Participatory photography is an invitation.

For photographers, it invites them to look at the world through camera lens, and capture a feel-ing or a story. Armed with a single word and a camera, but equipped with limitless imagination, volunteers and local Khmer children were encouraged to examine both the world around them and the world inside their heads. With a click of the shutter, a nugget of thought was committed to film, or hidden thoughts inspired to crystallize. Each photo, and each story for each photo, is unique.

We’d like to invite you to participate as well, to look at the world through the eyes of the pho-tographers. Each photo will trigger certain feelings and first impressions - further reading of the accompanying description may give voice to your thoughts, or introduce you to a fresh perspec-tive. Photography means more than just photos, but encompasses the photographer’s story and your interpretation as well - a mirage of images and interpretations unified in one medium.

This is Participatory Photography - an exploration, understanding and appreciation of the individu-al, local and broader dialogues in which photographs are made meaningful. We hope our readers will catch a glimpse of daily life in rural Cambodia, and that the photography will pose questions to their existing beliefs and conceptions - just as our photographers used the photos as a tool of self-evaluation and expression.

Above all, we hope you enjoy the experience. Thank you for participating.

「社區參與攝影」(participatory photography) 是一張請柬。

它邀請攝影師用照相機的視角看世界,拍下一個故事、一刻的感觸。憑一部照相機、一個作為引導

的生字,我們鼓勵我們的義工和柬埔寨當地的小孩運用想像力,觀看、審視並連繫他們內心和外在

的世界。在按下快門的一刻,他們拍下屬於自己的柬埔寨的一隅,冀望這個靈感會被沖印、埋藏在

內心的想法得到共鳴。每一張照片、每一個留影,背後都有一個獨特的故事。

我們希望您參與其中,從攝影師的眼睛看他們的世界。每一張照片,都會勾起您一些想法、回憶或

個人情感;細讀照片旁邊的文字可能會為您帶來更多的感觸,或引領您從另一個角度從新審視同一

幅照片。照片,只是攝影的一部分。攝影,不但包含攝影師表達的故事,以及觀賞者對照片的詮

釋,還提供一個媒介將各樣的圖像和感覺共冶一爐。

In December 2008, James Mak sat down and wrote an email to his closest friends. It began with the words ‘I have a little dream’, and called upon them to bring this dream to reality - to build a school in Cambodia. Today, Project Little Dream (PLD) is a registered char-ity in Hong Kong, founded and run entirely by students, for students.

In the space of 2 years and 2 service trips, PLD recruited 91 volunteers to spend 49 days working and sweating under the Cambodian sun. There, they mixed cement and laid more than 4000 bricks for 7 toilet cubicles. They formed friendships with each other and the 54 children living in a local orphanage. In Decem-ber 2009, they built their first village school in Prey Run Village; in December 2011, they built their second in Kh’na Rong Village. By 2011, the number of students attending both village schools is projected to exceed 300.

The Story of Project Little Dream

二零零八年十二月,夢.行動發起人麥文熙向他的

好友發了一封題為「我有一個小小的夢」的電郵,

號召他們實現一個共同的夢想:在柬埔寨建校。今

天,夢.行動已是一個完全由學生營運、在香港註

冊的慈善團體。

在兩年之間,夢.行動為兩次旅程招募了91位義

工,在熾熱的柬埔寨陽光下工作了49天,用水泥和

4000塊磚頭建造了7個衛生間和2所農村學校。到

2011年,將會有超過300名學生在內上課。

New Futures Orphanage is run by NFO (New Futures Organisation), supervised by a British director and run entirely by Khmer (Cambodian) staff. The orphanage cares for more than 50 children, whose parents have either died or are unable to care for them. NFO reaches out to children beyond its scope, supporting schools in 15 neighbouring districts. Through a guesthouse run entirely by staff and students, not only have they become self-sustaining, they have also provided the children with skills for the future.

“A, B, C, D, E, F, G… I sing this when

I was small too.” singing along with

the kids, said Bunseng, the orphan-

age Director of NFO, as we were just

outside the classroom having our lunch

break. “I wanted to study English too,

but it was difficult. I was lazy”. Bun-

seng’s eyes filled with regret. But days

were difficult back then when Bunseng

was small. Being the oldest child in the

family means responsibility. It reminds

me of his story of finding food in the

jungle with his father, fear of stepping

on landmines.

Bunseng helps us everyday with our

logistics and translation with the local

builders. Without him, I doubt anything

could’ve been built by us.

「A, B, C, D, E, F, G…」在孩童們的琅琅

誦書聲中,Bunseng憶述起他的過往—和

父親涉險到林中覓食、對上學的憧憬、以

及住在難民營的艱難情景。而現在他把希

望寄托在照片中身後的220名孩子身上。當

The Cambodian lady looked at her son

with all the motherly love the world

could offer while I, coming from France,

held him tight in my arms with a hope

that one day he would help this country.

I was overwhelmed by a weird yet

comforting feeling when our eyes were

fixed on the local Khmer toddler. The

moment froze as our backgrounds were

reduced into a primal love.

我懷中尚在牙牙學語的小兒也許絲毫察

覺不到抱著他的,這位從法國遠道而來的

人,心中多盼望他長大後能夠造福他人。

但是他肯定能夠感受到她母親慈愛的眼神

中所蘊含的深沉母愛。父母親對兒子的

愛,一代人對下一代人的期望,兩者加起

來,就是最原始的愛的傳承。

Giver or receiver? Can you tell?

This is a group photo of volunteers and

children, and some may think it is a pho-

to of giver and receivers respectively.

But, for the volunteers, they think of

themselves as the receivers and the

children as givers. After hearing the

children’s stories and sharings, the

volunteers have learnt a lot. Everyone

has something to give and something

to receive.

義工們和小孩們的合照對某些人來說,可

能是一般的贈與者和受惠者的留影。但是

在義工們的心中,那些小孩才是給予者。

小孩們和義工們分享了各自的故事,大大

開闊了他們的眼界。其實,每個人都能

During this trip, we did a lot of hard

work, sweating under the sun. In a way

it was like a journey, and at the end

of the path was the completion of the

school.

It was also a journey to find my identity.

Through the challenges and my ‘sweat

and tears’, I found satisfaction and en-

joyment in my work. I learnt more about

myself, and about my identity.

這次的行程充滿了烈日和勞動。可以說,

這次的行程就像一次長征,而征途的終點

就是最後落成的學校。同時,它也是我尋

找自我的一個旅程。無數的挑戰、不少的

汗水、淚水都過去後,我還是十分享受這

次旅程,並且十分滿足。我找到了自己,

找到了自己人生的定位。

In the local market, different shops

sells different colors of the t-shirt with

one same message—“same same but

different”.

We are all the same, we are all just

human, why do we have to create

borders and confinements to make

ourselves different? In Cambodia, under

one common sky, with one common

dream, despite different skin colors and

backgrounds, we are all the same.

市集內,林林總總的攤檔都在兜售同一款

A statue guards the entrance of the

national museum. In cambodia, religion

is often used as a tool in politics to

manipulate elections. Does the statue

show only people’s fears to evil spirits?

Or the society’s fear to old traditions

and changes?

政客常以宗教信仰為選舉工具,支配選舉結

“It’s coming! It’s coming!” As the truck

comes closer and closer, in 30 second

of stressful anticipation, we could only

stare at it helplessly. Finally, the truck

passed our “tuk tuk” and we were left

in a cloud of yellow sand. Everyday, this

happens again and again on our way to

the work site.

We know it is coming, we know what

will happen —it is anticipated, yet,

unstoppable. The only thing we could do

is to hold on, believing that we would

live through it, and then move on.

「轟隆!轟隆!」迎面而來的貨車帶著

無情的黃沙直奔我們的「tuk tuk(小機

車)」。日復一日,在我們出發到工地的

路上,這貨車黃沙從不爽約。停不下,擋

不了,最終還是一臉灰塵。我們能做的,

就只有眼睜睜的等待黃沙捲來,堅信、屹

立,然後挺過去,繼續上路。

I think talking to a stranger was one

of the greatest ‘fear’ of all when I was

small. I took this photo because this

reminded me of how I used to fear

making English conversations with

foreigners. But I admire her courage.

She doesn’t know a lot of English, but

she tries nevertheless. “What is your

name?” she asked. I said, “My name

is Jac, and yours?”. She shook her

head. But with a smile, she asked again

“Where are you from?”

小時候,我很害怕跟陌生人說活。我拍下

這幅照片,是因為它勾起我從前懼怕跟外

國人用英語溝通的片段。我極佩服這個女

孩的勇氣。她不諳英語,卻不放棄每個學

習機會。「您叫甚麼名字?」她問道。

「我叫Jac,你呢?」她搖頭,然後繼續

It was almost sunset as we were

cycling around Takeo town. Sot, our

Khmer friend, pointed at this French

colonial building and said “people steal

goes in there. You call Jail?”. Peeping

through the barred opening, it was

utter darkness. “Don’t go near” said

Sot, pointing at the watch tower. I can’t

imagine what it’s like to be in a prison,

not to mention here in Takeo, and I

suppose no one would dare coming this

close during the Khmer Rouge some 30

years ago. It was different from what I

saw in the widely known museum S21

in Phnom Penh. This building perhaps

doesn’t carry as much historical signifi-

cance. But the idea that it’s a function-

ing and possibly a century-old building

haunts me.

Takeo的落日之下,騎著自行車的我們凝

視著身邊那牆身已經褪色的古舊法式建

築。Sot,一個當地人,告訴我們這是一座

監獄。「你偷了東西,你得進去。」這裡

不及S21恐怖,也不如S21般富歷史價值,

裡面一下子就亮了起來,還傳出了擺置飯

我的夥伴。我只能默默向前走,信任他的

判斷。

Ants fear of being stepped on; we

human fear of insects that will fly on

us. But if we choose to, we can move

away. Or if we have no choice, we

should not fear.

螻蟻害怕被踐踏。我們會怕被飛蟲「偷

襲」。然而我們卻能選擇躲開,另覓地方

進食。或者,如果路只有一條,方法只有

一個,我們就不應該再懼怕(失敗)。

We called him the “fixing Child”

That day while I was mixing cement as

usual, my shoe laces were inexplicably

shortened. I was unable to wear my

shoes properly and was relieved when

I remember this was merely a pair of

old shoes that can be rid of my shoe

cupboard.

Then he came, with a straw of hay,

repaired my shoes in less than a

minute. His gazed at me with pride and

satisfaction.

I was guilty when I thought about how

the material-driven mindset in Hong

Kong had somehow robbed my sense

of appreciation. My shoes were not the

only thing fixed on that day.

我們叫他「修補小孩子」。

在我如常地拌和水泥漿的某天,我腳上的

鞋帶不知怎的短了一截。破了的鞋子穿不

了,但我想不要緊,這雙破爛東西也就不

過是我家的鞋柜裡可有可無的一員而已。

話猶在耳,拿著一根稻草的修補小孩子

向我走來,不消兩下功夫便修好了我的破

鞋。他看著我,眼神中泛著一點自豪,一

點滿足。

生於香港的物質環境的我慚愧了;富足的

生活讓我忘記了珍惜兩字有多重要。修補

小孩子那天修補了的,不只是小鞋子。

She was their pride, as simple as that.

They love her more every second. All

their hope lies in her future and well-

being.

In twenty years time when their faces

are wrinkled and their spirits seasoned

by old age, they would in turn be her

pride, for providing a warm home for

so many orphans throughout the years,

and to have loved her overwhelmingly

despite the many mistakes that she

has made.

她是他們倆的驕傲;僅此而已。他們對她

的愛隨時間流逝而更深。她的未來就是他

們所冀望的一切。

Every day when we were taking a

break, local Khmer children came rush-

ing over to take over the construction

site, offering all they have to help.

As primitive as it may seem, the

land lady’s house was a haven. Our

Khmer was far from fluent and so was

her English. But the landlady would

always invite us over to her house

with a smile and offer us tea and local

snacks with pride. Everything was

basic yet it filled our hearts with ac-

ceptance and warmth.

女房東的家看上去很簡陋,可它實在是

我們工餘時候的休息勝地。即使我們沒有

一口流利的柬埔寨話,即使女房東也沒有

一口漂亮的英語,我們還是會常常到她家

作客,她還是會笑著給我們端上熱茶和小

The whole school was filled with local

children dressed in all kinds of fashion.

Raggedly, some tattered and dirty, they

came to class as informal as it could be.

Standing out among the crowd was

the teacher, whose shirt was ironed

and cleaned daily. His hair was gelled

back and his leather shoes were almost

shinning despite the occasional sand

debris. His attitude is professional. He is

a professional.

“Do you like my school?” he asked

with a smile yet retaining his compo-

sure. From his eyes you can tell he is

a teacher with pride, as 156 students

awaits his next command.

學校裡的學生們穿著五花八門的校服。有

的骯骯髒髒,有的全起了皺,小孩們就是

不喜歡整齊的校服。與眾不同的老師穿著

一身洗得潔白、熨得筆直的恤衫。他頂著

一頭貼服的黑髮,踢著一雙即便在沙礫中

仍是一塵不染的皮鞋。他有著專業的教學

態度。他的確是個專業的教師。「你喜歡

這裡嗎?」他不卑不亢的笑著問道。他的

眼中閃爍著威嚴,使身後的156個小學生乖

乖的等待他的下一個指示。

One of the raw ingredients used for

making cement is concrete. Concrete

comes in the form of loose, grey

powder, packed into bags and loaded

onto vans.

At first sight, it looks like nothing

extraordinary, almost like dust.

However, once mixed with sand and

water, cement is transformed into

something much stronger—concrete.

Once concrete sets, it becomes a solid

material that holds up buildings and

forms foundations.

In the beginning, “I am not” strong. But

after meeting and mixing with different

people and elements in life, I can

become stronger.

混凝土的其中一樣原材料是水泥。水泥

原本只是小貨車裡一袋又一袋的鬆散的灰

粉。驟眼望去,它最是平凡不過,和灰塵

沒兩樣。然而,它一旦遇上砂和水,便搖

身一變成為堅硬的混凝土。混凝土凝固、

A toddler toying with sand - A common

sight to behold in any context. That was

before he suddenly drew a saw from

behind and waving it almost with skill.

Our perceptions are superficial and are

most often clouded by bias. Only with

time can we penetrate the outer layer

and gain a better truth of reality.

I was told that it is a tradition to put

a scarecrow at the entrance of your

house. It would scare evil spirits away

from the family, preventing diseases

and sends away bad luck. I suppose

this serves a similar purpose in a

modernizing age for Prey Run Village.

Fear is such a superstitious notion. We

tend to place scary faces to scare away

things that we are afraid of. I suppose

this graffiti is a symbol of weakness

than strength.

有人說,當地人有一種習俗,會在家門前

紮一個稻草人。稻草人可以把邪靈嚇跑,

保家中的人健康平安,大吉大利。照片裡

柱子上的圖像也許是現代化後的Prey Run

村的稻草人。恐懼往往是迷信之源;人們

不時創造一些凶神惡煞來趕走自己心中最

怕的妖魔鬼怪。我想,柱子上的畫象徵的

Through screaming, laughing, running

and kicking, I learnt something. One of

the precious things in life lies in the in-

teraction between people, the relation-

ship we have with one another. Friend-

ships are not built on competitions with

one another, but rather the sharing of

skills and experience. Building relation-

ships is about passion, not skills.

叫著,笑著,跑著,踢著,又有所悟。

Handshakes are the best way to

break barriers of culture. This friendly

gesture bridges the gap between

culture and language between me and

the child. The strength to change the

community of Cambodia lies not only

in my hands, but also in the hands of

little children in Cambodia. As we come

together, change becomes tangible and

reachable.

Wearing a smile while wearing a shirt

with an underlying meaning as such

is very ironic and disheartening to say

the least. When I saw this little girl at

Preyrun Primary School, I felt extremely

uneasy and yet could not take my eyes

off her. This shirts seems to be scream-

ing right at me the unjust and unfair-

ness of society and how it is affecting

these innocent little girls.

This photo is taken by a little girl, Danel,

who lives in Preyrun Village. Our visit

not only allows cultural exchange be-

tween the volunteers and the primary

school students, but also displays an

extensive use of technology and

expensive equipments such iphones or

DSLRs. It is certainly unjust to deprive

this little children the use of such tech-

nology. But such display of technology

without showing them the responsible

way of using it may do more harm than

good to their society. Are we improv-

ing their knowledge and living standard

or are we enforcing our cultures and

values into their society?

Fairness has no definition, it is not lim-

ited to human beings alone. Here, flies

are swarming towards the fluorescent

light - and rushing towards their death,

as they will be burnt by the heat. Is this

fair? The flies have no choice about the

matter, the only thing they can do is fly

blindly ahead. In life and in death, the

only thing we can do is give it our best

shot, be it flies or humans.

Waiting is painful.

To the prisoners, these numbers might

On my way back to Takeo, our ‘Tuk-tuk’

stopped to give way to the group of

cattles that are on their way home. The

different sizes of the cows resemble

different stages in life. This is my

second winter trip to Cambodia and

Prey Run Village. As time goes by, my

feeling for this place changes. I become

more attached to this loving community

and am more eager to come back in the

future. As I grow older, my perspective

in life and in this community may

change again and time will tell and be

the best witness of it.

回茶膠鎮的途中,我們的「tuk tuk(小機

車)」停下了,讓這群牛大爺先走。這群

牛中有老有嫩,集齊了生命的各個階段。

這是我到柬埔寨Prey Run度過的第二次冬

天。我是越來越喜愛這個充滿溫情的地方

了。我不知道我對這裡的感情會不會一變

Time is always the best witness of

growth. During the short two-week

period in Cambodia, I became very

familiar with mud, cement and water.

From the beginning when everything,

even the making of cement seems to

be difficult, I feared that I might not be a

good input into this program. However,

day by day, little wonders work their

ways inside me. Through sweat and

handwork, I learn how to turn powders

of cement into walls that provide

shelters and protection. The sense of

satisfaction is overwhelming.

時間從來都是成長的最佳見證。在柬埔寨

短短兩個星期,我已經能非常熟練的拌合

水泥了。剛到這兒時,不懂得如何弄好水

泥令我頗為氣餒。不過,日子有功,熟能

生巧,我慢慢地掌握到如何將沙泥、三合

土和汗水化為給別人遮風擋雨的好地方。

這份成就感是不能言喻的。

On the very last day of school

construction in Kh’na Rong Village, we

finally put up the installation at the roof

of the school. Memories of individuals

and volunteers drawing, painting and

writing the plague cards kept flooding

back into my head. Looking from afar,

these little plaque cards are no different

from each other. But as I look closer,

I can see encouraging quote in one

card, a drawing of sunrise in another.

Sometimes, it is through bits and

pieces of handwork that make an event

successful. This installation is not just

a water droplet, it is the essence and

dreamweaver of different messages of

different people who sincerely wish a

better future in Cambodia.

在建校的最後一天,學校的屋頂終於給蓋

上去了。義工們在一堆小木牌上畫畫、塗

色、留字的畫面,不住的浮上我的心頭。

遙遙望去,一塊一塊的小木牌完全是一式

一樣的。可細看之下,這一塊寫著勉勵的

祝福,那一塊畫著絢麗的日出,後面的一

塊又……它們各有千秋,是整個建校計劃

的點睛之筆,是不同的人不同的夢交織融

合而成的、對柬埔寨最真誠的祝福。

People leave footprints on the sand

and these footprints in Cambodia are

especially special, since they may be

ours and or the children’s. These foot-

prints show the crisscrossing of lives in

Cambodia not just physically, but also

mentally through interactions during

action games. It also shows the collec-

tive experience in the sites and how

the handwork of everyone is equally

important in making dreams come true.

Whether the footprints on the sand are

replaced or washed away, the experi-

ence will leave footprints our hearts.

這片沙地上的足印特別的特別。它們縱

橫交錯,你的我的也分不清楚,總之是我

們和小孩們命運的腳步重疊而成的夢的軌

Reflections are like dreams to me. They

are untouchable and beautiful. They are

powerful and magical. Reflections and

dreams allow us not to be satisfied by

current circumstances and provide us

with the driving force to strive for a bet-

ter future. Chasing for my own dream is

like looking at the reflection of the pond

in this photo. Though it is beautified and

intangible, but nonetheless, it’s calming

and soothing to the soul.

Which hand is my hand? In the midst of

the Khmer children’s hands, I cannot tell

which one is mine.

After days of working in the sun, my

hand was tanned, and was virtually

indistinguishable from the Khmer skin

colour. At that moment, I felt closer

to the children. Our hands are ‘same

same’, we are not so ‘different’ after all.

哪隻才是我的手?在一眾小孩的手裡,我

已經分不清楚哪隻是我的。烈日下工作多

天,我的膚色和當地人的膚色基本上已不

可分辨。而那一刻我發現,我和這群小孩

之間的分別是多麼的微小。我們畢竟有著

同一樣的手,差別從不曾大。

At first glance, these little children look

almost identical to me- their smiles,

their clothes and their innocence do

not differentiate themselves from one

another. As for us volunteers, I believe

we all behold the same dream for them:

a good education and a bright future.

Yet, despite the seemingly similar in-

teractions between the volunteers and

the children, each one of us impacts

the children differently, maybe it’s the

way we speak or the games we play or

the places we go…In the end, it’s how

much and what we give into the com-

munity that make the difference.

匆匆一瞥,他們無甚分別,一般的笑著,

一般的衣著,一般的天真無邪。我們也

無甚分別,一般的期盼他們可以有良好

的教育,光輝的前程。我們做的可能也無

甚分別,一般的跟他們聊天,一般的跟他

們遊……但是我知道我們每個人都泛起了

不同的漣漪,讓這裡起了點兒不一樣的變

化。
