Rafael Bidarra Delft University of Technology
THE NETHERLANDS
Topic:
How'd You Like Your World Today?
Abstract:
Rafael Bidarra is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Delft University of Technology, where he
leads the Game Technology Research Lab at the Computer Graphics and Visualization Group. In this
keynote, he will address the current game development challenge of coping with the huge amount of
content in increasingly large game worlds. Much research has been seeking solutions for automating
the content generation process. Procedural methods presently offer very promising results, but are still
far from application in mainstream game development practice due to a number of shortcomings. He
will discuss some of their drawbacks, and how they can be overcome, and introduce declarative
modeling of virtual worlds, an approach aimed at enabling non‐technical professionals to build virtual
worlds as they please. A variety of research results will be illustrated with recent examples.

approach
Hoda ElMaraghy University of Windsor
CANADA
Topic:
Variety in Design and Manufacturing ‐ Challenges and Opportunities
Abstract:
Professor ElMaraghy holds a Canada Research Chair and is Director of the University of Windsor
Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Centre (IMSC). She is a member of CIRP, and regularly organizes
academic conferences including the International Conference on Changeable, Agile, Reconfigurable and
Virtual Production. Recently, with support from the Ontario government, the IMSC established a new
Innovation Design Studio and Transformable Manufacturing System that will allow users to develop
product ideas from conceptualization to prototyping, design virtual assembly systems, and then build
their product in a real‐world, truly reconfigurable factory in the laboratory. Her keynote is entitled
"Variety in Design and Manufacturing ‐ Challenges and Opportunities".

Michael Heck Visualization Sciences Group
USA
Topic:
An Interface Based API for Mesh Visualization
Abstract:
Michael Heck is the Chief Technology Advisor at Visualization Sciences Group (www.vsg3d.com),
provider of the Open Inventor and MeshViz software development toolkits for 3D visualization in
scientific and engineering applications. His keynote is entitled "An Interface Based API for Mesh
Visualization", and describes the design and implementation of MeshViz XLM. Large meshes and the
associated data are a key challenge in many CAD domains. The API avoids data duplication, and supports
polygonal cells and parametric nonlinear cells. The "Everything is a Mesh" approach maintains a
consistency at all dimensions, with an isosurface being a mesh extracted from a volume mesh, and a
contour line being extracted from a surface mesh, etc.

bidirectional information pipeline connectivity from the CAD level to the process level.
Dave Edstrom MTConnect Institute
USA
Topic:
MTConnect: How An Open Protocol is Changing Manufacturing
Abstract:
Dave Edstrom is President and Chairman of the Board ‐ MTConnect Institute. His keynote, entitled
"MTConnect: How An Open Protocol is Changing Manufacturing", will describe the fundamental shift
that is happening in manufacturing with productivity that is being sparked by the open, royalty free and
open source protocol MTConnect. This presentation will discuss how small shops and large plants are
selecting MTConnect as the connection protocol between their shop floors and their applications to
improve productivity. MTConnect is not an application, but a protocol that is making it very easy to get
information off manufacturing equipment in an easy to read format as well as making it very easy for
applications to read that data so problems can be found and fixed so productivity can go up. Dave is also
the CEO/CTO for Virtual Photons Electroncs and has been in the computer industry for 33 years,
including 23 years with Sun Microsystems in a variety of leadership positions. He has been working with
AMT ‐ The Association for Manufacturing Technology as the Director for the Office of Strategic
Innovation.

10th Annual CAD Conference June 17‐20, 2013 – Bergamo, Italy
It is a pleasure to announce that the 10th anniversary International CAD Conference and Exhibition is
planned to be held in Bergamo, Lombardy Region, Italy, June 17‐20, 2013.
Lombardy Region lies in the north of the
country, sharing a border with
Switzerland. Stretching from the Alps to the
lowlands of the Po Valley, it is home to a wide
range of landscapes, including the breath‐taking
mountain chain, the charm of the great lakes,
such as Garda Lake, Como Lake and Maggiore
Lake.
Beside Milan, the Region includes
historical and industrial cities, such
Bergamo, Brescia and others, where
history, art and culture are
harmoniously combined with
innovation, technology, fashion,
entertainment and a contemporary
outlook.
Contributions from all aspects of CAD are expected including Modeling, Analysis, High‐Performance
Graphics, Data Management, Knowledge Engineering, Collaborative Design, Reverse Engineering, and
Prototyping. Applications can be in Architecture, Bio‐ Medicine, Civil Engineering, Fashion Industry,
Industrial Design, Sustainable Energy Design, etc.
