Worship & spiritual life

ST. PATRICK Many legends have developed around St. Patrick (390 - 460), from driving snakes out of Ireland, to using the shamrock to ex-plain the Trinity; however, his popularity stems beyond these sto-ries, to his missionary zeal and astonishing ability to inspire faith. He was sold into slavery at a young age and eventually freed, also he wanted people enslaved by doubt and skepticism to know the liberation found in Jesus Christ. Although he had little education, he was appointed Bishop of Ireland. His many accomplishments include the conversion of Ireland, ordination of clergy, consecra-tion of virgins, and organization of missions to evangelize Europe. St. Patrick’s life has a universal appeal; therefore, his feast day is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of Eng-land, the Episcopal Church in America, and the Evangelical Lu-theran Church in America. He also makes an appearance on the Russian Orthodox calendar. March 17

th is a solemnity and

Holyday of Obligation in Ireland. Parades, corned beef and cab-bage, and service projects usually mark this special day of our favorite Irish saint. Remember to celebrate this saint and to think of the outreach associated with him. Consider serving at a local food pantry as part of your Lenten concern for the poor. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 112)

GOOD FRIDAY

When Pilate spoke the words on Good Friday, “Behold the Man,” he was trying to prove Jesus’ innocence. He had tried Jesus and found nothing in him worthy of the death the Sanhedrin was de-manding. But it wasn’t enough, the crowd demanded Jesus be put to death. Pilate known to be fearful and weak, caved in.

Two thousand years later, Pilate’s word continue to ring out, only now with a prophetic meaning. On this day above all other days, God is asking us to “behold the man.” He is asking us to look at Jesus—wounded, bruised, and crowned with thorns—and see him as our Savior, our Lord and our King.

On Good Friday, join us for Good Friday Services to behold the man of sorrows, acquainted with grief, and see the One who bore all of your sins. See the passionate love that is willing to endure the cross for the sake of your salvation. Behold the man, and know that he embraced this fate because he loves you. He is showing you what the world would look like without him. Behold him and see what he has saved all of us from . Then praise him, Thank him, Worship him, Give him your life today because he gave himself so completely for you.

“Jesus, as I fix my eyes on you, give me a glimpse of the salvation you have won for me . Lord, I want to belong to you alone!”

GOOD FRIDAY SERVICES MARCH 25TH

AT 7:00 PM ST. CYRIL Bishop of Jerusalem and Doctor of the Church, St. Cyril is vener-ated as one of great early Church theologians. Like his contem-poraries, he was embroiled in the Arian controversy and was ex-iled three times for teaching that the Son is fully divine. He is best known for twenty-three lectures to catechumens, encompassing introductory teachings through postbaptismal mystagogy. From them we learn much about catechetical methods of liturgical prac-tices in the early Church, as well as the development of teaching on the Eucharist. He was loved by the people of Jerusalem for charitable works and generosity even raising money by selling gifts from the Emperor , for the poor. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 112)

BACH STATIONS OF THE CROSS We encourage all to join Dr. Charles Hiestand on Friday night at 7:00 PM as he presents this emotional and intellectual piece of music. Bach’s music acting as the commentary came from the famous fugue in C# minor. More of a concert than a traditional stations, but for this pianist it is a work of devotion and prayer.

Dear sisters and brothers:

I hate to talk about money but sometimes it has to be done, especially when it’s good news to be shared! If you’ve been paying attention to the monthly stewardship summary box, you’ve noticed that in February, the parish was blessed with $8,864 more stewardship contributions than budgeted, putting us ahead by $10,493 for the year-to-date ending June 30, 2016. Only a year ago, the parish was in the opposite position, stewardship was behind by $19,335! It is because of your generosity that the parish is in a more stable position and can offer new programs like Sunday School, Youth Group, Wednesday night adult enrichment classes during Lent, and complete much needed facility upgrades (roofs, lights, sound system, toilets, etc.)

Our parish fiscal year does end in June and we are still projecting a budgeted loss of $40,491 at year’s end. Every do-nation puts us closer to the parish ending the year on a stronger note, enabling us to develop new programs, without taking more money out of savings. So, my only request is that you continue your sacrificial giving to the parish so that we end the year on a strong note.

The school also continues to be strong financially. At last Saturday night’s auction, we raised more than $80,000 for the school’s operating budget and an additional $30,000 for a much needed renovation of the auditorium. Thank you to eve-ryone who organized and supported this great event. Again, sorry for talking money but we are doing much better this year than last due to your generous support. Many blessings to you all.

Your brother in Christ, Deacon Roy

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE When Jesus heard about the illness of His friend, Laza-rus, He responded, “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Every aspect of our lives— our suf-ferings as well as our gifts—can, if surrendered to Christ, lead to blessings for ourselves and others.

ALL THAT GLITTERS AUCTION HELD MARCH 5, 2016! This year’s auction was again a great success! Thanks to all of you that came out and supported this annual event! It is a great way to spend an evening out supporting our school! We could not do this without the support of the parish, par-ents and friends. Our team is still tallying up the proceeds and paying the bills. The total proceeds will be announced once the proceeds are finalized. cc

A HUGE thank you to Penny Zeimer and her amazing Auction Committee Team for creating, staging and manning this very difficult and successful event! The worked tirelessly to make the night magically. Also, thank you to our 8th grade volunteers who helped sell raffle tickets and display class projects during the evening. They made everything fun.
