CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF CARMENカルメンの聖母大聖堂CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF CARMENカルメンの聖母大聖堂CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF CARMENカルメンの聖母大聖堂

The contest for the design of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Carmen, was a contest sponsored by the governance of Casanare’s Department in Colombia. It took place in its capital Yopal.Due the determination of the renewal of the Department’s Cathedral made by the governance, a public contest was open. It’s baseline determined the design of a new cathedral as well as a new community center where also would be the home of the bishop and his entourage. Before the execution of the project our team made a complete research over the symbols and signs on catholic church, from that point on, every concept built on the design stage, was linked to one or several catholic symbols. The design elements of the Cathedral are basically: a Tape that comes from the ground and wraps a main Box which is containing all the holly and eucharistic activities of the com-munity. The project provides comfortable outdoor public spaces and natural illuminated and aired interior places. A subtle contrast between traditional and modern architecture design. The Cathedral presents itself as an icon, a hot point and a milestone for the region.Tape: is the representation of God, the celestial Father, who protects his Daughter, Virgin Mary, and his parishioners, by involving them.Box (massive container): Represents the grace of Virgin Mary and her qualities as mother, spouse and daughter. The container was meant to be a warm space, concept that was managed throughout the light that filters into the wood celosia of the facades.Holy Cross: this main element represents both the dead and the resurrection of JesusChrist, an ace of light that comes in trough the structure by its silhouette carved all the way through into the Box as well as into the main Tape. This gesture specifically expresses a clear faith and an all time protection from a Higher Being, God, and as the light is spread all around, its word too, by the bishop or priest at the pulpit and the atrium.

CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF CARMENカルメンの聖母大聖堂

A Box that Hovers: the whole structure appears to be floating from the ground representing the spirituality and purity of Virgin Mary as truly mother of Jesus. The whole celosia as a facade concept is conceived to achieve the wished verticality as a visual effect.Light Strips: Represent the 20 mysteries of the Rosary (Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and Luminous), all the prays and devotion to Virgin Mary, JesusChrist and God.Bridge: Represents the spiritual link between Virgin Mary and Saint Simon Stock, whom was gifted scapulary of the “Carmelitas” order from the Virgin on the Carmelino Mount, which in the order represents the love of Mary Virgin for humanity and is implemented through the order’s community service.About the Plaza: the path that conducts to the church is a diagonal in the plaza that as a concept is the path to cath-olic faith by dedication to the church and its principles that avery member has to follow to achieve salvation.Landscaping: three “green” spots are placed around the plaza, these elements also correspond to the basic con-cept of the project, Virgin Mary and her qualities as mother, spouse and daughter. Three spots for each virtue.Water mirror under the Cathedral: allusion to the catholic baptism and the purification out of sin that it implies. The Belfry: it’s shows itself as a milestone over the entire project. Is the most palpable and literal representation of the Virgin Mary among the design complex.

The design of the shape of the project was the mingling of two distinctive objects, an Ark and a Caterpillar. As a starting point each one of the elements of this objects was geometrized into triangles of different sizes. Then, operations of juxtaposition and intersection were performed so the facades were rendered. Finally the triangles were transformed into layer and from the inside out, starting from glass and ending up with stone the facades were composed. This not only gives the facility depth but character and ownership over the ground where is implanted. The building is elevated from the ground by a huge slab that not only pull apart the building from any fooding but only brings confident to the inhabitants of the region and to the refuges. From this slab, the safely scientific or empiric appreciation of natural phenomenons is granted. The vivid color of the interior of the project contrast with the sobriety of the outside, its flat and dark colours.Contemporary facades with stone textured with electronic maps contrasts with maps of the region embodied in the slab of the building. The land slopes in both, the approach areas and the parking lot, lead the visitor not only physically but visually to the project

It was built in a small town 30 minutes from Bogota. The total area of the lot is 244 sqm and 125 sqm constructed. It was elevated about 1 meter on it initial design and it gives it the feeling of hover over the ground. Straight lines contrast with the nature surrounding it and the brick treatment acts like a mingled agent between the construction and the nature. Its architectonic plan divides vehemently the social areas to the private areas of the house making the intimate coexistence manageable at any moment.

NIKKEN SEKKEI ICD Project, Dubai日建設計

Dubai

By far the largest project I’ve been involved in. I had the opportunity to work on the Concept Stage of this skyscraper, specifically on the “Ultra Deluxe” Hotel entrance where creative disposition from all architects involved was sciential. In urban high level impact projects such as this, the repercussion of what is being designed and studied has to be consciously present at all times as well as all the requirements of the client or in this case, clients; which make the evolution of the ideas more complex and the architectural design work a challenge.

A small Participation, due the fact that the project was in its last stage, Construction. The contribution to the project was only in its facade. Some changes on the louvers orientation and shape, as well as some improvements on the textures of the tower's facade.Never the less, the involvement on a totally dierent stage of a skyscraper helped me to visualize what the projection and execution of a whole macro-project is.
