Please see overleaf for the list of workshops offered. Registration can be completed online at http://ynpss2015.eventbrite.sg from Thu, 26 February (5 p.m. onwards) to 4 Wed, March (9 p.m.) . If you do not have access to a computing/mobile device and/or the Internet, you may request for the hard copy registration form from the office or through your child’s form teacher. Do note that places for each workshop are available on a first-come-first-served basis and online registrations will receive priority. A confirmation slip will be issued to you through your child/ward after your registration form is submitted online or manually. Please make your payment, through your child/ward, to his/her Form Teacher by Tue, 10 March after you have received the confirmation slip . Invitation to Parents’ Symposium @YNPS on 14 March 2015

1. As part of the school’s efforts to help you support the learning of your children, the school will be holding our inaugural Parents’ Symposium. The symposium aims to equip you with practical strategies to support your child’s/ward’s learning at home. The series of workshops of the various subjects will be conducted by our HODs, LHs and teachers. There will be a minimal fee to help defray the cost of workshop materials and light refreshments.

2. The details of the workshops are as follows:

It will look at the format of situational writing and continuous writing. The workshop aims at helping parents to develop strategies for improving the overall quality of their children’s writing. (Upper Pri)(Model Drawing & other Heuristics Strategies) [NEW]As the word problems become more demanding and abstract, the teachers and parents need to help our children to ‘STAR’ through their way. In order to solve these higher-order questions, the children need to Study the question carefully and understand it. This is followed by Thinking of a plan and Acting on their plan. This session aims to share with you the teaching strategies and Mathematics language that the teachers use in class so that you can better support your child when you are teaching and revising with them at home. Other than sharing the strategies used in the classroom, you will also be exposed to some high-order thinking questions in the Primary 5/6 syllabi. A6 1 Science P5 – P6 Strategies in Acquisition of Science Process SkillsThe workshop will provide participants the insight into the important aspects of learning Science as well as the strategies in the acquisition of Science Process Skills. The presenter will share with participants some methods through which children can be more productively engaged to develop Scientific reasoning and problem solving skills. These processes can meaningfully enhanced children's Scientific experiences and their conceptual understanding in Science. As the workshop focuses on specific topics and processes, it is open to all parents of children who are at upper primary level (P5-P6).

A7 1 Math P1 – P3 Math Comes Alive & Improving Confidence and Achievement in Numeracy (ICAN) strategies [NEW]This workshop is in two parts. In the first part, “Math Comes Alive, the focus is on how to make Mathematics fun and come alive. It looks at games that can be done in a short period in class as part of the normal curriculum. The other part focuses on ICAN strategies which aim to help low progress learners in Mathematics level up on numeracy proficiency. Learning issues that are addressed in the ICAN program are pupils’ learning gaps, confidence and memory.

A8 1 Chinese P1 – P3 An Introductory session about Appreciation Education (赏识教育) [NEW]Appreciation Education, created by Prof Zhou Hong, focusses on a child’s strengths and building on it. It acknowledges disparities and allows room for failure by appreciating what the child has done. The secret of appreciation education lies in infusing inspiration into a child. It also teaches empathy, a lesson that is vital to understanding one another’s feelings and thoughts. This is a lesson in gratitude, an education for which to be eternally happy. This is also an education about passion for life, relishing in the moment and developing a love for the Nature all around us. Appreciation Education is getting more acknowledgements as one of the most effective and innovative education methods in the world.

A9 1 Malay P1 – P3 Strategies For Smart Reading [NEW]Reading is not only the ability to produce sounds of words. A reader must be able to understand the meanings of words and the sentences in the text. The sharing session on Smart Reading provides several reading strategies with the objectives that parents will be able to help their children to understand the content of the reading text and motivate their children to enjoy reading as well as to focus on the various important aspects of reading.

B7 2 Chinese P4 – P6 Comprehension Strategy in the Learning of Chinese Language [NEW]The teacher will introduce different types of comprehension questions which requires comprehension skills such as 'repeat, explain, reorganize, expand, evaluate, create'. You will learn some answering techniques: key word searching, how to make connection and explain contextual meaning, how to answer open-ended question, how to give examples to support views, direct/indirect speech. We will also introduce PQ4R learning methods in comprehension learning. PQ4R is a study technique developed by Thomas E.L and Robinson H.A (1972). The acronym stands for Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite & Review. This study technique can help students with improved understanding.

B8 2 Malay P4 – P6 Strategies for Creative Writing [NEW]Composition is one of the key components in Malay Language. The sharing session on Strategies of Creative Writing will focus on the fundamental elements of creative writing. Parents will be exposed to the elements such as the use of flashback, metaphor, suspense, conflict, climax and anti-climax. These intricate elements will be weaved into the plot of a story to produce an exceptionally good piece of composition.
