United States Patent 0” 1 3,532,782 POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE GRANULAR POWDER AND PROCESS FOR ITS MANU FACTURE Robert Hartwimmer, Bnrghausen, Salzach, Germany, a s signor t o Farbwerke Hoechst Aktiengesellschaft, Frank furt am ain, Germany, a corporation of Germany No rawing. Filed Dec. 20, 1966, Ser. No. 603,170 Claims priority, applicFatigggermany, Dec. 30, 1965, 3 Int. (:1. césf 47/02 US. Cl. 264-117 8 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A ne-step process for preparing granulated polytetra ?uoroethylene from the corresponding pulverized mate rial b y admixing a dispersing agent comprising an alkane containing hydroxyl or amino groups or coupled product thereof, the ratio of pulverized material-to-dispersing agent utilized being about 1:1-10; maintaining the mix ture at a temperature o f about 20-300° C. and separating the granulated polytetra?uoroethylene from dispersing agent. The polymerization o f tetra?uoroethylene in an aque ous medium under pressure and in the presence of a substance forming free radicals provide polymers which, prior to their processing into bands, ?lms and foils, pipes, shaped articles and intermediate products, have t o b e after-treated correspondingly to their applications, o n account of their non uniform shape and size o f particles. According t o US. Pat. No. 2,936,301, the grinding o f polytetra?uoroethylene (PTFE) exposed i n a whirl of air or gases to the shearing force of a pulverizer a t a temperature in the range of from 1 9 to 327° C. leads to a downy powder which has a high proportion of ? brous particles and which is said t o b e particularly suit able for making thin sheets, bands and foils. For making shaped articles i n a ram or screw extruder, the PTFE-powders usually obtained by polymerization are not suitable since they tend to stick and therefore are di?icult to convey and to dose. A rocessing of this kind requires a material having good ?ow properties and a very uniform grain size. Such properties are peculiar to granules. PTFE can, however, not be granulated b y usual methods. According t o US. Pats. Nos. 3,087,921 and 3,152,201, granule-like PTFE-products can be ob tained b y heating i n a ?rst step normal unsintered PTFE to a temperature i n the range of from 5 0 t o 400° C., with or Without the application o f pressure, whereby the non uniform porous particles are sintered o r baked t o gether thus the hitherto loose i s erated. After having been cooled, the polytetra?uoro ethylene thus treated i s then reduced, i n a second step, to small particles while applying shearing forces. The present invention provides a one~step process for preparing gran ules of polytetra?uoroethylene, which comprises heating a polytetra?uoroethylene powder, with agitation for a certain period of time, to temperatures i n the range of from room temperature t o the sintering temperature, preferably from room temperature (20° C.) t o 150° C., i n the presence o f appropriate dispersing agents-prefer ably alkanes carrying several hydroxy and/or amino groups, and/or compounds which can formally be d e rived from the aforementioned alkanes b y coupling them by means of the substituents. Compared with the known processes, the process o f the present invention has the advantage of being a one step process directly providing granules from PTFE powder and capable of being already carried out a t sur 20 30 40 60 65 7 0 3,532,782 Patented Oct. 6 , 1970 CC 2 prisingly low temperatures. The article size can be varied within wide limits b y changing the stirring speed, varying o r diluting the suspending agent. It is possible, according t o the invention, to obtain granules with such a variety o f particle sizes as, for example, i n the range o f from 100 to 400p, 500 t o 1,'O0O,u. or 1,000 t o 3,000/1. a s the main portion, but also particle sizes of a diameter rang ing from 5 to 1 mm. and more. In the process o f the invention, neither considerable pressures nor great shear ing forces nor high temperatures act upon the polymer in?uences which, a s is known, may adversely affect the ?ne structure o f a polymer. The individual particles o f a granulated PTFE-material obtained according t o the invention, predominantly have a globular shape and a smooth solid, but not hard sur face, which i s relatively non-porous. I is for this reason that the granules obtained have excellent ?ow properties and do not tend t o form lumps, a tendency which is, t o a high extent, peculiar t o untreated PTFE-powders. The product obtainable according t o the process of the present invention can easily b e transported on conveyor bands and chutes, it does not pile u p i n funnels and charging tubes, thus facilitating dosing and accumulation, proper ties which are extremely important for the processing of the polytetrafluoroethylene i n ram o r screw extruders. Needing n o preliminary sintering, the product maintains, i n spite o f its good flow properties and its smooth and hard surface, a certain ductibility and a soft ?ow under elevated pressure, which are o f advantage t o the trans parency, smoothness and lack of pores of the shaped ar ticles made with extruders. The after-treatment according to the invention does not at all adversely affect the good mechanical, thermal and electrical properties o f the poly tetrafluoroethylene. According t o the process of the invention, all PTFE types can be granulated, n o matter Whether it is a n ultra ?nely ground suspension polymer (less than 50p), a n untreated suspension polymer (100-400p) o r a relatively coarse-grained PTFE-powder (300-750p) or whether the soft and ductile material that can b e precipitated from a PTFE-dispersion, is intended t o b e used. Unsintered PTFE s particularly used for the process of the inven tion, a s i s obtained by the known polymerization proc esses (cf. German Patent No. 1,109,370). I n addition there, mixtures of the several pulverulent PTFE-types with each other can also b e granulated; PTFE-products which are modi?ed b y incorporating by polymerization small amounts o f other per?uoro-ole?ns, are also suitable for granulation according t o the process o f the invention. For obtaining the highest possible powder density, i t is advisable, in many cases, t o degas the PTFE-powder by establishing a vacuum for a short period o f time, prior to the addition of the dispersing agent. Dispersing agents according to the invention are pref erably alkanes carrying hydroxy and/or amino groups, and/ r compounds that can be derived from these alkanes by coupling them by means of the hydroxy and/ r amino groups, or mixtures of these compounds, for example eth ylene glycol, propane-diol-(LZ), propane-diol-(l.3), b u tane-diol-(1.3), butane-diol-( 1.4) a s well a s pentaue-diols and -triols, moreover glycerol, diethylene glycol, triethyl ene glycol, ethanolamine and diethanolamine, ethylene d i amine, propylene diamine. When suspended in these com pounds, the PTFE articles distinctly tend t o form larger grains b y agglomeration, after a slight increase in temper ature. This typical effect produced b y the dispersing agents is intensi?ed y stirring, so that uniform, predominantly globular particles having a smooth relatively non-porous surface i s formed. This effect is very surprising since PTFE-powders which are treated under the same conditions and a t the same
