Trust me when I say it can be a very magical weekend if you let it. One way to add to the “Magic” is to come perform on our Open Mic (Day) Stage right on the Trade Show Floor. Dave Russell from Antique Digital Pianos will be back with us this year with a kick a** stage, and sound! We have a full size piano, electronic drums, guitars, cajons, bongos, guitars, whatever you need to play, we have it! No amps needed! It is “supposed” to be Acoustic.. Sometimes we get a little loud, but we do try to keep it at a decent level so everyone can still social-

Rachel Rocks, at the Pennsylvania Musician Magazine Booth, to sign up. It is open to everyone who is a registered attendee of the conference. Don’t think I’m gonna go play there at 2:30

everyone gets to play 2 songs, I announce the next person on the list, if they are there they play, if not I go on to the next person. It’s that easy. It is open from 11-5 Friday and Saturday. Last year we had over 50 acts perform on our Open Mic stage, we squeeze as many in as we possibly can! We hope you stop by and say Hi. I hear we are going to have some other yummy goodies we will be handing out too from our booth, so make sure you stop by! Every year it’s like a big family reunion, I honestly can not wait!!!! Make sure and check out the full venue listing in this issue and plan your nights out for the 20th MMC! Thank you to John Harris Millennium Music Conference,

out of your MMC experience, feel free to throw me an e-mail at [email protected]. Well that’s all for this month. I must prepare myself for the MMC Re-Cap Journal next month! Please get out there and support some form of local music somewhere! It is all around you and it truly is soothing for the soul! If you see me “Out & About” please stop me and say Hi! I love meeting new people and seeing old friends too! Don’t forget to check out our Facebook page for all of the Hot Shots at facebook.com/PAMusicianMagazine and our website, www.pamusician.net See you Out & About!!!

Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers! 2016 started great with The Give Take at Harrisburg’s Abbey Bar Hot Jam Factory, Observe the 93rd, & El Flyin’. The Give Take are the most exciting and impressive new talent on the Harrisburg music scene. The band is close to releasing their second record and have

‘Cold December.’ The Give Take Su-san Ouchis on keyboards. Paul Sorrels, Glen Charron, Ian Gordon and Shea Saman complete the band’s line up. Jersey based Night Birds visited American Bar and Grill in Lancaster on January 2nd. A great night of punk rock which included: Deletions, Shitty Friends and killer band Brom Bones! I was shocked to realize I’ve never heard of Brom Bones from Lancaster. With a few brief times of hia-tus, Brom Bones have always seem to return and their career spans across four decades. Frontman Jason Berlet was fantastic and wailed, while the entire band delivered solid melodic punk. Brom Bones will play ABAG again on March 12 with the highly anticipated return of The Lebowskis. Last month also included a trip south to the Fillmore in Silver Spring, MD for Wild Child: Dave

Brock’s Doors Experience. The Los Angeles based act has over 20 solid years of world tour experi-ence and are considered the most realistic tribute to The Doors. Wild Child tries to mirror the depth, energy and emotion of The Doors concerts as they were live back in the late 1960’s. The music is painstakingly reproduced and combined with the voice, look and essence of Jim Morrison live on stage. A must for fans of The Doors. NATIONAL NEWS: David Bowie, the legendary chameleon of rock ‘n’ roll, died January 10th of cancer. Bowie turned 69 two days earlier, the same day as he released a new album called “Black-

star”. Bowie, whose hits included “Fame,” ‘‘Heroes” and “Let’s Dance,” died “peacefully” and was surrounded by family. The singer had fought cancer for 18 months. Bowierecent years after reportedly suffering a heart attack in the 2000s. The singer, who was born David Jones in London, came of age in the glam rock era of the early 1970s. He had a striking androg-ynous look in his early days and was known for changing his appearance and sounds. Bowie was inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, but he didn’t attend the ceremony. Pearl Jam has a North American headline tour lined up for this Spring. Eddie Vedder & Co. marked their 25th year of performing live in October. Over the past two and a half decades the band has released 10 studio albums and put on hundreds of unique shows. Shows include: April 28th and 29th - Philadelphia, Wells Fargo Center Madison Square Garden Arena. One week before Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan reunite as Guns N’ Roses’ classic lineup at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in April, the band will play two nights in Las Vegas.

Guns N’ Roses perform at the new Las Vegas T-Mobile Arena April 8th-9th. “Inside sources” also claim the band will do a stadium tour this Summer. Slash and McKagan are rehearsing in Los Angeles with Frank Ferrer, who has drummed for the Rose-led GNR since 2006. Axl Rose has not been participating in the rehearsals, while band members refamiliarize themselves with the material. No word whether original members Steven Adler or Izzy Stradlin will participate. Glenn Frey, who co-founded The Eagles and with Don Henley became one of history’s most successful songwriting teams with such hits as “Hotel California” and “Life in the Fast Lane,” died on January 18th. Frey, who was 67, died of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia, the band said on its website. An “Eagles Greatest Hits” collection from the mid-1970s and “Hotel California” are among the best-selling albums in music history.

Ex-Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach says that he “would love the chance” to bury the 20-year hatchet with his former band-mates and reunite the group’s classic lineup. Bach said: “To be

honest, I have said some super shitty things to them and about

them. I would like to apologize for shooting my mouth off.” Skid Row guitarist Dave “Snake” Sabo spoke about reunit-ing with Bach: “Happiness, to me, in my spirit and my soul is

more important to me than having dollars in my wallet. No one

feels comfortable with the idea.” Bach explained: “It’s almost

20 years of getting over whatever the hell it is he’s mad about,

all still alive, that’s a miracle. It’s almost, like, if you have the

chance to do something that epic, and you don’t do it, it’s kind

Taylor Swift had the largest grossing world tour in 2015, that generated more than $250 million in primary ticket sales as she played to nearly 2.3 million fans. The total of $199.4 million she sold in North America now stands as the biggest tour to ever hit the continent as she crushed the previous record of $162 million set by The Rolling Stones in 2005. One Direction’s $210.2 mil-lion gross was second to Swift globally but with 2,364,390 tick-ets sold, no one played in front of more fans. AC/DC returned to touring minus Malcolm Young and did a massive $180 million in global ticket sales for the biggest tour in its history. Beyoncé is returning to the Super Bowl halftime show. The 34-year-old singer will perform at the February 7th show at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Last month, Cold-play announced they would perform at the halftime show. Be-yoncé and Coldplay recently collaborated on the band’s new album, “A Head Full of Dreams”. Beyoncé headlined the 2013 Super Bowl halftime show, where she was joined by her Destiny Child’s bandmates. Katy Perry, who performed at last year’s Super Bowl, had the most-watched halftime show in history with 118 million viewers. Natalie Cole, the Grammy-winning daughter of Nat “King” Cole” who carried on her late father’s musical legacy died at the age of 65. Natalie died due to compilations from ongoing health issues. Cole had battled drug problems and hepatitis that forced her to undergo a kidney transplant in May 2009. Cole’s greatest success came with her 1991 album, “Unforgettable ...

ZERODAY BREWING

COMPANY250 Reily St.

Harrisburg, PA 17102

SIM ROSS delivers a rich, rootsy blend of Heartland rock, Americana, punk, and country. He, who now calls Brooklyn, NY home, curses freely, plays rock clubs throughout town and up and down the East Coast. Infl uenced by such artists as Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle, Tom Petty, and Ja-son Isbell, “Ohio City Songs” is at once heartfelt and exuberant, a mix of introspec-tive ballads and hook-fi lled anthems. A self-taught musician who has been playing and writing music since age 16, attended Chicago’s Columbia College. His single “City of Dreamers” also selected as one of the Songs of the Year by the Music God’s and the Akademia’s blogs. On the 2014, 3 song ep “Broken Wings”, Sim and his band, The Redemption laid the groundwork for “Ohio City Songs” with its combination of gritty musical arrangements and often poignant lyrics. Sim Ross has performed throughout NYC at such notable venues as; The Pine Box Rock Shop, Bowery Electric, Spike Hill, and Putnam’s Pub Cookery in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and at numerous fesitvals throughout the U.S.

“Instrumentally, Tote’s EP balances her love for rocker chicks Stevie Nicks and Grace Potter with stand-and-sing divas Adele and Amy Winehouse.

More simply put: it’s big voice, old soul. The bridge of her single “Superman” shows major

pop-rock chops, and “Jane” breaks for a bounding saxophone solo.”

Lewton and Save the City. As usual I’m running late. I really wanted to do a nice interview with John Harris, Director of the Millennium Music Conference. Over the last 20 years I have watched him labor and work at pulling this conference off, year after year. There are always people griping and groaning but I tell you, “The Man” knows good music and he has always strived to give the Harrisburg area a treat for their ears by bringing us a plethora of talented musicians. Yes, there are a few that are just developing but the Music Confeerence is designed for those just starting out as well. Making connections and learning the “Music Business” is what the daytime conference is all about. Are you going to be “discovered” and become a big star and drive a big car, probably not. But you will learn and you will make con-nections that will last a life time in your musical career. I called Mr. Harris and asked him to put down some of his thoughts about the conference and the industry and general. Following is what he sent me, and it is very good. Thanks John!

It’s been 20 Years from humble beginnings in 1997 at the Best Western Conference Center & Courtyard Nightclub (old Villa Leo) off 83 South in New Cumberland to the Hilton Towers & Crown Plaza in downtown Harrisburg over to the Radisson Penn Harris in Camp Hill and this is our 3rd year at the Best Western Premier, Central Hotel & Conference Center and the showcase venues have changed more that the host hotel. From 90 acts in 11 venues in 1997 to almost 300 acts at 30 venues in 2016 with Gullifty’s Underground (or Zee’s Eatery in 1997) being the only venue in all 20 years. In 1997 mostly local bands participated and some are still around: Fuel, The Jellybricks, The Badlees, Hexbelt, Hybrid Ice, Martini Bros., Mike Banks, Dj Geoffro, Joey Welz, Allmighty Sena-tors, Case 150, Carbon Leaf and Fred Pellegrini.

In 1997 Bret Michaels & Charlie Sheen’s new entertain-Vikki Walls was As-

sociate Director and the Pennsylvania Musicians Magazine was a sponsor and partner. 105.7 was The Edge, 93.5 WTPA was The Rock Station and both were at Central Pennsylvania’s Rock Music Showcase and Symposium. In 1996 when we started up the event the idea was to provide a forum for original acts and artists to meet, network and learn about how to advance their careers and then showcase their original music at night. The event has not changed that goal.

in the mail with a showcase application, a press kit and a check for $20.00. We had hundreds in boxes by genre place in differ-ent rooms around the house. Now all submissions are electron-ic press kits and this year we had over 3,000 Free showcase submissions and we’re able to select over 200 acts from our ReverbNation and Sonicbids platforms. In 2016 we’re honored to have David Ivory as Keynote speaker. David has been coming to Harrisburg for years giving up his time to educate and share his experience with musicians. David is also credited with discovering and producing the GRAMMY-winning rock band Halestorm, who he met at Mil-lennium, and helped sign to Atlantic Records in late 2005. Past keynotes include Halestorm in 2013, Bill McGathy (Manager, 3 Doors Down, Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd), Jer-ry Harrison (Talking Heads, Garageband.com & Producer of Violent Femmes, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, No Doubt), Walter McDonough (Future Of Music Coalition), Pat DiNizio (The Smithereens), Brett Scallions (Fuel), (MTV), Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root), David Ellifson (Megadeth), Bruce Warren & Jim Mcguinn (WXPN) and Ken Carson who was PD at 105.7 The X and returns this year as Asheville Sound and Management. Think of an average of 60 speakers each year for 20 years and it’s almost 2,000 music industry professionals coming to Harrisburg, PA in the dead of winter to participate in the MMC. Some of the more famous acts that have participated over the years include: Godsmack, Halestorm, Fuel, Good Charlotte, Crobot, Ryan Bingham, Melody Gardot, Keaton Simons, Future Rock, Kingsfoil, Framing Hanley, Keaton Simons, Teddy Geiger, Big Elf, Charm City Devils and Sister Spar-row & The Dirtybirds. Imaging if you will an average of 250 acts a year for 20 years and it’s close to 5,000 acts and artists coming to Harrisburg in the dead of winter to the MMC. Looking back now it’s safe to say that almost the entire par-adigm of the music industry has changed over the last 20 years. The digital revolution has just about made the whole major record label business model a thing of the distant past. Radio is not as relevant either. While the MMC has been through snow and ice storms, recessions, showcase venue and host ho-tel changes the event as well as the industry evolves. There was a time when we thought MTV would ruin to touring industry but now MTV is irrelevant and the touring industry is stron-ger than ever. Once constant that has not altered is that acts and artists with the passion to make it in the music business

the growth of acts from the midstate like Poison, Live, Kix, Fuel, Halestorm and most recently Crobot; who met Lou Plaia from Reverbnation at Millennium while performing at a hastily moved Pabst Blue Ribbon stage when Gullifty’s dou-ble booked their Saturday with a private party. Lou liked what he heard and told his friends at TKO in NYC and ultimately led to a label signing and the current internationally touring act from central Pennsylvania receiving critical acclaim.

In 2003 I wrote “we come together as a com-munity..to validate our work and support the aspirations of emerging talent. We have designed a forum to facilitate net-working and the exchange of ideas and experiences that will serve to empower us all in the days to come”. It’s with gratitude that I thank all the Sponsors, Speakers, Mentors, Exhibitors, Media, Industry Professionals, Venues and staffs, Musicians and conference staffs and volunteers that have ever participate over the last 20 years. Our whole community needs to support the dreams and aspi-rations and objectives. MMC, and other similar events, should continue to foster an environment for emerging talent to suc-ceed. See you at #MMC20.

Late in 2012 and after a hiatus from playing live music, Tim Jesiolowski and Ed Piccolo decided to “end their silence” and

throw their hats into the rock-n-roll ring again. The desire was

bring the vision to light. With the addition of Trevor Schubert on vocals, Jeff Lawrence

three-part vocal harmonies, heavy guitar presence, bombastic

The band experienced a group epiphany in January 2015

rock and roll cover band and metamorphosed into a powerful

riff-driven original music-making machine. They took pieces

an unholy alliance, forming their own brand of monstrous rock

songs ready to be blasted through headphones at ear-melting

volumes. With limited time to actually get together to create

their originals, they had to get “original” themselves and come

up with creative ways to collaborate on songs. Tim has a touch

THE PROFESSORBy Jim Price

As we arrive in February, I am again looking forward to my

“working vacation” weekend that is the 20th Annual Millenni-

um Music Conference, happening February 19th thru the 21st

at the Best Western Premier – The Central Hotel and Confer-

ence Center in Harrisburg. Producer and Grammy-nominated

engineer David Ivory will be the keynote speaker at this year’s

conference, which also includes music industry panels and semi-

nars, mentoring sessions, the trade show with acoustic stage, and

showcase performances throughout the Harrisburg area from

nearly 300 different bands and artists from Pennsylvania, the

Northeast, and throughout the United States and world. I again

look forward to logging quality time with my PA Musician co-

horts, touching base with musical friends, networking and meet-

ing new faces, and discovering new talents and sounds. If you

are attending, say hello to me at the PA Musician booth area at

the trade show, and showcasing bands and artists are also invit-

ed to submit their recordings to my 105.9 Qwik-Rock “Home-

grown Rocker” radio program drop box – one recording will be

randomly drawn at the end of the Saturday’s business confer-

ence, and that group or artist will win a special guest interview

on the March 6th “Homegrown Rocker” program!

The transition from 2015 into 2016 was a smooth one, and

live music helped make that transition pleasant. Before taking a

break from stage action to begin the New Year, Half Tempted

rang in New Year 2016 at 30 Something. The reliable cast of

singer, guitarist and ringleader Ron Dalansky, guitarist/singer

Jim Mincin, bassist/singer Joe George and drummer Shawn

Gioiosa provided the appropriately sturdy classic rock mixture

of the stage quickly became busy with dancers and headbangers

as Half Tempted

-

toasts clanged at midnight, and 30 Something main man Clau-

dio, Carol and the staff presented a food buffet to welcome in

2016. Musical highlights before and after the change of year in-

cluded Ron’s and Jim’s dual guitar leads on Thin Lizzy’s “The Boys Are Back in Town,” and a rare lead singing display by Joe,

fronting the group on a version of Staind’s “It’s Been Awhile.”

As Half Tempted takes some time off, Shawn has taken over

atty, who stepped away at the end of the year.

was Pure Cane Sugar, -

urday show of the New Year at Zeno’s

arriving during their second set, I was quickly reminded of the

singing, instrumental and arranging brilliance that is this band!

They were in the midst of an innovative, funky read of The

Band’s “The Weight” as I arrived; the vocal harmonies sound-

ed great between singer/guitarist Kate Twoey and singer Na-

talie Race (the group’s third singer, Molly Countermine, was

absent this night). Meanwhile, Junior Tutwiler masterfully

executed clean solo work on his guitar, while drummer Daryl

Branford and bassist Bob Hart generated inventive rhythms.

Guest percussionist Dave Staab (the manager at Zeno’s) joined

Pure Cane Sugar during the nightcap set. The group continued

to mix original songs with creative spins on a variety of classics,

big highlights for me included Pure Cane Sugar’s creative read

“Zombie,” followed by the night-ending

“For What It’s Worth,” where

the group used a false ending to set up for the song’s roaring

homestretch. Pure Cane Sugar’s musical magic worked, draw-

ing more and more people to the front of the stage as their per-

formance continued. I am continually amazed every time I see

this band; if you haven’t seen Pure Cane Sugar yet, make a

resolution to experience them in this New Year; they are truly

something special!

sound informed by classic

blues rock, southern-fried rock

over the disc’s nine tracks. The Hawkeyes pull all stops, riding

most of the songs toward im-

passioned peaks before all is

said and done. Wiley’s voice

goes for broke as he belts out

honest words about life, work,

ambition and chasing dreams. The opening track “Miracle Man” sets the tone with its hard-driving rhythm and proud

proclamation of blue-collar roots and ethic. The southern-toned

“Ghost” is one of several numbers about the tough quest to

be a professional musician, while “Davenport” is a hard-

charging road song. The powerful “Hours & Miles” rides an

“One Plug in the Wall” recalls the fuzz distortion of classic

Neil Young & Crazy Horse while contemplating a rock’n’roll

pipedream that started in an electrical outlet. The Hawkeyes

describe rugged family living on the stern-edged “Junior,” and

the disc-closer “Had Enough” while lyrically running out of patience. The performances are

The Hawkeyes play for keeps, providing

ample punch and swagger. Produced by the group and Ken Rose, the CD sounds tough, edgy and consistent from start to

end, with all components of The Hawkeyes’ presentation giv-

en sharpness and bite in the mix. The Hawkeyes have truly

arrived with “One Plug in the Wall”,raw, no-nonsense, hard-punching rock. (The CD can be ob-

tained through the website www.hawkeyesband.com.)

STERLING KOCH – “ROCK SLIDE” (Full Force Mu-

sic) Sterling Koch continues his exploration of steel guitar

blues with a more rocking twist on his latest effort, “Rock Slide”. Inspired in part by the vinyl classic rock albums of his

youth, Koch designed “Rock Slide” much like a traditional

record album, with eight songs designated on “Sides” A and

B, and even a vinyl album design for the physical CD itself.

Within the album’s “grooves”

are seven original compo-

sitions and one remake;

showcasing Koch’s steel/

slide guitar virtuosity and

swagger, powered by the

steady and punchy rhythms

of drummer John Goba

and bassist Gene Babula.

Guest Jack Kulp’s harmon-

ica wail ushers in the disc’s

rousing opening track, the

Texas-styled boogie rocker “Shake ‘Em on Down.” Koch co-

wrote three of the songs with South Carolina-based songwrit-

er Freida Gantt; including the pulsating “Sugar,” featuring

backing vocalist Jennifer Dierwechter, “Good to Go” with its

Keith Richards-styled rhythm guitar tone and Stone-ish strut,

and the uptempo “Comin’ for Your Love.” Inspired by a dream,

the slow and moody “Leavin’ Me with the Blues” captures a

to feature guest keyboard player Bob Wagner. Koch applies

his signature slide guitar style to Steve Ray Vaughan’s clas-

sic and the album ends with a bar-themed playful

jam session called “Last Call.” This album grooves with the

-

cal terrain; Koch’s performances are steady and consistent;

own, and his vocals are sturdy and direct. Co-produced and

recorded by Koch and Bret Alexander, “Rock Slide” sounds

beefy and punchy, and the overall mix enables these songs to

rock and strut with authority. Like those classic rock albums

that helped inspire it, “Rock Slide” is a strong set from start to

end, as Sterling Kochguitar soundscape. (The CD can be obtained from CD Baby,

or through the website www.sterlingkoch.com.)

PA MUSICIAN REVIEWSBy Jim Price

JIM DONOVAN – “SUN KING WARRIORS” (no label)

In 2005, Jim Donovan amicably left the drum helm of the

multi-platinum selling Rusted Root to raise a family, and sub-

sequently developed a satisfying career as a music educator at

St. Francis University in Loretto. Eventually, though, the itch

to create music started to resurface, and Donovan began to

pen songs and subsequently formed his current band project,

the Sun King Warriors. He began incrementally recording

songs in 2011, with an unexpected 2013 health scare accelerat-

ing the recording toward fruition as the “Sun King Warriors”

CD. Donovan sings, plays guitar and some drums, assisted by

guitarists Dan Murphy and Kevin McDonald, bassist Kent Tonkin, and percussionists Bryan Fazio and Harry Pepper; The Clarks’ Rob James contributes additional guitar and man-

dolin. Described by Donovan

as “a mix of feel good groove-rock, American roots music and two tons of drums,” the disc’s

ten tracks evoke a unique stew

of sounds, mixing hard rock,

reggae, worldbeat, percussion,

acoustic and folk tones; at

times suggesting Rusted Root powered by classic 1970s/80s

arena rock thunder. The music

sets the foundation for Donovan’s mostly positive messages

about life, love and forward motion. The bouncy opening track,

“Blend Into You,” offers a message of love and unity, with an

11-voice ‘Wild Man Shouting Ensemble slamming an exclama-

tion point on the chorus to launch the song’s homestretch. “I’m Doing Fine” is about leaving the past behind and moving ahead,

and the anthemic “You Got to Believe It” triumphantly professes

a theme of putting fear and apprehension in the rearview mir-

ror and stepping one’s game up every day. “Oolalala” rides a

punchy, booming reggae rhythm, while drum thunder takes the

forefront on the percussive charge “March of the Sun King War-riors.” This album contains gentler tones, too – such as Dono-van’s soft-spoken vocals and worldly acoustic tones of “Love On Me,” the African folk-driven father-to-son ode “The One You’re Growing Into,” and the mild and warm vibes of “Can’t Stop Falling” “The Sunshine.” There’s no mistake that Donovan’s heart and soul are invested

into these songs, and the entire album rings with passion and

enthusiasm. His cast of bandmates and sidemen buy into the

music as well, resulting in an uplifting mood that prevails from

start to end. Produced, mixed and recorded by Sean McDonald at Red Medicine Recording Studios in Pittsburgh, “Sun King Warriors” sounds big, deep and vibrant, with vocals, harmonies

and instruments coming through clear and distinct. With “Sun King Warriors”, Jim Donovan crafts a sonic picture of his mind

and soul, and based on that picture, he and his life are in a very

good place. (The CD can be obtained through the website www.sunkingwarriors.com.)

THE HAWKEYES – “ONE PLUG IN THE WALL” (no label)

The Hawkeyes formed in 2010 from the merger of members

from two Pittsburgh-based alt-country acts, The Jay Wiley Band

and The Country Music Gas Station. Their latest CD, “One Plug in the Wall”, hones the group’s brazen brand of driving,

roots-based hard rock. Lead singer/guitarist Jay Wiley, lead

guitarist/singer Michael Grego, drummer Colin Bronnenkant;
