TOPBuilding brands, creating value An interplay of political, social and economic factors is creating waves of uncertainty in the global economy, as well as in our domestic ones. Brexit in Europe, the upcoming US presidential elections as well as our own elections in Hong Kong, increasing acts of terrorism throughout the world are all rocking the boat, even as we grapple with issues of weakening economic growth and volatile currencies. Amid all of this, technology continues to change the playing field in many industries and while innovation presents new opportunities, it is also introducing disruptive forces, like the sharing economy.

This environment is nothing short of challenging for businesses. At Jebsen, having journeyed with China for over 120 years, we understand the importance of balancing organisational agility with stability—ensuring that our culture of innovation is backed by a strong, streamlined operational core and an empowered, high-performing workforce. Combined with our expertise in many niche industry sectors, we have the capabilities and willingness to create business breakthroughs for our brand partners. Our partnership with Dyson is an excellent example. In 2008, we introduced the British technology brand to Hong Kong. We were confident that Dyson could be a success in Mainland China as well and entered the market in 2012. After establishing the brand in premium department stores, we, together with the brand, created Dyson concept stores earlier this year to deliver the full brand experience in a unique setting. As a next step, we are working with the brand to penetrate the beauty electronics appliance sector in both markets. We use this expertise for our own brands as well. With 25 years of market leadership behind it, Jebsen Fine Wines has launched its own brand, Jebsen Wine Estates. This portfolio of our own wines from around the world appeals to the growing population of wine aficionados in Greater China. Similarly, Jebsen Industrial, our longest-standing business, is also advancing into new areas. Transforming itself from an equipment supplier to a value creator, it has established the JCineCast brand to develop cross-brand solutions for professional and prosumer filmmakers. This is part of its strategic push towards greater customer-centricity, which has also prompted the business unit to focus on Green, Clean and Well-being/Health solutions—solutions that address current and emerging customer concerns around sustainability, safety, efficiency, productivity and return on investment. As a Group, we are also leveraging the online space to do more, and go farther. Jebsen

Maintaining its lead Jebsen Motors’ continued investment in facilities and service excellence has made it one of the largest and top Porsche dealer groups in the region.

“We are not ready to rest. Despite winning the top award, we will continue to enhance the customer experience at our centres, striving to make our centres the best place for our customers to buy a new or used Porsche cars and to service their cars. We are aiming for ‘customers for life’ and the precondition is to offer the best service to our customers,” said Mr Eberlein.

In a milestone moment for Jebsen Motors, its Porsche Centre Beijing Goldenport has won the prestigious 2015 Dealer of the Year award at the Porsche China Dealer Conference held on 25 May 2016. Its Porsche Centre Guangzhou came in second while Porsche Centre Shenzhen Futian/Longgang finished in ninth place, securing three spots for Jebsen Motors in Porsche’s top ten list out of 67 participating Porsche Centres in Greater China.

The awards are just the latest addition to a slew of recent achievements by the thriving business unit. Despite a softening of the automobile market in Mainland China last year, Jebsen Motors accomplished an impressive 11% increase in Porsche car deliveries, setting a new record of 9,317 units. Riding this momentum, it enjoyed a strong start in 2016, breaking all its previous monthly records to deliver 1,224 cars in January.

Sharing his delight over the Dealer of the Year award, Mr Joachim Eberlein, Managing Director, Jebsen Motors said: “I truly appreciate Porsche China’s recognition of our efforts. As a trusted long-term partner of Porsche, this result demonstrates the success of our strategic investments in our facilities and our employees, as well as our commitment to the brand through our ongoing strive for excellence.”

Unlike many of its competitors, Jebsen Motors only represents Porsche. This strategy allows the business unit to channel all its time, effort and resources to strengthening Porsche’s market presence in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.

Infrastructure excellence Jebsen Motors’ commitment to Porsche is clear. In the past year alone, all Porsche Centres operated by Jebsen Motors have shown infrastructure improvements. It also opened new service centres in Hong Kong and Hangzhou and expanded Porsche Centre Hangzhou Westlake’s showroom into one of the largest in Asia.

Perhaps most notable, however, was the November 2015 opening of Porsche Centre Shenzhen Longgang—the largest Porsche Centre in Southern China. The 4S centre sits on a plot of land equivalent to the size of three soccer fields and has a showroom that can accommodate as many as 22 cars. The mammoth project was headed by Ms Lilliana Choi, Jebsen’s General Manager of Corporate Development.

“Our first challenge in establishing any new Porsche 4S centre is identifying a suitable plot of land. The site has to be located within an area designated by Porsche China and be able to accommodate Porsche’s preset blueprint with its particular shapes, heights and layouts. This is especially difficult in the first tier cities where Jebsen’s Porsche Centres are located,” she said. Once the site has been secured, Jebsen’s Corporate Development team pulls together project managers, quantity surveyors, a local design institute, supervisors and qualified contractors to begin work.

“In the construction stage, apart from managing the typical time, quality, cost and safety issues, there are particular challenges that come with building a new Porsche 4S centre. We must ensure that we adhere strictly to the standards and design criteria set out to ensure brand consistency, so as to pass three levels of quality checks by Porsche China,” shared Ms Choi. “In addition, we were working on a very tight schedule for Porsche Centre Shenzhen Longgang. It could not have been possible without the full commitment of everyone involved!”

The service factor Today, the fully operational Porsche Centre Shenzhen Longgang is the responsibility of General Manager Mr Victor Zhang, who also oversees Porsche Centre Shenzhen Futian.

“In terms of infrastructure, Porsche Centre Shenzhen Longgang is the biggest in Southern China but I hope that it will become known nationwide for its outstanding customer service. I believe that a highly professional team is the key to making the most of our physical facilities,” he said. “In Shenzhen, where Jebsen Motors has been active for eight years, we have nurtured dozens of Porsche Certified Technicians at the Gold, Silver and Bronze levels and a high proportion of our sales consultants have also been certified by Porsche globally. This gives us a strong foundation to succeed.”

Over the years, Jebsen Motors has proven its strength in providing premiere and exclusive experiences to Chinese customers through continuous investment in state-of-the-art technology and customised services, as well as continuous improvements in work processes and qualifications of work staff.

With its dual commitment to enhancing its physical network and talent resources, Jebsen Motors is confident of overcoming market changes and standing its ground as a benchmark of professionalism and profitability in Greater China’s automotive industry.

Project Morning Star, a sight-saving community initiative by Jebsen Group and international non-profit organisation Orbis, has come to the fifth year in 2016 with sustainable results. “Project Morning Star” has achieved a total of RMB 5,152,305 in donations at the end of 2015, which has been allocated to various ORBIS sight saving projects in the provinces of Gansu, Heilongjiang, Guangdong, Yunnan, and Laoning as well as the renovation for the 3rd generation ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital.

Most recently, from May 22-26, 10 Jebsen volunteers visited Liaoning Province for the ninth Project Morning Star field trip. They were joined by Dr Stephen Brodovsky, a 20-year ophthalmology veteran from Canada. Dr Brodovsky’s help was enlisted to conduct high quality hands-on training for local eye doctors and ophthalmology residents, who have highly limited access to health resources and systematic training. In addition to training doctors, Project Morning Star also ensured that local nurses and administrators were equipped with relevant skills.

This mirrors one of Project Morning Star’s major focuses —to support the National Prevention of Blindness Training Centre at He Eye Hospital, which is by far the single largest project designed to train and educate medical workers. Through this project, Orbis helps to create scalable, sustainable models of hands-on training for county hospital medical teams and for ophthalmology residents at both Huludao He Eye Hospital and Shenyang He Eye Hospital training centres in Liaoning Province.

In motorsports, having good drivers is insufficient. We also need good engineers, service teams, logistics and more. In the same way, a hospital needs to have well trained doctors, nurses and administrative personnel—and that is what Project Morning Star is trying to achieve.”

“I think 10 years from now, the leadership and people management agenda will be drastically different from today. The HR function must evolve to become an employer brand specialist, a data analyst and an employee experience expert,” said Ms Bianca Wong, Jebsen Group Human Resources & Corporate Communications Director.

“At Group-level, our business is getting more diverse while our talent needs are becoming more specialised. This presents unique challenges to our recruitment and retention strategy,” she added.

Under Ms Wong’s leadership, the Group HR team is advancing in many fields. It has developed a Group Employer Value Proposition, “Success breeds Success”, and is actively showcasing this through employee success stories on its career website (careers.jebsen.com) and via its social media presence. Through these initiatives, the Group also hopes to attract candidates who possess not only technical skills and knowledge, but who also share its drive for excellence. A personalised recruitment experience also helps to engage candidates and identify the best match for the role.

“While we recognise that every position requires unique skillsets and competencies, in general, we look for candidates who demonstrate a willingness to learn, a diligent attitude towards their work and good communication skills,” said Ms Wong. “We are also launching a series of initiatives, including career pathing, learning and development and internal movement opportunities, to help our employees grow within the Group.”

Beyond this, Ms Wong also believes that HR needs to be more adaptive to technology.

“In my opinion, data analytics is quite an untapped area for us at the moment, due to both the lack of skills and data readiness. But it has huge potential. The insights that we could gain from data analytics have the ability to not only impact and improve HR functions such as recruitment, training and compensation structure, but also aid business decisions by management,” she said.

“At Jebsen, because we have a geographically dispersed workforce, advanced technology could also be invaluable in helping us better manage performance, source feedback and provide innovative training solutions.” At the moment, Ms Wong revealed that the Group HR is spearheading a revamp of Jebsen’s intranet portal, Morus, to deliver a more intuitive and mobile-optimised experience to its people. The new Morus will also include enhanced features and functions to drive more knowledge sharing and greater people engagement. Internally, a new HR Management System is also in the works to support more efficient employee data management and HR operations.

The future of talent management Ms Bianca Wong, Jebsen Group Human Resources & Corporate Communications Director, shares her thoughts on talent and technology.

For Jebsen Group to remain in step with the rapidly changing business world and talent market, it has to constantly look ahead, especially in the area of human resources (HR) management.

Mr Ady Lai of Porsche Centre Macau and Mr Jerry Wang of Porsche Centre Shanghai Minhang have both achieved a remarkable record of delivering 1,000 Porsche cars each during their tenure with Jebsen Motors.

It is a double celebration for Mr Lai, who marks his 10th anniversary with Porsche Centre Macau this year. From selling six cars a month when he first joined, Mr Lai’s motto of always being confident, patient and responsible helped him create a personal record of 188 cars sold in 2014 and 2015. This year, the sales veteran hit his 1,000th-car milestone.

Celebrating excellence Mr Ady Lai and Mr Jerry Wang, Sales Representative, Jebsen Motors achieve a sales record of 1,000 Porsche cars.

Two bright stars have emerged from Jebsen Motors’ high performing sales force!

Success Breeds Success

Ms Eva Liu’s journey with Jebsen Group began in September 2013 as a Training Coordinator in Shenzhen. Her interest in human resources motivated her to apply for an internal transfer to her current role in October 2014. As Human Resources Assistant, Ms Liu continued to take ownership of her career; and in June 2015, she initiated a Learning and Development (L&D) Discussion with her supervisor. “The Group’s L&D Plan allows my supervisor and I to work together in identifying my learning and development needs. The process also allows me to receive coaching from my supervisor and helps me prepare myself for greater responsibilities,” she said. “The plan has guided my development over the past year, during which I have mastered telephone interview techniques. This helps me identify suitable candidates more quickly and accurately, contributing to a more efficient recruitment process. I have also been more active in staff activities to build closer relationships with my colleagues because understanding their perspective is useful in my daily work too.”

“In the coming year, I plan to gain more face-to-face interview experience and deepen my understanding about the labour law as well as our compensation and benefits strategy. With this knowledge, I will be able to better appreciate each role I need to recruit for to become a more professional recruiter.”

Ms Eva Liu’s journey with Jebsen Group began in September 2013.

Ady Lai and Jerry Wang, two Jebsen Motors top sales representative achieved a new milestone in their careers.

“This is a major milestone but it is also just a number. I have told myself not to indulge too much in past achievements. Sales is like a marathon – we have to keep moving forward,” he shared.

While both Mr Lai and Mr Wang remain humble, their achievements have not gone unnoticed. Mr Helmuth Hennig, Group Managing Director, penned commendation letters for them while Mr Joachim Eberlein, Managing Director of Jebsen Motors, decided to make their dreams come true. He invited Mr Lai to France to watch the 24 Hours of Le Mans race and gave Mr Wang a trip to London to catch his favourite Arsenal FC in action!

Mr Michael Goldmann joined Jebsen & Jessen Hamburg on May 2, 1987. Almost 29 years later, on April 29, 2016, he bade a fond farewell to his colleagues and began a new chapter of his life as a retiree. While it was difficult to say goodbye to him, especially for the 70 employees in the Hamburg Chemical division who have worked closely with him over the years, Jebsen & Jessen Hamburg came together to give him a warm send-off.

While Mr Goldmann’s tenure with the sister group officially ended on December 31, 2015, he graciously extended his time with the company as a consultant to ensure a smooth and seamless leadership transition. His successor, Mr Fritz Graf von der Schulenburg, and Mr Wolfhart Putzier, honoured his dedication during the company’s annual Christmas party in December.
