INSTITUTE OF BACTERIOLOGY [2015]The old Bacteriology Institute of Leuven will harbour different programmes in order to bring back its former life and revitalise the area.

Every story has two sides. This is one of them. It all began in 1896 with the construction of a new innovative bacteriological institute. A strong eclectic detailled front facade at the base of a little square pushes away the forgotten back side. Livestock gets shipped on and off. Over the years the building has strayed away from his course: innovation and an image for Leuven and beyond. We want to restore this. The front facade gets a facelift, back to its former glory while respecting its history. The Kolverniershof receives an update, a way to deal with the ever-growing city. The back side becomes another front.

The proposal takes on the link that can exist between the decay of a building together with the promise of giving it a new lease of life. Air of transitiveness and temporality preserved in the way the site does not harbour a program in its missuse, contrasting with a new architecture that dialogues with the past.

Contrast, pregnant of ambiguity, as it preserves a state of the longitivity in the building while it asserts current revelance and functionality.

The architectural proposal then sets a game on what persists over the rest, on how this building could be brought to life.

The world broken. Reflecting on that moment. And then again. An enclosed place that blends into the landscape. Turned towards the inside. A place within a place. To unwind. Or to put things into perspective. To meditate even. Like in a convent. Totally different from the outside world. Without losing the link to reality. With a corridor as connection. A cloister.

A plot in between two guard walls, stuffing it with two houses, public functions and bicycle parking for students of the nearby university ... Creating a visual link between the front and rear volume is essential. An informal reading café has the ability to bend itself open to both side, a place which is the extension of the outdoor space.

The approach allows for the release and escape of the towering walls and brings a panoramic view along with it. The bowl-shaped bicycle storage is hidden from view. The two houses seem pushed together and the junction forms the main circulation area. Columns, stems and crowns alternate so the gardens beneith really continue. The subtle differences in height and the shape of the folded back window provide a funnel shape which causes an attractive force to the garden.

The city wall has been a leading element since 1230, separating the inner and outer city. Around the wall, there used to be a free space of a few meters, for the purpose of circulation and security. The free space must remain and give a sense of continuity around the city, but also form a connection and separation towards the park.

Continuing the pavement through the beekeeper shop and the outer space behind, there is a certain attraction towards the shop, located in the circulation zone around the rampart. The property must serve as a link between the lively town and the tranquility of the park. The entity is lifted and can be seen as a physical barrier and green beacon of Maastricht. The material resulted from this fact. The suspended volume contains the three main functions of the house, each with its distinct experience to the city, park and wall.

The road and the fence, two leading elements in this landscape. Both come back as a leading form. The hedge is continued by a dominant marl wall. The corridor, which runs parallel, connects the three units and the shared area. The height of the slope is solved by creating three different levels, each with unique modules, patios and common areas. This tripartite is reflected in the stratification of the hill; plain, vineyards and the arm. The spaces are linked together to form a certain unity, but however, also partially fragmented among themselves, as the patchwork of fields in the vicinity. The two roofs seem ripped from the landscape, blowing out and framing a view of the scenery.

An old part. A new part. All covered under the same roof. Literally living under the same roof. It’s visible. You can feel it in every room. Witness it everywhere. A double central patio. One on the inside, one the outside, but still within.

A pavilion. In the middle of the garden. What should it be? What should it become? A machine. Versatile in its uses, not only usable in the summer, but during every season. The roof can slide open into 3 pieces. Walls can be opened and adapted with the same principle.

Inspired on the short film 'Flatlife' of Jonas Geirnaert.A dormroom, consisting out of 3 modules of 3 x 3 x 3 m. Each function gets its own cubicle: sleeping and studying, eating and dressing up. The stairs become a part of the furniture, a crucial part of the kitchen.
