The Unilever Series: turbinegeneration is a project about international collaboration and exchange. it provides a social media platform for schools, galleries, artists and cultural institutions to connect worldwide.
Parallel interventions was an in-depth partnership project between Tate, UK and Museo inhotim, brazil that united young people and artists working within the turbinegeneration programme to explore visual communication through collaborative art practice.
28 teenagers on inhotim’s laboratório programme, and an equal number of UK students from Central Saint Martins College of art and Design, University for the Creative arts, rochester and Maidstone and archbishop Tennison School, embarked on a project to look at how effective visual means are in overcoming language differences and to what extent digital and mediated communication can help build international relations.
each group worked closely with practicing artists, educators and art collections in their countries, while making and sharing their own art and ideas with their international counterparts.
Throughout the year the groups have exchanged questions and refined their areas of enquiry before embarking on a series of interventions in and around Tate and inhotim. at Tate Modern this culminated in a public display including live performance, film, photography and interventions as part of the Worlds Together conference.
The UK students formed 3 collectives and each worked with one artist over the course of 6 months. They shared their ideas and methods of working with the laboratório team using Tate learning’s turbinegeneration website and blogs.

The work in this publication has been selected by the UK students as a reflection of their multi-faceted exchange, which stimulated a variety of creative responses and exciting visual dialogues between young people in 2 different cultures and locations.
