“I think that joy is the key word in our work. It must be felt. If you don´t feel joy in what you´re doing, then you´re not really

operating. And there are miserable moments which you´ve got to live through. But really, joy will prevail.”

Louis Kahn.

Avocado Plantation

Project

Uruapan is located in one of the most cultur-al states of Mexico. In it you can find places full of history and traditions, that are reflect-ed in the way of living of the people and also mainly in their constructions. Uruapan is distinguished by possessing an extensive natural richness, thanks to the diverse rivers that cross the city, and also to the humid weather conditions of the region. avocado plantation.

Among the vegetation, the jacaranda and avocado tree are the most common spe-cies to be found. The project is located in the south limits of the city and it was part of what used to be an avocado plantation.

The project consists in generating a house that would meet the customer´s needs and also the context´s. The concept aims to recover the Mexican housing principles of this area of Mi-choacán. The distribution of spaces is around an interior courtyard, which becomes the main element in the heart of the project. The project has an axis or screen formation that slices the volume, generating diverse scenarios, and more private spaces in the interior and exterior. Be-cause of its location inside the residential area, it lacks a front façade, with that a corner façade is generated and it makes the volume to be appreciated in a better way.

Paseo Santa Lucia

Washignton

Monetrrey, Nuevo Léon

The city of Monterrey is one of Mexico´s most important and most populated cities, but it faces a lack of public spaces for cultural and artistic expression. All of this results on a series of social problems, like violence and insecurity. The site is located in the heart of the city; a place known as Barrio Antiguo, which has been abandoned as a consecuence of the situation mentioned.

Many projects had been done in order to improve the conditions of this part of the city. An example is the riverwalk known as Paseo Santa Lucia, that connects two of the most important public places in Monterrey; La Macroplaza y Fundidora

13

Page 14: Portfolio Madrigal
Page 15: Portfolio Madrigal

The proximity of the land with the riverlwalk makes the main objective to be a reinforce-ment of this connections and to generate a design of a school that will have a direct relationship with the site through public spaces that will allow culture to be expressed. The project is formed by two volumes that contain the heart of the arts school, a public space enriched by the perme-ability generated by the bracket structure that serve as an exhibition area and allow access to the interior of it. The volumes offer terraces at different levels in order to appreciate the diverse views of the place. It also has plazas that connect the existing Paseo Santa Lucia, like the one generated at the east creating an esplanade that connects the one located under the bridge which provides direct access to Fundidora Park.

DEPORTIVO MENCHACA

QUERÉTARO, QRO.

Querétaro is a state that counts with a strong identity derived mainly by its history captured in its historic downtown, In spite of it there are communi-ties like Menchaca II that are very poor, where lack of space for social interaction has led to problems of insecurity and disintegration. Active Workshop aims to generate a contest which goal is to provide architectural solutions to low income areas with an extremely limited budget. The project studies the needs of the community and generates defined and self-defined spaces that can be transformed and restructured in accordance to the evolving needs and activities of the commu-nity.

The property is located next to a soccer field and is divided by paths generated by flows of people dwelling area of the northern part moves to the south in search of services.

19

Page 20: Portfolio Madrigal
Page 21: Portfolio Madrigal

The project aims to strengthen and dignify these flows, providing spaces equipped for the gen-eration of different activities. On site are mounds of earth and rubble that form dunes of various sizes, the project concept is derived from those elements, suggesting a rearrangement of these to contain and generate various spaces where proposed activities will be carried out by the community.

POPULAR ALTERNATIVE HOUSING

CANCÚN, QROO.

The city of Cancun, developed in the decade of the seventies by architects Landa Verdugo, was viewed as an international tourist destination with three main elements: an airport, a hotel area and a living area. The first aspects were successfully achieved housing however had a different impact.

The proposed design scheme responded to superblock (as core infrastructure, housing densified and a services perimeter wire) where the pedestrian areas would had con-nected the housing core with outside ser-vices and road connectors between different blocks would been generated. This idea was replaced by a grid pattern where dwelling became an element lagged and communi-cation between different areas of services became fractionated by vehicular streets.

25

Page 26: Portfolio Madrigal

Cancun has a growing urban sprawl extending to the area known as Franja Ejidal located on the periphery formed by rough terrain occupied by the poorest part of the pop-ulation, mostly immigrants from other states. This informal housing, through self, is able to adapt better to the site. Many of these homes lack basic infrastructure, so in response to this, public institutions want to regularize the land and / or relocate the population in new complexes that do not respond to adequate housing and community. Aware of the impact both social and urban, the project focuses on this sector looking for a response to the housing needs of the population currently living in informal settlements in the city of Can-cun.

The project is made up of 10 towers of 12 apartments each, on a half-acre land. Each tower has three levels plus the roof and vertical circulations feed throughout. Each plant consists of four housing which in turn share the same vertical mode bucket and ventilation facilities for the given services.

Page 29: Portfolio Madrigal

The module settings and their grouping is based on the use of the features characteristic of the site. Initially each housing start with 18m2, as covered area, but with the structure of castles and chains it is ready to generate a total of 63m2 growth. This growth is divided into 5 structural modules prepared for auto-construction.

The individual housing cell functions as a space that contains a series of activities without lim-itations rooms or walls, except for services, for its operation, configuration, usage and growth. It is a home that offers half the meters of construction and in return generates the structure housing to grow a higher percentage than those granted by the government.

URBAN REGENERATION

MONTERREY, N.L.

The urban situation of Monterrey Metropolitan Area (AMM) is the result of the increase in its population, a low-density urban model with disaggregated land uses, and with a mobility focus on the infrastruc-ture for vehicles. But mobility evolves by changing the source and destination of the flows, ie when people change their location and ctivities.

This evolution reflects the identity of Monterrey Culture, a society based on constant improvement product of a hard work. Its econ-omy and growth comes from, the factories, sources of employment. This factories and industries be-came detonating of the urban and sub-urban sprawl current form.

35

Page 36: Portfolio Madrigal
Page 37: Portfolio Madrigal

The northeastern boundary of the downtown area, its proximity to Metro trunk system and central bus privileges it as a turning point for the union or articulation of the city. Through the regeneration of some factories and disused buildings within 300m plans to locate vertical hous-ing, mixed-use buildings, formal and informal trade, services and equipment to be used by the community with a function that flirt with previous use.

37

Page 38: Portfolio Madrigal
Page 39: Portfolio Madrigal

The proposal was generated from site analysis were obtained road routes suitable for every user, whether motorized and non-motorized, from the metro backbone, containing sever-al buildings protected by INAH and be one of the areas more representative of the growth and evolution of the AMM was decided to use existing industries as detonators disused urban regen-eration.

The project aims to incorporate one of the main industries that were generated in the area, with the intention of recovering it using the facilities had adapting to serve the community basing on the need to create workshops that make up a community center in order to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the area and thus increase the hours of life of the area in general. Taking advantage of the characteristics of the location of the factory La Malinche, this becomes the main access to the area from one of its principal roads Avenida Carranza allowing a connec-tion with the adjacent housing area.
