Ted Matz

One Day Workshop members $90.00. non members 120.00

9am-4pm. Friday, January 26, 2018 Boca Raton Community Center

Ted Matz will be returning for a one day workshop

Subject Matter: The Elements of Success The Elements of Success is a workshop that looks at key elements that most painters are very weak in executing, Hue/Value/Temperature. The concentration is on how to make colors more saturated and strong, pushing values for a more dramatic impact and understanding how to control the temperature of a painting and the overall affect it can have on how the painting is interpreted. These three elements are the weakest points in most artists paintings and I will show how they can take a painting from OK to GREAT!

Ask the Watercolor Doctor:by Carol Z. Brody NWS

Question: How does the Palm Beach Watercolor Society choose who will judge a show? Is a judge a member or a non-member of PBWS? Answer: Art organizations have various types of juried shows. Some are juried for entry and for awards, while others are juried for awards only. There is generally a stipend paid to the juror which comes out of the the organization’s treasury. If the group is small and can’t afford to pay a juror, it may choose to have some more experienced members jury the work and hope that favoritism won’t influence the results. Therefore, most art organizations , including PBWS, try to hire an outside person who is known in the field and is presumably open minded. Larger, more well known art societies jury for entry and for awards, and their shows often draw some of the best artists in the country. The prize money they offer can be substantial , which is a big draw. Various watercolor societies around the country offer workshops with nationally known artists, set to correspond with their annual national juried exhibitions, so the instructor can also serve as the juror for the show. The National Watercolor Society, based in California, hires three jurors for its annual international exhibition for entry. The American Watercolor Society in New York City hires five. They view the images and vote by silent buttons, so that each juror cannot be influenced by other’s choice. Nor is there any discussion about the works. Someone else is selected as the awards juror, so the choices are spread around. Competition for acceptance into these shows is fierce, and often only 8-10% of the entries are selected. The top watercolorists in the country are likely to be signature members of either of these two organizations. The signature members are sent an annual ballot to select the jurors for the coming year, and each year provides a new set of jurors and new chances for hopeful exhibitors. I do hope that 2018 is a good year for us all, offering many new acceptances and awards. Now what are we going to paint to submit?   Your Watercolor Doctor,

Carol Z. Brody,

WINNERS OF ART EXHIBIT BOCA RATON COMMUNITY CENTER MEMBER SHOW-December 1 - December 29, 2017

1st Place Midnight Serenade. 2nd Place Observing 3rd Place. Garden Symphony by Saundra Newman by Steve Philbrook by Adrienne Walker

Special Recognition - Breton Harbor Honorable Mentions : Martha Prado - Lee’s Dream by Bob Barfknecht Karen Maestrales - Untitled Marilyn Grant - What Goes Up

Juried By Kris Smith, A professional portrait painter and sculptor utilizing a multitude of media. Kris has had two commissioned portraits hung in the White House. Has appeared on Oprah, MSNBC, ABC, as well as in People Magazine, among many others. Her recent sculptured work includes a 12 ft. statue for the lobby of the Women in Distress Center, Deerfield Beach, FL.She is a Signature Member of the Boca Museum Artist Guild, and an instructor at the Boca Museum Art School.

❀Kris Smith’s Comments: FIRST PLACE: Saundra Newman’s “Midnight Serenade” just made me smile! While executed quite well; it was the subject that I found most delightful and creative. How fun!SECOND PLACE: Technique and preservation were the strong points in Steve Philbrook’s “Observing”. The perfectly thought out frame just completed a truly magnificent piece. Well done!THIRD PLACE: A change of pace for Adrienne Walker’s “Garden Symphony” brought a palette of bright playful colors in a montage of texture and pattern to this happy acrylic!JUDGE’S RECOGNITION: I have never visited Breton Harbor, but Bob Barfnecht’s “Breton Harbor” certainly makes it look peaceful and tempting. Classic watercolor styling make the clouds and water appear to be effortlessly revealed. Well done! HONORABLE MENTION: One can’t help falling in love with this sweet child in Martha Prado’s “Lee’s Dream”. Such a wistful subject translated well! I would like to see her face next time!HONORABLE MENTION: I loved the movement and contrast in Karen Maestrales “Untitled”. I saw water rushing across the canvas. The high contrast of red/green balanced quite well with the dark in the lower right to create dimension. This painting deserves a title!HONORABLE MENTION: Marilyn Grant’s “What Goes Up” sends quite a message! Not only with it’s title but the subject in bright red against the soft blue stairways. It begs a story to be unfolded!
