ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

ANA AMELIA BATLLE

I am Ana Amelia Batlle. My major is Architecture and my minors are Busi-ness and Electronic Design. My expected graduation date is on spring of 2018 from the Savannah College of Art & Design, SCAD. My most influential SCAD Project was a Light Museum I created in the studio Fundamentals I. I experienced the true essence of designing spaces that aimed to allure the five senses. As I progressed with my proposal, I studied the behavior of light and how it impacted and involved my audience. The struggles and victories I encountered helped define what I consider to be the talents I represent. I now believe that one of my best talents is creativity, since I have developed an ease of bringing to life my concepts and ideas.

One of my hobbies is sketching, through it I can grasp, understand, in-terpret and reflect my personal view and interpretation of my environ-ment. This exercise has become an intrinsic part of my development as an

architect because now I have a sensibility for the natural world.

I see myself in ten years going back home, the Dominican Republic, and developing a sustainable city that does not harm nor pose a threat to the world we live in. I want to teach how as a community, making minimal changes to our way of living we can and will create a positive impact, from designing passive architecture to using new technologies. I see my-self creating a Firm that will change the architecture model in the Do-minican Republic and hopefully inspire the rest of the world to create rational and intelligent technologies that enhances our way of living.

LIGHT MUSEUMMy design is based on the experimentation of darkness and light. As people enter the building they experience a change in light and shadows all throughout the building, creating uncommon and interesting spaces, each floor portrays a different phase of light. The structure of the

building is exposed, portraying a blend of de-constructivism and cubism. This combination of in-terlocking cubes, when seen as a whole the struc-ture creates a puzzling pattern symbolizing the deconstruction of a box, a “Light Box”, result-ing in a contrasting experience for the viewers.

ProcessThe objective of this exercise is to introduce the degrees of enclosure of architectural space, exploring both “open” and “closed” spaces. This system has a regulating geometry that allows extension and growth into a pattern of spaces. After experimentation, I was able to select my main footprint, which I later reflected and rotated to create the base for my project, with the main purpose of creating a path with a spa-tial sequence that is proportionally related to its plan and section.

Through the study of sound waves in elements within nature, such as; trees, water & wind, I seek to change the psychological experience perceived by the individuals exposed to my design.

The title contrary collision (C.C.) seeks to emphasize the design concept of contrary intersections amidst the alive and the dead. This being represented by the shape of the design, two geometric forms intersecting in a single area. From this collision nature emerges creating harmony between human habi-tation and nature, at the same time representing the battleground between the natural and the unnatural.

Before establishing the final form, I ex-plored different shapes and functions through the three models seen above, using the site and designing accordingly to it. The third one is the design presented on midterms of the course, Fundamentals II, but after mid-terms the project took a different direction, clearly seen on the final model. The midterm project is presented as a different house on the following pages, titled as “Carvalhos”.

Carvalhos is a two story house located in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This project takes place on the exact site as the previous project, “C.C. II”, because Carvalhos represents one of the many directions I encoun-tered while doing the course. This is the model designed by midterms, the final design as seen previously is dissimilar to this one. The intention is to provide significant views and open spaces to the residents all throughout the building. Each section of the house was designed with private courtyards and gardens, which passively cool and illuminate the rooms. With a sunken courtyard, a terrace on the second floor and two outdoors sections of bathrooms, the residents can experience different environments across the house.

Utopia; a philosophy for highly desirable or ideal conditions. For me this “heaven” can be reached through self-sustainability; Independence. Us-ing the quarry, I will detach the Lacoste vil-lage from the neighboring villages, by designing a greenhouse for crop cultivation, capable of gen-erating the energy and water it needs while leav-ing no ecological foot print. Through my proposal the villagers will not relay on adjacent communi-ties to acquire food, I have combined food agricul-ture with public spaces. The progressive develop-ment and flourish of a network was inspired by the structure of the cellular qualities within nature,

all with sustainability as the common denominator. “Utopia can happen if you ask not what Humani-ty can do for you, but what you can do for Human-ity.” -Jon Will. Hortus Iunctios is a model for an environmental cultivation of all season vegetables in the Lacoste quarry. This model is intended to promote a network of supportable utopia throughout the Luberon. This self-sustainable ecological hydrau-lic system uses zero energy through rain water col-lection, ram pumps and solar generators. I have combined the cultivation of the nutrients with pub-lic spaces, located in specific places according-ly to the sun light that the plants must obtain.

The site is a quarry, located in Lacoste, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur re-gion in the south of France. The weather in Lacoste goes up to 30 °C during the summer and in winter goes as low as 4 °C. Every month five to fifteen days of rain are expected with precipitations of 40mm to 82 mm. Using the rain fall, the vegetables planted in the green houses are nourished. The water is recol-lected at the top level of the quarry, from where it falls to level 1, creating pressure to generate energy for the center. This energy is recollected though a hydraulic system that transform the kinetic energy to power. To prevent the pods from heating up photovoltaic layers protect the glass walls, creating a controllable environment within each pod. The water is pumped up through a ram pump and hydraulic elevators function with the pressure of the water fall cre-ated by the topography of the site.
