PERSPECTIVES OF DEVELOPMENT

Revision of the Belgrade Convention (BC) of 1948 in process by a Preparatory Committee composed of the representatives of the Contracting Parties of the BC.

Improving the institutional aspects of the Convention and reforming the Commission with a view to adapt it to the present realities and in order to provide it with the tools needed for dealing with the challenges of the future, new fields of activities, including social, economic, cultural areas.

Strengthening free navigation and non-discriminatory policies with the view to facilitate closer cooperation and future integration of inland navigation in Europe.

PERSPECTIVES OF DEVELOPMENT

Harmonization of technical prescriptions, rules and standards, as well as of legal provisions in force on the Danube, on the Rhine, within the European Union, and those adopted by the UNECE, with the aim of creating a uniform Pan-European system of inland navigation consisting of organizational structures that can meet present conditions.

Developing the Danube as an efficient and competitive waterway, in order to play its appropriate role within the framework of a sustainable European transport policy, development of passenger transport, inter alia, pleasure crafts, cabin vessels.

PERSPECTIVES OF DEVELOPMENT

Execution of the regular fairway maintenance work on the Danube.

Maintaning adequate fairway parameters (BC, AGN), while respecting the international obligation relating to the protection of environment.

Instalation of the necessary national and cross-border coordination procedures in order to implement effective response actions, in extraordinary circumstances (low water, ice, floods).

Re-establishing optimum and safe navigational conditions.

Continuous communication on the up-dated fairway situation. national administrations River Information Services providers waterway

users.

Sustainable dialogue platform between the waterway administrations, the Danube Commission and the relevant public and private stakeholders.

Strategic actions:

Implement the agreed TEN-T priority Danube waterway infrastructure projects (TEN-T Priority Project 18) on time and in an environmentally sustainable way.

Coordinate national transport policies in order to promote Danube navigation.

Develop Danube ports into multimodal logistics centres.

Improve the environmental performance of Danube navigation.

Invest in jobs and qualifications in the Danube navigation sector.

Improve comprehensive waterway management of the Danube.

Examine potential effects of climate change on Danube navigation.
