1 THE DENSITY AND THE CONTEMPORARY CITYmasterplan for the redevelopment of Barracas

Barracas, Buenos Aires (BS)March 2014 - February 2015

Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, Universidad de Belgrano (AR)Professor Alejandro Vaca Bononato

2 The density and the contemporary city

1 the density and the contemporary city

The project has been developed during the Double Degree program in Buenos Aires. The project is divided in two parts: TFCa (Trabajo Final de Carrera A), where the objective is the development of a proposal at the urban scale for the barrio Barracas, in relation to the density and morphology of existing urban pattern; TFCb where a proposal at the scale of the block has been elaborated. The design process is based on a phenomenological approach and explores the tools of the architect in the contemporary age.

1 the density and the contemporary city

The critical view is the position taken by the architect in respect to Barracas neighbourhood, regarding both tangible and intagible aspects of architecture. The creation of the critical view is a focal point of the design process, as it is a prerequisite to think of an architecture culturally relevant through a phenomenological approach.

1 the density and the contemporary city

The critical view has an ethical value because it justifies the new meaning that we entrust to the project as architects. This is particularly important considering the era in which we live in, where the glut of images and interpretations increasingly characterizes the globalized city.

1 the density and the contemporary city

The two main design tools consist of manual exercises (drawing, writing, models) and digital (photomontages). The fragments are derived from the decomposition of the architectural references. They are recombined through models and photomontages at different scales.

1 the density and the contemporary city

The combination of fragments is a compositional exercise that raises the issue of scale, which plays within various parts of the object. The architecture of the fragment is not a finished object, and inherently contains the problem of the relationship between the parts that constitute it.

2 social and sustainable dwelling

The project deals with the sustainable redevelopment for the Tour&Taxis area, which includes the masterplan design and the requalification of the old customhouse Gare Maritime. Three typologies of housing based on innovative soil property models have been designed, integrating the architectural, physical and economic aspects. The architectural concepts have been elaborated through different tools, such as: Optimal Cost Analysis on the basis of the EU requirements about NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building), stakeholder analysis, MACBETH approach analysis, static and dynamic Cost Benefit Analysis.

Localization of the project site, the Tour&Taxis area, in the context of the regional strategic Plan Kanaal in Bruxelles.
