It’s a tall order! In the opening keynote, acclaimed international fundraising trainer, leadership coach and author Marc A. Pitman will share national trends and regional applications that will help your organization to progress. Learn how to change and still fund your mission without turning off existing donors as you take strategic steps that attract and connect you to new support. Youth Session Two: Raising a Philanthropist/Next Generation Those of us who are operating in the world of philanthropy are often asked: How do I teach my children to become philanthropic? And how old do they have to be to start? The answer is simple: You can start with children as soon as they begin to connect with the world around them. This panel will share their stories and provide tips and support on how to develop the frame of mind to give and volunteer to those in need.Moderated by: Lisa McNeill, President of Cape Cod VolunteersPanelists: Philanthropist/Volunteer Maggie Van Sciver and her daughter Hannah; Kerry Bickford, Extension Educator at the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension and Operation Military Kids, and her granddaughter Kaileigh, recipient of the JFK Presidential Library’s Make A Difference Award™

The Changing Faces of Membership If you have a member-driven organization or you are thinking about moving in that direction, cultivating and stewarding a growing and ever-changing membership is absolutely essential for your fundraising program. Hear from four knowledgeable professionals on how they cultivate healthy relationships with their members, transition first-time donors to longtime members and attract new members to their organizations.Moderator: Jeffry George, Executive Director, Wellfleet Harbor Actors TheaterPanelists: Robert F. Dwyer, President & Executive Director, Cape Cod Museum of Natural History; Laura Curry, Information Services Director, Association to Preserve Cape Cod; Jennifer Kent, Director of Development, Heritage Museums and Gardens

The Marriage of Marketing & FundraisingPeople will not invest in what they don’t know or understand. It is the job of nonprofits to educate their constituents on the need for their services or product, whether for the here and now or for the future. Progressive and innovative marketing goes hand in hand in leading prospective donors and volunteers down the path to engagement and investment in your organization or cause. Attendees in this session will explore effective marketing and branding strategies that successfully connect and resonate with donors. Session attendees are encouraged to bring marketing collateral examples for group discussion.Speaker: Clare Healy Foley, Director of Development & External Affairs, Community Nurse & Hospice Care

Succession Planning for your Board and CEO The sheer nature of change can be chaotic. We have all seen it in our organizations when leadership has transitioned without a plan. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Change can and should be strategic, calculated and seamless. In this session you will learn about best practices in succession planning including analysis, candidate development and transitioning and onboarding—all with a proactive approach. Bring succession planning out from the shadows and on to your organization’s pathway to growth. Hear case studies of what has worked well and what has not. Panelists: Charley Polachi, Board Member, Nantucket Dreamland Foundation; Kevin Howard, President & CEO, Arts Foundation of Cape Cod; Barbara Milligan, President & CEO, Cape & Islands United Way; Dick Rand, Board Member, Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation

10:30 – 11:45 am

The Ins and Outs of Planned Giving in a Small Shop Have you thought about starting a planned giving program, but don’t know where to start? Or do you have a program on paper, but you aren’t having the discussions you need to initiate with your donors to promote the concept? Not sure what to do next to execute with success? These are common scenarios for nonprofits with a small staff juggling many hats.

In this session, take a pause—and a deep breath—and learn how to make a planned giving program real and measured for your organization. Understand how to leverage outside help and counsel to understand the ins and outs of planned gifts and what gift vehicles are easier to accept and manage, especially in a small shop. Real-life examples will be shared—from good to bad, to seamless and problematic. In the end, education is the name of the game—for you, your staff and your longtime donors who want to have a lasting impact and legacy. You just haven’t made them realize it yet.Speakers: Christopher J. Ward, Partner, Trusts and Estates, La Tanzi, Spaulding & Landreth, P.C.; PJ Richardson, Chief Financial Development Officer, YMCA Cape Cod

2:00 – 3:15 pm

Donor Retention: Current Rates are Plummeting! What Every Fundraiser Can Do to Reverse the Trend! This session explores the latest Fundraising Effectiveness Project report commissioned by AFP and the Urban Project. The dismal news in this report can and should be an eye opener for every nonprofit engaged in fundraising. Learn what can be done about retaining your donors and building donor loyalty based on the principles of Dr. Adrian Sargeant, a world renowned authority on building donor retention and donor loyalty. Dr. Sargeant’s principles are based upon years of research and can be used by any organization whether it has a one-person shop or a large development department. Walk away with examples of Dr. Sargeant’s principles in action using various technology tools. The results can be astounding when put into daily use. Careers in Development We so often hear how many of us “fall” into development. “Planning Your Development Career” will provide insight from a fundraising professional and search consultant on how to have a career with intention. Discussion points include: what skills and qualities are most sought after, do you need CFRE certification or an MBA, how to work most effectively with a search firm, some do’s and don’ts of job hunting, differences between jobs in the arts, healthcare, human service or education, and how one should present his or her skills and credentials to prospective employers.

Even if you are happily employed, hear first-hand advice from an experienced fundraising professional on which qualities and skills organizations value in their staff, how to apply these toward your own experience, and what steps to take towards a development career with purpose.Speaker: Tracy Marshall, Vice President of Executive Search Services, Development Guild/DDI

2:00 – 3:15 pm

Nonprofit Storytelling in a Digital WorldStorytelling is a powerful marketing strategy and an effective way to engage audiences on social media platforms. So why are most nonprofits so bad at storytelling? For-profit brands and businesses are getting their stories out there – stories about their origins, their values, their customers, but nonprofits perhaps lack the time, expertise or believe they cannot afford the cost.

This interactive workshop will detail key steps nonprofits can take to craft compelling stories using cost-effective digital tools like social media, blogs and no frills video. Participants will learn why storytelling is so vital to a successful nonprofit marketing and fundraising strategy, and how they can use their organization’s unique stories to grow support and connect with stakeholders and advocate on behalf of clients and causes.Speaker: Julia Campbell, J Campbell Social Marketing

2:00 – 3:15 pm

Navigating the Changing Tides in Grant WritingOver the past several years, changes within the external environment of the nonprofit sector have impacted resource development strategies for organizations. This session will focus on the resource allocation process of grant writing and will examine how the external shifts have altered this vital development activity. The session will provide information, ideas, and helpful hints on how to navigate these changes to promote promising requests for support. Speaker: Jodie Drapal Koretski, BS, MPA, ABD, Director, Massachusetts Certified Public Managers Program, Visiting Lecturer at Bridgewater State University, and Director of Development of Chorus of Westerly

The Beginner’s Guide to Building Donor Relationships The nature of philanthropic giving may be changing, but the fundamentals remain the same. It’s all about building relationships. Moves management is the process of managing those relationships in strategic ways, to the benefit of an organization and its donors. Regardless of an organization’s size, a thoughtful moves management plan often results in stronger relationships and greater giving. In this working roundtable session, you will learn about the five steps in moves management, and how to implement them by participating in group exercises and discussion. Facilitator: Jayne Iafrate, Interim Chief Development Officer, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

3:30 – 4:45 pm

The Fundraising Checkup: Smart Analysis for Fundraising Planning Too many fund development plans are created in a vacuum. In this workshop, you’ll be introduced to a holistic, organizational approach to analyzing your fund development program. You’ll learn when to conduct a fund development check-up; how to analyze the assets, opportunities, missing pieces and real threats to your fundraising through your fundraiser’s eyes; how to find benchmarking data; how to use interviews to support your observations and know what data is essential for planning purposes. Most importantly, you’ll learn how to use the check-up to shape your fund development program moving forward. Speaker: Gayle L. Gifford, ACFRE, Cause & Effect, Inc.

3:30 – 4:45 pm

Collaboration: Beyond the BuzzCollaboration is such a buzz word. In a community with over 700 nonprofits, the ability to work together to leverage resources and maximize impact is essential to attracting funding, staying competitive, and ensuring sustainability. Nonprofits know they should be doing it, and every funder wants them to, but do we all agree on what it means, and how to do it? This session will bring in perspective from funders on what collaboration means to them, and explore the audience members’ definitions of collaboration. A panel of three different successful collaborating partnerships/organizations will help to examine common questions and best practices toward affecting change, progress and greater connectivity. Moderator: Kristin O’Malley, Executive Director, The Cape Cod FoundationPanelists: QuARTet: Lauren Wolk, Associate Director, Cultural Center of Cape Cod andDavid Kuehn, Executive Director, Cotuit Center for the Arts; Cape Cod Fisheries Trust:Jay Coburn, Executive Director, Community Development Partnership and John Pappalardo, Executive Director, Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance; “Keep them Coming” Truancy Reduction Program: Carol Woodbury, Superintendent, Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District and Kathy Quatromoni, Director of Community Programs, Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office

Leverage free or inexpensive tools and increase your bottom line by learning:
