Chitramala : res idence for an art ist

I

A

ProJECt tYPE : Residential

StUDio : Studio 3, Semester 6

DAtE : July, 2015

loCAtioN : Ahmedabad, India

Project is to design a res idence for a specif ic person. I designed a res idence for an art ist Raja Ravi Verma in a colonial per iod bungalow in the city of Ahmedabad. I started with analyz ing the character and understanding his dai ly schedule, which helped me shape the design concept and arr ive at an appropr iate layout.

The focus of the design is the Art studio and l iv ing space for him and his brother. Inter ior spaces and volumes are def ined by the elements and activ i t ies and not by the physical boundaries, hence al l the spaces are visual ly connected with each other, which enhance the core activ i ty.

This exper imental Pavi l ion is designed and bui l t by our batch as a part of studio project. The purpose of the project was to learn a new mater ial and technology as wel l as to impart the understanding for developing dif ferent ial forms us ing digital and parametr ic methods. Whi le brain storming, we real ized that the bl ind have only two sources of communication; one is the dotted t i les and the other is Brai l le. So we decided to create a leisure space for their recreation. The form referred as pod was bui l t of inter locked PU sheets & Corian, instal led in the atr ium of a business complex. The two part, pod is div ided into banking area and cafeter ia for v isual ly chal lenged people.

“Charma” : Shop for Indian tradit ional footwearI

ProJECt tYPE : Retai l design

StUDio : Studio 2, Semester 4

DAtE : January, 2015

loCAtioN : Modeal Retai l park,

Ahmedabad, India

The Leather footwear craft of Rajsthan ‘Mojar i ’ has i ts own cultural h istory and value. I t was introduced and used by the Royals and later became our t radit ion. This Project is an attempt to grat i fy the product’s cultural values and r ichness of i ts craftsmanship. I see this Retai l not as a shop but as a Craft-Design Studio, located in retai l complex in Ahmedabad.

Mojar i being a craft which needs to be exper ienced to understand the whole retai l space works as t ransit ion space, hence the concept of Shoescape has came. The steps aid in s i t t ing and cl imbing with workshop, history, design lab., Display adjoining i t . The concept of Shoescape is achieved through an open and f lowing conf igurat ion of space inspired by step-wel l and the use of t radit ional elements.

MADHUPUR, AHMEDABAD

Mojari is the traditional footwear of Rajasthan, in which soft leather of cow or goat is used for upper, while the sole and heels are made by layers of thick buffalo or camel leather, which is glued and stiched together by a cotton thread. The simplest form of mojari is made out only of leather, the left and the right foot has no difference and the mojari takes shape of the wearer’s feet. Ornamentation is done with silk, metal or woolen threads. This work is called KASHIDAKARI(a persian word for needle work). The men undertake the work of making the mojari while women embellish these mojaris with embroidery.

While craft of mojari is famous in North India, Rajasthan is the main hub for mojari. It has been brought to Kutchh, and various other parts of Gujarat due to the migration of Marwada Meghalaya community from Rajasthan.

Madhupur area of Ahmedabad has also become famous for Mojari making craft.

Project is to develop our own understanding of Design pr inciples through 2-dimentional explorat ions us ing tr iangular moti fs and taking them into 3-dimentions and explor ing forms and geometr ical aspects of space.

It started with working and understanding how a tr iangle can behave dif ferent ly once i t goes through processes of cutt ing and translat ing, and then proceeded by creating patterns after applying dif ferent design pr inciples. I imagine the tr iangle as three dimensional composit ions in space. I pract iced concepts of composit ion, form, st ructure, space formation, and circulat ion dur ing this exercise and communicated spatial meaning us ing our selected combination of tetrahedrons.

Beholding both aspects of crafts done by locals and the royalty, the state of Rajasthan gave us an opportunity to see the transformation of the craft to crafted-royalty. Craft being r ich in hand sk i l l , techniques and also being ut i l i tar ian, prospered cultural ly.

I learnt that the dif ferent iat ion of spaces occur by unapparent div is ions according to the activ i t ies in space of Forts , palaces and monuments. The organizat ion of spaces in the bui l t forms is inf luenced by the hierarchy of spaces, usage and functional i ty. Background of communit ies gets conveyed in form of foreground through crafts as the medium and bui l t form as the frame. We real ized that the roots of t radit ion never change but what changes is the express ion.

The course developed the understanding of human habitat and bui l t forms through the act of measure drawing. I t entai ls measur ing and recording of the tangible aspects of bui ldings and represent ing the understanding of these aspects through appropr iate drawings and case studies. Focusing on the effect ive communication of detai ls through the medium of drawing and sketches, the course helped me to understand the s ignif icance of dimensions, proport ions, s izes and geometry in the making of an inhabitable environment. The course included vis i t ing s i tes in and around Ahmedabad to explore methods of construct ion, st ructural systems, bui lding mater ials and joinery along with the measure drawing of specif ic house in old city of Ahmedabad.
