Only the outward drive is di-vided into days with suggested sidetrips, so leave something for yourreturn journey. Distances are quiteshort, which allows plenty of time toenjoy yourself along the way, espe-cially as you enter the more relaxingatmosphere of the coast beyondRayong.
Your car allows you to choose. Youcan visit excellent seafood restaurants(sea maps), take country roads notsuggested as side trips, and even re-turn via Sa Kaeo province (shown onlyon the map) to explore inland Thai-land on your own.

rom Mae Phim Beach, H3161 goesto Klaeng, skirting a flat landscape
of villages, prawn farms and mangroveforests typical of the river estuaries onthis coast. The road passes a parkcelebrating Thailand’s classical 19thcentury poet, Sunthorn Phu, after 3kms. A side road next to the park givesaccess to the estuary east of Laem MaePhim.
From Klaeng, Highway 3 runsbetween the estuaries and increasinglyhigher mountains that peak at Soi Dao
F
Nua (1605m) north of theprovincial capital of Chan-taburi.
Waterfalls tumble offthe high, jungle-cladmountains, whose proxi-mity to the sea has cre-ated a rainy climate idealfor fruit production. Chan-taburi is the centre for thepungent durian fruit, which is celebrated witha fruit festival in the har-vest season at the begin-ning of May.
Chantaburi lies closeto sapphire and rubymining regions and thegem trading area along SiChan Rd. throngs withtraders on Fridays andSaturdays. Nearby depos-its at Bo Rai are largelyexhausted, but stonescome from Phailin inCambodia and elsewhere.
Chantaburi was dominated by theKhmer from Angkor in the 14thcentury, and repeatedly invaded fromCambodia in the 16th. In 1767 PhrayaTaksin occupied the city after theBurmese destruction of the Siamesecapital of Ayutthaya. From Chantaburihe began the campaign that forced theBurmese out of Siam and secured thepolity that evolved into modernThailand.
From the 18th century Chantaburiprovided a haven for Christiansfleeing persecution in Vietnam andlater attracted many overseas Chinese. The Catholic cathedral was completedin 1909 and may be reached by foot-bridge across the river from Rim NamStreet, a charming narrow street forwalking and sampling the city’sChinese-Vietnamese rice-noodles.Chantaburi’s thriving night market isalso within close walking distance.

Bilingual (Thai/English)road signs indicate destina-tions and route numbersbefore intersections andshow the road number anddistance to the next maindestination after the intersec-tion. Kilometre markers showthe road and kilometrenumber on the front face.Distances in the direction oftravel are found on the sideof the stone.
