Education is the transmission of civilisation.- Will Durant

he close of the twelfth year of the millennium offers us an opportunity to look back, if only to look forward. Despite doubts about our economy's ability to riseTabovethe tide ofadversities, with strongfundamentalsanda resilientmindset, wehave movedcloser to thetake-off stageof economicgrowth. A programmeto capture the demographic dividend by shaping youth has been launched and has witnessed some gains in our crusade against poverty and illiteracy. Theregulatory apparatus for promoting education is being fine tuned and inclusive processes are being initiated to reach out to the youth willing to join themainstream formutual gains.

Consciousofourmissionandresponsibilities, we at METstrive to offerstate-of-the-art learningopportunities, to shape competentprofessionals in thespheres ofEngineering, Information Technology, Pharmacy, Business Management, Mass Media, Tourism, Hospitality etc. and have launched unique value-based

schooling, to strengthen the foundation, reflecting a confluence between Indian and western education systems. Our vision is to offer sharp professionals to thesociety, througha synergistic combination of technologyandtradition.

We are conscious that education is the nectar of the civilisation that we have inherited from our thinkers. It is our duty to mould and deliver it, enriched andempoweredby state-of-the-art technology, to meetthe challenges of society. In this task,we believe - Education isnotpreparation forlife; educationis life itself. Professional Management Education programmes (known as PGDM) to provide professionals to meet needs of IndianIndustry were initiated in the 1960s at Indian Institutes of Management and later by other Universities. PGDM (e-Business)draws its strengthandcharacter fromthis iconic lineage.

With the development of e-empowered business solutions, tools and databases, the professional manager has since beengreatly empowered to provide direction and dynamism to industry. Therefore it is critical that e-business is integrated not

merelyas an optionto decision-making, butas themedium and linguafranca of theworldof business. In order to appreciatebusiness realities and nuances the world over, it is critical that these inputs are delivered to the aspiring managers at the righttimeso as to enrich theirdecision-makingcapacity.

This is precisely the purpose of the PGDM (e-Business) programme. It is true that a plethora of softwares and languages aredelivered at the doorstep of industry, but one needs to identify the critical inputs and train the professionals to use themdecisively withsuccess.

Details of PGDM (e-Business) programme spread over four semesters are enclosed. All critical inputs in core areas ofmanagement aredeliveredusing interactive platformsand methods likecasestudies, outboundtraining, roleplayworkshopsand seminars by industry experts, alumni, factory visits, etc. this is further strengthened by eight weeks of summer internshipandindustrythreshold programme in the fourth semesterwherein studentswork to prepare a livebusinessmodel andindustryproject.

We have the necessary infrastructure the hardware and the software with highly skilled experienced and motivated faculty ready to develop students intoprofessional who can meet the challenges of the globalised e-empowered economy. Since there is an already developed placement platform with the industrythe learningsbeing imparted to studentshavebeen sharpened to meetindustryrequirementson anongoingbasis.

Thus,in the foursemestersthe PGDM(e-Business)programme will shape thestudentsmeet thechallenges of thecorporateworld bydeveloping theircapabilitiesto face thecomplexities of business worldwide. We hope thestudentswill enjoy theexperience and attaintheirchosen place in industry. Thecontent and deliveryof the learning programme seeks to achieve synergy between Industry and Academic challenges. The evaluation of students would be on the lines of AICTEnorms followedby leadingB schools in thecountry.

    THE INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE

Even in these daunting times, one person witha good idea can still change the world

    Adam Cohen, International Herald Tribune

'Great Expectations' - Business Challenges andthe Innovation Imperative

As we scan the national and global 'good' to 'great' Corporate Houses, we learn that whether it is the top hundred or five hundred, young, modern and dynamicbusiness organisations continue to edge outthe past heavyweights.Just as Microsoftclimbed past IBM, Facebook, Google and Apple appear to be in sustainedpursuit of the leading position. Nearer home, even when an IT giant notches 25% plus annual growth in revenues and profits, there is negativity in themarketplace, which is probably expecting a much higher performance. As the 'Incredible India' story now enters the second phase of challenging economic

reforms, there appears to be a lot of jostling and rubbing of shoulders amongst young dynamic Corporate Houses to climb atop the winner's podium. Theirsuccess is marked by evolutionandsustenance of 'innovation platforms', which unleash the synergistic combination of youngand dynamic professionals, alwaysresponding to thechallenges of themarketplace.

Undoubtedly, one wonders, how feasible it is for an organisation to maintain a steady supply of such game-changers? How does one source such talent ataffordable costs and continue to sow and reap the innovation dividend from these change agents? Does the 'process' take precedence over the 'product', whilethe people-performance-pipeline floods the consumer space, resulting at times in legal battles, to seek the final verdict on the 'smart instruments'? Closer to ourscenario, the dusty roads of rural India arebeingcriss-crossed andserved by e-empowered logistic chains, thus narrowingthe digital divide. Don't be surprised, when you learn that the three packs of branded tea/coffee, that you bought, were digitally recorded, via the remote sensing hub of the supplier/manufacturer.Next time,as youstepout,to reachthe next outlet, inalllikelihood youare digitallytrackedfor thenextpurchase remember 'Youare beingserved!' digitally!

Here, one must remember that our youth, especially those who are exposed to the world of business dynamics, through a business administration programme, would ideally be the closest to approach and leap across the innovation barrier. Whether it is the challenging metros or unexplored rural habitats, their tryst withmanagement education lends them a great degreeof comfort in relating to thecomplex world of business. As they seek knowledge, through academic exposureand the web world, they have to cross umpteen barriers and knowledge blocks, to seek their space in the marketplace. In fact, their epic struggle, to matchbusiness tools with reality, prepares them for the larger-than-life battles in the markets. Given opportunity and encouragement, they deliver performance, tomatch industrystandards.

    THE INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE

We, at theMET Schools of Management, continuously reshape andretool thedeliverymodules and thepedagogy, in order to shape theyoungprofessionals, totakeon thechallenges of themarketplace. Intense learningmodules, supplementedbybusiness simulations, roleplays, casestudies andinteractiveparticipatorylearning processes, delivered in partnership with the industry, help them realise the importance of experiential learning. Industrial visits, interactive trainingsessions, with socio-political players, help them understand the contextual nature of business. A programme of working with NGOs, striving towards upliftingtribals in the Waliv/Vasai region, helps them understand the wide gap that exists between the haves and the have nots. The MET Seva programme, under theUNECOSOCspecialconsultative status receivedby MET, helps themunderstand their roles andresponsibilities,in buildingan inclusivesociety.

Thus, our industry-academia exchange aggregating over 600 corporate houses is designed to give students an opportunity to fathom the depth of the world ofbusiness. Guided by caring faculty and corporate shapers, our illustrious alumni are spread across the globe, from the scenic outpost of New Zealand, themajestictowers ofDubai, encompassingEurope and America, notto mention thefreezingsnowsof theRussianwinter in thesuburb ofMoscow. In India, theyareseen maximising customer delight in skin care or arranging fruits and vegetables, exhibiting the freshness to the customer as also being actively engaged inincreasing theTRP formediagroups as also mastering algorithmic trading,to tame the'spirits' at thebourses.Theydonthe professionalmantle as entrepreneursor intrapreneurs, dishing out fine cut diamonds forever and can also be seen churning out packaged fruits, to challenge the consumers' palette. Through theirendeavours, they help us reach out to the strategic wonderland of global businesses, reassuring their comrades at home about the relevance of businessmanagement education.

With all humility, we hold the belief that despite limitations in the knowledge and competency areas, through their dedication, perseverance and commitment tobuild an inclusive society, our students would excel in meeting corporate performance levels. Undoubtedly, all that they seek is an opportunity, to board thecorporate 'innovation' platform. And, given the space-faith-time continuum, they will rise to match the 'GREAT EXPECTATIONS' of the marketplace, thusembodyingthephilosophyofPeter Drucker:The best wayto predict thefuture is tocreateit.
