The Flying Pig Marathon, Taking Root, & Xavier University’s  Collaborative Partnership

…Planting for the future!

Taking Root is a grassroots organization originally convened by the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, The Green Umbrella, The Green Partnership of Greater Cincinnati, and OKI, Regional Council of Governments, and now consisting of many other partners. Its goal of planting one tree per person (two million) in the Tri-state by 2020, and more trees beyond, is designed to draw attention  to  our  region’s  tree  canopy  crisis  due  to  emerald  ash  borer  and  other  causes  and  to  remind the community of the many benefits of trees.

Xavier University and The Flying  Pig  Marathon’s  sustainability pioneer Denise Hovey celebrate their partnership with Taking Root appropriately, with a ceremonial tree planting in Friendship Park, March 25th,  2015.  Xavier’s  own  students are present, as officials from both Taking Root and The Flying Pig Marathon congregate to celebrate a milestone  partnership…

…The  ceremonial  planting  marks  the  beginning  of  a lasting partnership with plans for continued growth; for the largest ever tree planting on national “Make  a  Difference”  day  (October 25th, 2015), more uniting partnerships between such compatible organizations, and “26  Trees  for  26  Miles”,    a program involving the planting of at least 26 trees each year through coordination with 17 different local Cincinnati neighborhood.
