Sealing the JointsTo seal the joints spread a mix of sand(preferably with a grain size of 0.3) andPortland or Betonite cement (7% volume)over the paving and then, with the help ofa broom, use this mix to fill the joints.4. CompactionAfter laying the terracotta blocks and fil-ling the joints, it is then necessary to com-pact the surface. This operation consistsof passing repeatedly (at least twice) witha vibrator, as well as of aligning the sealedjoints. After compaction, the paving mustbe wet with a water sprinkler, taking carenot to "empty" the spaces which havepreviously been compacted. The pavingshould be left to dry for at least one day.

Posa con tecnica a malta1. Il letto di posaSul piano di posa (fondazione) stendereuno strato uniforme di malta cementiziacomposta da cemento 325 e sabbia siliceadi granulometria 0.3, in misura di 1,5 quin-tali di cemento per ogni metro cubo disabbia. Questo strato dovrà essere benlivellato e compattato.2. Posa dei masselli in cottoUltimata la preparazione del letto di posa,spolverare la superficie con del cementoin polvere e procedere alla posa dei mas-selli assicurandosi della presenza di fughedi 6/8 millimetri. In proposito suggeriamodi utilizzare gli appositi regoli distanziatori.Inoltre consigliamo di battere i masselliavendo cura di non alterare la planarità del

pavimento e le pendenze.3. Sigillatura delle fughePer la sigillatura delle fughe suggeriamo diutilizzare una malta cementizia compostada tre parti di cemento per ogni parte disabbia silicea di granulometria 0.3. Questadovrà essere colata all'interno delle fugheavendo cura di far sì che il prodotto riem-pia perfettamente le fughe senza sporcareeccessivamente la superficie dei masselli.4. Rimozione degli eccessi di maltaQualora si desiderasse togliere subito lapatina grigia lasciata dal cemento, checomunque tenderebbe a scomparire natu-ralmente con l'uso, si può procedere allavaggio del pavimento con una soluzioneacida composta da una parte di acido perogni 5 parti di acqua. Raccomandiamo dilasciare agire la soluzione per il tempostrettamente necessario a rimuovere letracce di cemento e comunque per nonpiù di qualche minuto, dopo di che sidovrà sciacquare il pavimento con acquaabbondante.

Posa con tecnica a semi-secco1. La formazione del letto di posaSul piano di posa si predisponga uno stra-to di 4 o 5 centimetri di sabbione con gra-nulometria 0.3/0.6.

Nel caso di pavimentazioni con pendenzemaggiori o uguali al 15% è opportuno uti-lizzare sabbia miscelata a secco concemento 325 (4% in volume).2. Posa dei masselli in cottoPosare i masselli accostandoli l’uno all’al-tro.3. Sigillatura delle fughePer la sigillatura delle fughe si cosparge ilpavimento di una miscela di sabbia prefe-ribilmente di granulometria 0.3 con un 7%in volume di cemento Portland o Betonitee con l'aiuto di una scopa si procede alriempimento degli interstizi.4. CompattazioneDopo aver posato gli elementi in laterizio eriempito le fughe, si procede alla compat-tazione. Questa operazione consiste nelpassaggio ripetuto (almeno due volte)della piastra vibrante, con rinfianco delriempimento delle fughe. Dopo la compat-tazione si bagnerà la pavimentazione conun getto d'acqua "a pioggia" facendoattenzione a non "svuotare" le fughe pre-cedentemente compattate. Il tutto dovràessere lasciato ad asciugare per almenoun giorno.

We advise leaving thesolution to act only for the time that isstrictly necessary to remove the cementtraces and in any case, for no longer thana few minutes, after which the pavingshould be rinsed thoroughly with plenty ofwater.

Semidry Laying1. Preparing the Laying BedThe laying bed must be covered with alayer of 4-5 cm of sand (grain size 0.3-0.6).In the event that the paving has an inclineof 15% or more, it is advisable to use a drymix of sand and 325 cement (4% volume).2. Laying the Terracotta BlocksLay the blocks by positioning them onealongside the other.

Décor range can be laid using either the"mortar" or "semidry" technique.More precisely, we recommend the follo-wing laying systems:• Regolino (3x6x27) = mortar• Sestino (6x6x27) = mortar / semidry• Mattoncino Small Brick (3x12x27) = mor-

tar / semidry• Small Block (6x6x6) = mortar

Laying with Mortar1. The Laying BedAn even layer of cement mortar, obtainedby mixing 1.5 quintals of 325 cement foreach cubic metre of silica sand (grain sizedistribution 0.3), must be spread over thelaying bed (foundation). This layer must bewell levelled and compacted.2. Laying the Terracotta BlocksOnce the foundation has been completed,sprinkle the surface with cement powderbefore proceeding to lay the blocks. Wesuggest that joints of 6-8 millimetres beleft between blocks and with regard tothis, that the proper distancing rules beused. We also recommend tamping theblocks, taking care not to alter the flatnessor in-cline of the paving.3. Sealing the JointsTo seal the joints we recommend the use

4. FinishingCotto Protetto by Pica also has numerousadvantages in the finishing stage.First of all, Cotto Protetto does not requirethe application of a waterproofing product,which means that finishing times aregreatly reduced. Secondly, the finishingstage has been greatly simplified and re-quires the application of a single product.Indoor FlooringWaxing consists of applying, in successivestages and only when the floor is perfectlydry, at least 2 coats of neutral liquid wax.Outdoor PavingTo finish the paving it is sufficient to applytwo coats of a water- and oil-repellent onlyto those areas exposed to the risk of acci-dental spillage of oily substances (barbe-cues, cooking areas, dining areas, etc.). Inthis case too, we recommend waiting untilthe paving is perfectly dry after washing.

• Cospargere la superficie di posa con unleggero strato di cemento in polvere.

• Posare le piastrelle sopra la superficiecosì ottenuta avendo cura di mantene-re il senso della trafila (il lato della pia-strella con taglio vivo dovrebbe corri-spondere sempre con lo stesso latodella piastrella attigua).

• Lasciare tra le piastrelle una fugalibera. La larghezza della fuga va con-cordata con la Direzione Lavori sullabase dei gusti del committente.Comunque è bene che sia compresatra i 3 e i 10 millimetri.

• Battere in maniera uniforme il pavimen-to, onde permettere una migliore ade-sione delle piastrelle con il letto di malta.

Posa a Colla• Assicurarsi che il piano di posa sia per-

fettamente livellato e, in caso di posaall'esterno, abbia le pendenze neces-saria a far defluire regolarmente leacque piovane (non meno dell'1%)

• Stendere un unico strato uniforme dicollante utilizzando l'apposita spatola.

• Posare le piastrelle prima che il col-lante, a contatto con l'aria, filmisuperficialmente.

Seguono poi le stesse indicazioni per laposa a malta.

2. Sigillatura delle fugheCon questa operazione si vanno a colmarele fughe lasciate libere fra piastrella e pia-strella. Attenzione, non sigillare i giunti didilatazione se non con gli appositi profili.Per il riempimento delle fughe si può uti-lizzare sia una biacca di sabbia e cemento,sia un sigillante sintetico preconfezionato(sono sconsigliate le colorazioni troppomarcate quali il nero o antracite).• Utilizzando una spatola gommata sten-

dere la soluzione sul pavimento aven-do cura di comprimerla all'internodelle fughe.

• Ultimata la fase di riempimento dellefughe, a fughe leggermente indurite,passare con una spugna umida rimo-vendo gli eccessi di soluzione e stilan-do singolarmente le fughe.

3. LavaggioRaccomandiamo di eseguire il lavaggio apavimento perfettamente asciutto e diseguire scrupolosamente le indicazioniformulate di seguito:• Lavare il pavimento con una soluzione

composta da una parte di acido clori-drico per ogni 6 parti di acqua.

• Lasciare la soluzione sulla superficiedel pavimento il tempo strettamente

2. Sealing the JointsThis operation is carried out to seal thejoints left between tiles. Caution: Takecare not to fill the expansion joints, if notwith a suitable profile. Either a mix of sandand cement or a ready-made syntheticseal can be used for joint sealing (overlymarked colours such as black or anthraci-te are not recommended).• Using a suitable rubber trowel, spread

this mix taking care to push it downwell between the joints.

• When the joints have been filled, wipeover them with a damp sponge toremove any residues and to shape thejoints individually.

3. WashingWe recommend that washing be carriedout only when the floor is perfectly dryand that the following instructions be fol-lowed scrupulously:• Wash the floor with a solution made of

one part hydrochloric acid to 6 partswater.

• Leave the solution to act on the surfaceof the floor only for the time that isstrictly necessary to remove the mor-tar residues on the tile surfaces.

• Once the acid solution has takeneffect, rinse the flooring thoroughlywith plenty of water and quickly re-move the residues.

1. Laying the TilesCotto Protetto can be laid using the “mor-tar” or “adhesive” techniques.Laying with Mortar• Spread an even layer of mortar, no less

• Sprinkle the laying surface with a thinlayer of cement powder.

• Leave a space between tiles. The widthof this space is to be agreed in con-junction with the Site Supervisor andaccording to the tastes of the end user.In any case, spaces should be between3 and 10 mm.

• Tamp the floor evenly to ensure bettertile adherence to the mortar bed.

Laying with Adhesive• Ensure that the laying bed has been

levelled perfectly and, when laying out-doors, that it has the necessary inclineto permit the run-off of rainwater (noless than 1%).

• Using a suitable trowel, spread an evenlayer of adhesive over the surface.

• Lay the tiles before the adhesivebegins to form a surface film upon con-tact with the air. The remainingprocedures are the sameas for laying the tileswith mortar.
