Thanks for your e-mail which I received yesterday. I had fun reading about

how you celebrate Christmas in Australia.

In Malaysia, I celebrate Deepavali, a Hindu festival. It is also known as the

Festival of Lights. The festival is a joyous occasion. On the morning of Deepavali, my

mother will pour oil on my head. This is known as oil bath. After my bath, I will wear

new clothes. It is a suit of traditional Indian costume. Then my family and I will head

to the temple to pray.

After that, my sister and I will touch our parents’ feet for blessing and

forgiveness. It is a custom that we have been practicing for years. My parents will

then give us a packet containing money. Next, my relatives and friends will be

visiting our house. We all will enjoy the food that my mom prepared. At night, we will

play firecrackers. I love to watch the oil lamps lighted around my house.

I hope you enjoyed reading about Deepavali. It would be wonderful if

we could celebrate the festival together one day.

Every morning, I take the commuter train to work. Travelling in a commuter train is so

interesting because you get to see all kinds of people travelling in it. I like travelling in a

commuter train.

One reason is because I do not have to rush. The commuters ply every twenty minutes.

The coaches are air-conditioned and clean. If you can get a place to sit, you will feel so

comfortable. If you are travelling to a distant place, you can also take twenty winks.

The seats are cushioned and are always clean. I travel from Kajang to Sungai Buloh

every morning. At the Kajang Station, the commuter is always packed with passengers.

Most of the time, I do not get a seat. Most of the passengers will get down Kuala Lumpur

Sentral Station and commuter becomes quite empty. I will then get a seat and complete

my journey for another forty-five minutes comfortably.

There are three-coaches specially dedicated to female passengers. Male passengers

are not suppose to travel in these coaches. Another interesting thing is that you can even

charge your handphone batteries in the coaches.

Sometimes, when I am not working, I just take a ride from Kajang to Tanjung Malim and

travel back to Kajang after a few hours in Tanjung Malim. I like the long ride because the

commuter is comfortable and interesting. You can see hordes of tourists taking the

commuter.

Mahmud, the fisherman, uncorked the bottle and a cloud of smoke appeared,

revealing a genie. The majestic looking creature hovered over the air and glared at

the fisherman.

Mahmud looked at the genie in owe and stuck out his hand towards the genie.

The genie gave a huff and looked away.

“Fisherman, I will give you one wish! Choose the manner in which you would like

to perish!”

He exclaimed, “Oh Genie! Why do you want to kill me? I freed you!”

“I suppose that it is only fair to tell you my story before I wipe you off the face of the

Earth,” came the reply.

“It is simple. I have waited and waited for a long, long time for someone to free

me. In my first hundred years of being the genie in the bottle, I vowed to grant the

first person to free me all the riches in the world, but no one did. Then, in my next

hundred years as a slave of the bottle, I said to myself that I would grant my savior 3

wishes a week if he should free me. Alas, no one did. Then, in my third century as a

prisoner of the bottle, I vowed that the one who released me would be granted

three wishes a day. No one did. Now, I have been held inside this miserable bottle

for another hundred years and you, you released me. However, I had promised

myself, that I would grant my rescuer one wish – that is to choose the manner in

which he would like to die for I am tired and angry. So, now choose!” bellowed the

genie.
