The Ngwathe Municipality has embarkedon the immediate closure and subsequent re-moval of the dumping site next to the muni-cipal ‘magasyn’ stores, near the provincialtraffic department offices towards Tumaho-le.

Several complaints about the site hasbeen made in the past, also at the Fezile Dabi

Disctrict Municipality’s Health Depart-ment.

The site was initially utilised as a drop-off zone for collection of garden refuse andlight refuse for recycling projects.

Security personnel and informationboards guiding people to the Dover Roadlandfill site will now be placed as that is the

only authorised dumping area.The public is requested to cooperate in

this regard as this is part of municipality’sprogram of action aimed at keeping thetown clean and maintaining a clean environ-ment, municipality said.

The site opposite the ‘Magasyn’ will soonbe utilised as site camp for the Kruis Street

Road Construction Project. Municipal lawenforcement officers will be monitoring il-legal dumping throughout the municipalityand issue fines to perpetrators, municipalspokesperson, Steve Naale, said. He addedthat in the meantime, the municipality shallbe intensifying their refuse removal pro-gram.

Cucumber soupHeat 20 g margarine in saucepan and fry

1 leek (split and sliced), 1 sliced celery stick,125 g cucumber (peeled and chopped) and1 peeled and chopped potato for 10 minutesuntil soft. Add 300mlwater, 1 chicken stockcube and seasoning. Bring to the boil, redu-ce heat, cover and simmer for 15 minutes.

Remove from heat and purée until smooth.Add 10 ml chopped parsley; return soup tosaucepan and add 100 ml whipped cream;reheat without boiling. Serve hot or cold and

garnish with cucumber slices.

Fillet steaks with mushroom sauceFry 2 thick fillet or rump steaks in hot

butter to desired doneness - remove fromthe pan and keep warm. Sauce: Add 100 gwiped and sliced mushrooms to pan and fryuntil soft. Add 15 ml flour, 100 ml dry whitewine, a dash of sherry, 100 ml chicken stockand 20 ml whole peppercorns. Stir conti-nuously, allowing sauce to boil and thicken.Remove from the heat and stir in 60 mlcream and seasoning. Spoon over steaks,serve hot with baked potato/rice and a salad.

Coffee custard heartsPASTRY (for two hearts): Place 25 g

margarine, 125 ml water and pinch of saltin saucepan and bring to the boil. Add 100ml flour, mix well until paste leaves the si-des of the pan clean. Add 1 beaten egg gra-

dually beating well until mixture is smoothand shiny. Pipe small heart shapes ontogreased baking tray. Bake in preheated ovenof 230°C for 10 to 15 minutes. Reduce tem-perature to 190°C and bake a further 20 mi-nutes. Remove from oven and carefully cutin half. Scrape out the moist centre of thetop half of each heart. Set aside.

Coffee custard: Bring 200 ml milk to boiland stir in 5ml instant coffee powder. Beattogether 2 egg-yolks with 50 ml castor sugaruntil pale and creamy. Beat in 15 ml corn-flour. Stir in milk mixture and return to sau-cepan. Cook over low heat until mixturethickens. Strain if required; allow to cool.Pipe mixture onto halved pastry hearts andtop with ‘lids’; pipe remaining custard intocentres of hearts and dust with icing sugarand decorate with cherries.

summer season, but what a blessing it waswith up to 98 mm of rain for Parys between1 and 5 February, with 21 mm on the 1st ofFebruary alone.During 2013 it was winter from late April,

withminus temperatures until the end of June.Then, suddenly it was summer...a good two

months earlier than usual with an unbelieva-ble 22 degrees on the 4th of July. The daytimetemperatures remained steady, averaging 19degrees until the 24th of August, when itclimbed to 24 degrees. Our last very brief coldspell was on the 31st of August and the 1stof September when it was minus 4 degreeswith a maximum of 11 degrees. Just as sud-denly after that, our early summer became areality with temperatures climbing steadilyfrom 24 to 29 to 32 degrees. What happenedto spring?Summer gardening conditions with regular

drizzles to water our gardens throughout lateSeptember and October were perfect. Fromearly November there was no mercy and itbecame apparent that we could prepare for so-me very hot days as the mercury rose to 33degrees on the 14th of November. However,intermittent showers throughout Novemberand December provided us with wonderfulcool Christmas weather conditions and stun-ning gardens! The rainfall for these twomonths amounted to 270 mm.Then, without mercy, the 1st of January

2014 arrived with temperatures hovering inthe mid 30’s. The fun was over. We sufferedendless days of unbelievable heat and no rain,except for a mere 5 mm on the 8th of January,4 mm on the 19th, 2 mm on the 21st, 1 mmon the 24th, 3 mm on the 27th and 4 mm onthe 31st.With January normally considered “flood

month” we had a mere 19 mm for the entiremonth of January 2014 (44 mm measured at

some places), compared to 142 mm in 2013,and a record rainfall of 355 mm during theflood in 2010. January 2014 must have beenthe hottest and driest month on record.With the onslaught of the heat, there was

no mercy for our gardens and many preciousplants were burnt to a frazzle in temperaturestouching the 34 degree mark. As a result, mo-re of the December beauty was sadly destroy-ed.Worst punishment of all was the almost

daily weather forecasts with promises of rain.We waited...and kept looking up at the skyfor relief - almost like farmerswaiting to planttheir crops.By the 25th of January the heat was almost

unbearable at 35 degrees. This persisted re-lentlessly until the morning of the 27th whenwe woke up to cloudy skies, a cool breezeand from 14:00 a slight drizzle. At last theheat had abated!More daily weather forecasts followed -

predicting up to 60 percent possibilities ofrain. On the morning of the 30th things werelooking better. Cloudy and cool most of theday, but by 16:00 the sun was beating downagain and the cloud cover had dissipated oncemore! What a disappointment! Then, miracu-lously, almost as a consolation 4mm of rainfell on the 31st.Fortunately, unlike 2013, there has been no

hail so far, but Mother Nature seems to befickle this season and we can expect anythingfrom her.Soon the heat and drought will be forgot-

ten, when the mercury starts to plummet oncemore and wewill be wrapped up in our winterwoolies, shivering and dreaming of a beauti-ful spring to come.The never ending cycle of the seasons. Per-

haps we can even expect an early and verycold winter?But... be warned! February, a notoriously

hot month still lies ahead.

Die Valsrivier-rolbalklub in Vredefort het dieafgelope naweek ’n borgdag aangebied metspanne van Vredefort, Koppies, Kroonstaden Heckroodt wat deelgeneem het.

Valsrivier (Vredefort) het die eerste en der-de plekke ingepalm met een van Koppies sespanne in die tweede plek.

Die span wat eerste was, was Gert Oost-

huizen, Louis Olivier, Gert Olivier en Hen-riette Havenga. Tweede was Jaco Swart, RJSwart, Julandie Swart en Marietta Swart. Indie derde plek was Hannes Bruwer, RoelineBruwer, Sakkie Chambers en Bets Cham-bers.

Valsrivier hou rolbal-borgdag

Op die foto is die wenners van die Valsrivierrolbalborgdag.

Sintiche Steyn van Parys, ’n lid van die Dag-breek Hengelklub, het in 2013 as die jongsteJunior by die Gauteng Proewe, haar Gau-

teng-kleure verwerf. Dit was boonop haareerste deelname aan die Junior SA Hengel-kampioenskappe wat by Bloemhof Sandveld

van 9 tot 11 Desembergehou is. Sy het Gautengverteenwoordig.

Die son was buitenge-woon warm, die watermin, winde stormsterken elke hengelaar is totdie uiterste beproef, maardie junior hengelaars hetnie terug gestaan vir eni-ge van hierdie elementenie.

Elke dag het die kin-ders van 07:00 tot 15:00gehengel, vir 3 dae aan-een, en hul oefendae isnie ingereken nie.

Ten spyte van die feitdat Bloemhofdam slegs20% vol was, en dit maarmoeilik gegaan het omby dieper water uit te

kom, het hulle werklik goed presteer en sak-ke vol vis gevang. Trouens, net om by diewater uit te kom was klaar ’n gestoei. Diealtesame 324 hengelaars het in 3 dae se tydnie minder nie as 17 958 vis aan wal gebring!Die skale het gekreun en het net so oor die16 ton getrek!

kampioenskappe se prysuitdeling by Bloem-hof, tydens ’n deftige dinee gehou.

Sintiche is die aand genooi om aan die SA-VOF (Suid Afrikaanse Varswater Oewer Fe-derasie) proewe deel te neem.

Sy het weer moes hengel op 13 en 14 De-sember by Verlatenskraal, Bloemhof.

Uitgeput na die SA’s waar Gauteng twee-de plek verower het uit 8 provinsiale spanne,het sy steeds moedig haar plek vol gestaanen haar hart uitgehengel.

Die keuringsproses was streng volgensSuid Afrikaanse reëls en regulasies gedoenen is sy gekies vir die SAVOF Jonge Dame-span vir 2014.

Dankie aan die borge wat Sintiche onder-steun het om die sukses moontlik te maak.

Sintiche Steyn wat gekies vir die SuidAfrikaanse Varswater Oewer Federasie (SAVOF)se Jonge Damespan vir2014.

All runners are reminded of the ValentinesDay Runs tomorrow (Friday 14 February)at Vaal De Grace. Remember that the 10km Night Run and 5km Romantic Fun Runwill both be starting at 18:30. Wear red- there is a prize for the best dressed manand woman with a Valentines theme. Thecourse is traffic free and suitable for wheel-

chairs and pushchairs. Walkers are welco-me to partake in the 5km. Entries at theClub House can be made from 17:00. Thecost is 10 km - R40, the 5 km - R25 adultsand R10 for children. You can order a pic-nic basket or book dinner at Vaal De Grace.Entry to the picnic area is R20 for adults,no charge for children. No braais.

Dit wat ’n taai stryd vir Parys toe daarverlede Donderdagaand in Kroonstad opdie rugbyveld gedraf is vir ’n kragmetingteen die Kroonstadse span. Met Kroon-stad wat al ’n geruime tyd in die Bloem-fontein-streek eerste liga speel, en ookdie wenners van die liga in 2013 was,wat dit inderdaad ’n uitdaging.

Ten spyte van ’n nat veld het Paryshul man gestaan en vir die eerste 70 mi-nute die telling op 7-7 gehou. Ongeluk-kig het Kroonstad in die laaste 10 minutedie telling opgestoot na 26-10 en het Pa-rys die stryd verloor.

Vanjaar is die eerste jaar wat Parysaan die eerste liga deelneem, en speelhulle 80 minute wedstryde in vergely-kingmet die ander ligas wat net 60minu-te speel.

Dit was ’n goeie oefengeleentheid virdie span.

Parys speel nog ’n vriendskaplikewedstryd Saterdagmiddag teen Elsburgop Elsburg se tuisveld. Die afskoptyd sal17:00 wees en ondersteuners kan BarendWolmarans by 072 177 1913 skakel virnavrae.
