter

distance, rectangular pipeline construction

In China, research and application of the rectangular box jacking have gained

grounds since the early 1990s.

The first major rectangular pipe jacking construction was done in April 1999.

When The Shanghai Institute of tunnel construction technology developed a

3.8 m × 3.8 m rectangular box jacking machine for box construction.

The Construction of Shanghai Metro Line 2 Lujiazui Station on the 5th

entrance used earth pressure balance pipe jacking machine, and completed in

two months the two tunnels. These works were achieved with good quality,

and safety, with the normal use and road traffic during the construction of

underground pipelines.

Other examples will be illustrated and the following table indicate the

rectangular pipe jacking machine engineering performance in China :

3-Box jacking in China- some examples

In April 7, 2009, another record was broken with the largest domestic

The Road and along the tunnel during construction through the Zu including

two 220KV power cable, Φ1000mm rainwater pipes, Φ500mm other series of

important pipelines, and the engineering challenge for this project was

tremendous . For this a special Rectangular pipe jacking project

department was established to develop a detailed construction program,

and to ensure the adoption of many detail and contingency plans to handle

project risks .The top command are specialist leading senior engineers in the

field and with meticulous contract and technical management, the

rectangular tunnel was successfully completed by run through May 1,2009 ,

in less than 1 month since starting .

Hospital, the rectangular shield machine made by Yangzhou GuangXin

smoothly executed the 78.8 m long, 3.3 m high x 5.0 m wide box through the

connecting hospital (Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan) .The completion of

the underground passage further improve the process of hospital care in the

future.

"open-top excavation method for this project ,near the Pearl River was

considered too risky due the heavy trafficked road and the nature of the

sandy layers. This Subway , measuring 64.5 m long, on the 6th line East Lake

Station on the 2nd entrance involve the investment of over 1000 million

RMB( USD 170 Million) – a total of 4 rows of 6.4 x 4 m , separated by 1 m in

betwwen. The cover is only 4 m maximum

The project team reported not encountering much difficulties in the

project execution, and with most of the problems similar to other

circular shield machine- the control of the front of the cutter rotating and

the sped of soil excavation .

The Guicheng Underground Commercial Street located in Nanhai Avenue

South, with the complexity of the location (at the lower part of the planned

subway lines and close proximity of the upper large drainage boxes,

cross-section 4.2m x 2.5m.) with the conditions imposed by the municipality

that the traffic cannot be interrupted, the proposed pipe jacking construction

was done using rectangular shield from GX Tunnel.

The jacking strata are mainly sandy, any manual or open excavation will cause

gushing sand, resulting in excessive deformation .The cover is only 5.5 m, with

the electrical crossings at the depth of 2.2 to 3.1 m, and only 6.5m adjacent to

an existing tunnel With the various boundary underground conditions, busy

street the proposed construction of the pipe jacking method using the parallel

arrangement of the four sections. The details are summarized below:

i. . depth or cover 5.5m,

ii. Cross section of box : 6.9m × 4.9m rectangular, wall thickness of 0.45m,

iii. Each box section length 2m, with tongue and groove joints.

iv. Between sections –spacing of 0.5m.a domestic 1st

v. Each of the top section with prestressing strand segment bolted together

to enhance the overall stiffness.

vi. The shield machine is made into 2 halves- the top and down .The

two halves were assembled and the box sections jacked one row

after another .
