Although the motorcyclehad gone sideways insidethe tunnel as the wheelsslipped, Schoeman managed to straighten the bikeand perform the stunt withgreat success. The tunnelwas made from steel withcardboard wrappings onthe sides, which was soaked with diesel and petroland set alight. In a press statement the Ngwathe Local Mu-nicipality expressed its concern with the ca-ble theft resulting in last week’s almost 24hour power outage in the central businessarea as well as certain residential areas.

According to municipal spokesperson, MrSteve Naale, a 185/11kv main undergroundcable of between 350 and 400m (valued atabout R1 000 per metre) supplying the townand major bulk supply points with electrici-ty, was stolen from the main Eskom sub-sta-tion. This caused chain reaction damage tosome parts of the network with transformersbeing damaged, as well as other ancillaryitems at the substation. The overall damageis anticipated to be around R6 million, saysNaale.

Eighty five metres of this cable was repla-ced just more than a year ago.

The power outage caused secondary emer-gencies with water shortage due to the waterpurification plant that was also without elec-

tricity. Back-up contingency plans had to beimplemented to keep operations running.The loss of electricity sales is estimated atmore than R1 million, Naale said.

Apart from the effect of the power outageand water shortages felt at the hospital, cli-nics, centers for the aged and disabled andresidential homes, and businesses dependingon water for income, the whole business sec-tor suffered enormous financial losses, ha-ving to either close for the business day orclose earlier. According to municipality theunderground copper lines will now be repla-ced with non-copper overhead lines.

A case of theft has been registered withthe Parys Police and residents who mighthave seen people digging up behind the elec-trical sub-station is asked to assist the policewith information. Meanwhile the municipa-lity confirmed that they will continue puttingup jojo tanks to assist in areas highly affectedby water shortages.

Warm smiles greeted the bikers and organisers of the Rhino Rallywhen theystoppedat theRatangMaqhekuOldAgeCentre inTumahole on Saturday to hand over a donation. This scarf was knittedby a 94yearold lady, the oldest resident of the centre, for SimonFourie, organiser of theRhinoRally, as a ‘thank you’ gesture. Apartfrom the Ratang Maqheku Centre, the bikers also handed over adonation to the Tumahole Selfhelp Association for the Disabled.

The past weekend’s Rhino Rally, with an estimated 9 000 bikesand between 12 000 and 13 000 bikers who enjoyed the hospitalityand beauty of Parys for the weekend, has been described by boththe police and the organisers as very successful. The overall feedback has been tremendously positive with special note of thanksto the public for the cooperation and friendliness shown towardsthe visitors, despite the noise and busy streets residents had tocope with for what has been described as the biggest rally in SAhistory. A total of 53 medical calls had been received by the JointOperation Centre over theweekend (not only rally related) varyingfrom asthma attacks to accidents. Of the 6 accidents reported atthe centre, only one in town had been serious with a coupleseriously injured in Breë Street after colliding with a vehicle. Onebiker also died in an accident on the Viljoenskroon road on Saturday afternoon. Crime statistics for the weekend were very low inParys in comparison with other rallies, with only one bike stoleninside the Afri Dome, while a trailer and bike were also stolen outside the Afri Dome area. No rally related assaults were reported.Thisphotowas takenduring themass ridewith residents standingalongside the streets and at the park in Eerstelaan to greet thebikers.

Hierin lê die probleem: Daar is heelwatmeer pensioentrekkers as wat daar perso-

neel is wat uitbetaal. Ongeduldigheid, ge-swets en kwade gevoelens is die gevolg.

Daarom wil ek dié wat ongeduldig enontevrede is direk aanspreek. Mense, julleis nie alleen nie. Ons roei saam in hierdiebootjie. Almal moet lank wag en onthou,dit is nie ons reg om pensioen te trek in’n supermark nie. Dit is wel ’n voorreg.

Ek wil dan ook persoonlik al die betrok-ke personeel van die supermarkte bedankvir die professionele diens, die geduld enhoflikheid wat elke maand betoon word.Dit word hoog op prys gestel.

We all know that using drugs are bad for ourhealth and have been hearing this from parents,teachers and friends who have been negativelyaffected by this, either directly or through otherfamily members abusing drugs.What are drugs?Drugs are substances that change your per-

ception of the world, making you feel eithervery excited, wanting to do things that youwould not necessarily do on a daily basis ormaking you feel very relaxed to the extentwhe-re nothing worries you.Effects on different people:We have all heard at least one person telling

us that drugs does not affect them. But is it thetruth? Our bodies have natural stimulants thatallow us to naturally reach a state of feelingarousal (very happy) or help the body to staycalm. Misusing substances can change thismechanism in our bodies, making us feel eu-phoric or very relaxed to a point where we arenon-functional or not aware of what we aredoing.What causes addiction?For some there is a genetic linkwhichmeans

that you can be predisposed to becoming addic-ted to things because of your genes. Anotherreason could be your personality. This meanslooking at the experience of an emotion.

People who have a positive affect are at riskof becoming addicted because they enjoypleasurable experiences. People with a negati-ve affect (who are more prone to e.g. depres-sion) aremore easily affected by substances be-cause they feel they are unable to cope withlife stressors. Because none of us know if wehave the genetic link and as we see, both perso-

nality types can become addicted; the safest isto stay away from drugs completely.Why is drug abuse such a big problem?Drug abuse increases your risk to unsafe ac-

tivities. These include:•Violence•Increased unprotected sex which could re-

sult in you contracting an STI (Sexually Trans-mitted Infections) and possibly HIV/AIDS.

•Possible suicide•Mental Health ProblemsWhat can be done to fight addiction?Short treatment includes:•Educating the person about the effects of

substance abuse•Providing safer option to release stress•Confronting the person about the effects of

them using substances and what it is doing tothemselves and family.Other treatment includes:•Community and Family rehabilitation is

important - where family is trained to use posi-tive reinforcement with the person, and wherethe community is taught to be supportive to theneeds of the person to prevent a relapse (persongoing back to using drugs).What can Occupational Therapy assist

with?We can help with time management to help

the person to work better with their time andnot feel the need to use substances to pass thetime.

Social skills training so that the people whoused drugs can fix the relationships that brokedown, as well as Lifestyle Rehabilitation sothat they can learn new pleasurable activitiesand use their time constructively.

All these treatments will work together sothat the person can be better integrated into thecommunity.

rys, this week said it could be this reassuran-ce, provided in the form of an endorsed certi-ficate from a recognised mortgage originatoror similar accredited financial services pro-vider, which sways the seller. Or in a casewhere it looks like competing offers mayshortly be made for the same property, hesaid the pre-qualified certificate could clinchthe deal for the buyer.Historically most banks were prepared to

do a formal home loan pre-approval, whichbasically guaranteed that the finance wouldbe made available to the buyer on request.“The banks have moved away from the

pre-approval service because it requiresthem to go through a complete mortgage ap-plication process with very little client loyal-ty when taking up the bond. Historically thepre-approval took as long as an application.This resulted in duplication and bottlenecksin approving legitimate bond applicationsand so the banks stopped this service,” saidde Jager.To aid and inform homebuyers Ooba in-

troduced formal and certificated pre-qualifi-cation. This is not the absolute guarantee of-fered in a pre-approved scenario, but it doesdetail the financing options available to a po-tential buyer subject to them meeting thebank’s lending criteria. Saal de Jager said

Ooba uses similarcredit scoring mo-dels as the banks inissuing its pre-quali-fication certificates.“As a result the

number of Ooba pre-qualified clients notbeing granted a bondwhen a formal bankapplication is made,is minimal. Pre-qua-lification really doesgive both the buyerand the seller peaceof mind,” said de Ja-ger.For buyers there

are a number of advantages. First, it introdu-ces them to the process of applying for amortgage.This is particularly useful for first-time

homebuyers. They get a clear indication ofwhat they will be required to show the bankson formal application, and don’t feel intimi-dated when the formal application gets un-derway. Buyers also get a clear view of theirbudget range and can house hunt accor-dingly.Once they’ve found their house, the pro-

cess of originating a mortgage for them isquicker as the bulk of the required informa-tion is already on hand.For the seller a pre-qualified mortgage

certificate indicates a serious buyer. It indi-cates the buyer’s ability to secure funding.The pre-qualified buyer will, in all likeli-

hood, be granted finance swiftly.Many sellers lock themselves into a sale

and then wait for the buyer’s finance to beapproved. If finance is not granted, the chan-ces are the serious buyers have moved onand the seller has to start the marketing oftheir property from scratch.De Jager said Ooba has invested a signifi-

cant amount in the technology and infra-structure required to provide pre-qualifica-tion certificates.Among the clutter of speculative offers to

sell, and less than serious buyers, the pre-qualified certificate sends a clear signal ofintent. That might be all it takes to clinchthe deal.Harcourts Parys works hand in hand with
