MontageDescription:A motivation montage made by blending three images and use of typography.

Date:May 31, 2014

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn to blend images together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills with multiple elements.

Process:I first decided on a color scheme and thought of using the texture of fire. After I thought and sketched some designs, I found a picture of a lion with its mouth open to the side. In Photoshop I placed the flame picture as a background. For the lion picture, I first used levels and vibrance to make the color of the lion stand out more. I then placed the image of the lion on top of the flames and put the linear light layer to blind the lion into the flames. I really liked the effect this layer had on the lions face. I noticed that the bright flame canceled out the lions fangs, so I used the clone stamp tool to make the black area in the flames to set on the fangs of the lions mouth to bring out the fang more. I then continued to mask the lion to blend into the flames.

Next I added in the picture of the girls profile. I lined up the noses of both the girl and the lion. For the girl, I put the linear light layer so she could be blended in as well. I decided to use a delicate font type to show that fears don’t always have to be faced with boldness. Sometimes you can face fear with delicacy. I liked the white color for the words to contrast the black background.

BROCHUREDescription:Create three different logos for the same company.

Date:July 12, 2014

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure.

Process:In Adobe InDesign, I created the gateway fold for my brochure. I placed guildline and layers to know where to fold once the design was printed. I also placed guidelines to know where the inside of the text would be placed so I wouldn’t fold on top of the text.

I used a photo and placed it as my background for the front and backside of my brochure. I liked the color red and I felt like it went well with my topic of dating advice. I also wanted to add the white bar on top to make the title easier to read. I really liked the idea of the girl and boy outline holding hands with the heart in the middle.

For the images, I used the text wrapping tool to have the text go around the girl laughing. In Photoshop I was able to use the masking layer and take away the background of the original photo. I was also able to have the text go around the boxed pictures as well.

For my logo, I was able to go into Adobe Illustrator and use the pen tool to create the heart logo for Love Connections. I was able to then place this design in InDesign and place it in my brochure on the right side on the inside.

Business cardsDescription:Matching letterhead and business card using a design that is personally created.

Date:June 14, 2014

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.

Process:I created the logo mainly using the pen tool in Adobe InDesign. I used the pen tool to create the image of the scorpion by using simple shapes, mainly rectangles. After I created the scorpion, I was able to add texture to it and gradient to it to make it stand out more against the black background for the business card. From there I added the business information at the bottom of the design to create white space.

For the back side of the business card I switch the color and texture. I really liked the result of having the scorpion cut off in plain black against the textured gradient. Overall I feel the business card turned out well.

LETTERHEADDescription:Matching letterhead and business card using a design that is personally created.

Date:June 14, 2014

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.

Process:For the stationary, I brought over the back side of the business card and created balance by adding the business information at the bottom of the page. I like the way the water mark looks and how the scorpion has a little texture to it. It is light enough that writing can still be seen if you print over the scorpion design.

EVENT ADDescription:A full-bleed color event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Date:May 17, 2014

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:Microsoft Word

Objectives:Find, scan and import a high-quality image.Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process:I scanned the muffin image, then used Word image to delete almost all of the background. I then used repetition of the circle image with different variety of shades of pink. Throughout the design, I used odd numbers of circles. I chose a font that was contrasting in weight. It was nice to learn that Microsoft Word could do so many different things to design an ad if needed.

LOGOSDescription:Create three different logos for the same company.

Date:June 8, 2014

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience.

Process:I enjoyed learning more about the Adobe program Illustrator. For the first design, I mainly used typography, but I love the simplicity of the red button. The red button gives just enough color pop in the overall design. For my second and third designs, I mainly used the ellipse tool and created a lot of circles to give the image of shading and different depth in the design. I was also able to create typography that was easily manipulated with the pen tool. I learned a lot of cool tricks in this program through class as well.

WEB PAGEDescription:A web page designed and created to present a personal logo.

Date:June 28, 2014

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:TextWrangler and Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content.Identify hex colors for web design.

Process:I created this web page using only TextWrangler. I had never seen or written any HTML/CSS. It was interesting to see how you could make a web page by only using a simple text editor. I thought it was really cool to use the http://www.W3.org HTML validator. It was useful to have something check to see if I had any problems with my code.

I attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML. I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my web page. I found these colors by opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool. I also changed my fonts to Times New Roman and Verdana. I declared some backup fonts just in case the viewer’s browser didn’t have these fonts. I also used padding around the logo and text so that they would not be too close to the edge of the web page. This was one of the most challenging parts of working with CSS.

PHOTODESIGNDescription:Learned to use Photoshop to create and design an image with information on it. Also learned to incorporate color into a layout with an original photo.

Date:July 18, 2014

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn basic photography skills.Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.

Process:I first placed the photo in Adobe Photoshop. I was then able to place the picture where I wanted and started to place colored blocks around the photo. I used the Brush tool to blend the background into the tan box to make the grass stand out more. I like how the grass in the background blended in with the tan block.

I was then able to place the colors I used into blocks of color and make the words clean and crisp. I like the red text on the tan with the saying I chose to place on the overall design.

FLIERDescription:Black & White promotional flier promoting a graduate leadership conference.

Date:May 10, 2014

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process:I started out by making sketches of layout ideas. I then used my sketches to help guide me in my final layout in Adobe InDesign. I mainly used different sizes of black rectangles and implemented contrast with the use of white squares. I incorporated contrast with the colors black and white. The title stands out because of the bigger font and white lettering against the black background. I used the rule of odds by using three squares and repetition by using the same square pattern throughout the layout to help the flow of the design. I left my body copy smaller and created white space at the bottom of the layout to create breathing space. The image, content, and logo were given for this flier.
