http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/para-que-se-utiliza-el-pasado-continuo 1/2
Para que se utiliza el pasado continuo:
1. Para hablar sobre acontecimientos que estaban ocurriendo en o en torno a un
momento particular en el pasado - "I was speaking when the telephone rang." (Estaba
hablando cuando sonó el teléfono.) "She was listening to music at noon." (Estaba
escuchando música a mediodia.)2. Para indicar que algo es temporal – "I was living in Madrid." vs. "I lived in Madrid."
Ambas oraciones se traducen: "Vivía en Madrid", pero la primera indica que pienso que
era una situación temporal.
3. Para dar algo más de información de fondo a una historia o anécdota - "I was living in
London when Led Zeppelin gave their first concert in years." (Estaba viviendo en
Londrés cuando Led Zeppelin dió su primer concierto después de años.)
4. Para hablar de situaciones que iban cambiando – "It was getting hotter and hotter."
(Cada vez hacía más calor.)
Yesterday he was studying English. Ayer él estaba estudiando inglés.
(Comenzó a estudiar antes de ese momento y continuó estudiando posteriormente)
El Pasado Continuo se construye con el verbo auxiliar "to be" en su forma pasada y el
verbo principal en infinitivo con la terminación ING:
Observa que la forma negativa se construye colocando la partícula NOT después del
verbo TO BE. Puede usarse también la forma contraída WASN'T o WEREN'T.
También se puede utilizar este tiempo verbal para relatar dos acciones que sucedieron
en el pasado y que una de ellas ya se ha completado. Para ello utilizamos el Pasado
Simple para mencionar lo que ya finalizó y el Pasado Continuo para relatar lo que sigue
ejecutándose.

Past Continuous - (Past Continuous)
The Past Continuous is a tense describes actions that were being made in a time in the
past referred to and then continued, for example:
Yesterday He Was studying English. Yesterday he was studying English.
(He began to study before that time and continued to study later)
John was playing tennis at 10 am John was playing tennis at 10 am
(Began playing tennis before 10 am and continued doing it later)
The Past Continuous is constructed with the auxiliary verb "to be" in its past form andthe main verb in the infinitive with the completion ING:
Note that the negative particle is constructed by placing the NOT after the verb TO BE.
You can also use the contracted form or Were not Was not.
You can also use this tense to describe two things that happened in the past and one of
them has already been completed. We use the Past Simple to mention what has been
completed and the Past Continuous to tell what is still running.

They Were singing When I broke the window.
