Having majored in Public Art as an under-
graduate in Jiangnan University, I would now
like to pursue further studies in Illustration.
Such studies will help me fulfill a dream that I
have had since childhood: to be an excellent
illustrator.
I got quite familiar with the basics of painting
and acquired the necessary skills. And the
most important thing was that it has trained
me to think as a painter. I have been exposed
to illustrations from home and abroad, which
fascinated me so much and gave me differ-
ent perspectives, like an eye-opener. I got
inspired and full of imagination.

This series of works comes from one of my dreams.
I Dreaming that I am riding a shark through the forest without knowing where to
go.
I wake up and write my dream down. And it gradually becomes to be the first work
of this series.
I don't remember since when I became so intrigued by fish. Their beautiful-grained
texture and smooth skin always draws my attention.
We all talks about protecting animals, but we always ignore the feelings of the fish
when we make reference to the cruelty of hunting animals. No one has ever
considered that the fish have feelings.
They have no feelings,do they?
Global warming and commercial overfishing have been greatly threatened the
survival environment of fish.
I have been sparing no time to give publicity to and appeal to people for protecting
sharks since I watched “No Shark’s Fin” video five years ago. I convinced relatives
and friends to give up eating this kind of food used for showing off and satisfying
their own vanity.
Five years ago,I was a high school student. What I only could do was to make
defense for sharks with my mouth. However, now,I have an ability to catch these
beautiful sea creatures with my own panting-bush,and make more people pay
attention to them, knowing that they also have their own life and feelings.
How interesting looking at them!
Let’s ride a fish and go traveling!

TRAVEL WITH FISH RIDING
I L L U S T R A T I O N
I got the fish-riding idea from the cartoons and myths I was exposed to in my childhood.
I thought they could ride horses, wolves, birds; why couldn't I ride a fish?
With riding a salmon on the trail of the concrete citythe air of whole city is filled with the smell of ocean.
Thus I got inspired and finished this drawing.

It is just the start of this series of my work. I planned to complete
it this year. It’s composed of 20 pieces of drawings.
I hope there’s stronger interaction between the works and space
when exhibited since public art was my major in the university.
My advisor and I are now working on the final exhibition form.
This is my latest plan of the latter half year and also the only
one of my artwork collection which is in progress.

Course name:National Art Design and Investigation
My research interest:Innovative Design of Ethnic Totem
This course is about living in a minority area for half a month to study ethnic characteristics of art and do innovative design about it. China has 56 ethnic groups. They have different customs and their own belief and totem worship. I studied their totem patterns and their living utensils. Combining this with modern elements, I did my own innovative design. I hope it can help promote their unique culture in modern society.
We went to the northwest of Sichuan Province to watch and learn local customs. We were inspired by the difference exhibited here from the city life.
There’s not only one totem worship in one ethnic group. For example, Tibetan ethnic minority worships yak and sheep which are very important animals in their daily life; and conch which are extremely rare in the mountainous area. After half a month of observation and research of the three ethnic minorities, I got their most representative totems.
Tiger family is the ancient ancestors of the Yi people whose biggest characteristic is that they have been in a worship of black tiger until now. Many Yi people still call themselves LuoLuo which means tiger family. They have Tiger Festival which is celebrated every year. They offer sacrifice to tiger progenitor and pray for blessings on this big day.
Yak is an important totem worship in Tibetan history. They consecrate yak head
in Aba Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.
Beichuan ancient Qiang is sheep-raising nation. Due the important role of sheep
in social and economic life, Qiang gradually formed the worship of sheep.

Design Description
Tiger God is the most efficacious God in Yi people’s heart. I did the innovative design based on the black tiger image as souvenirs packaging graphic design without copying the ancient totem. The main color is the traditional color pattern in Yi which are red, black and yellow. And I used traditional graphic pattern to maintain the ethnic characteristics.

Descendants of sheep --
Qiang
Design Description
Beichuan ancient Qiang is sheep-raising nation. Due the important role of sheep in social and economic life, Qiang gradually formed the worship of sheep.
Totem uses a sheep's head as main pattern with watchtower graphic. I didn't use pure original Qiang embroidery patterns and colors, just combined a little ethnic elements with my innovative creation together. I got the inspiration from the original facial make-up in Qiang watchtower and finished the middle part in the sheep head with a modern touch.

Plateau Yak --
Zang (Tibetan people)
Design Description
Yak is an important totem worship in Tibetan history. They consecrate yak head from generation to generation.
I used yak head pattern as a carrier combining with the color of red, black and white instead of traditional navy blue which pervades in Tibetan area. The traditional decorative pattern was kept with refining.

1. Tom is a naughty boy who has stolen the eggs laid
by the neighbor’s elephant.
2. He has grabbed the wireless signal through the zoo.
3. He was fishing shark from a pond in his grandfather's.
4. No matter how naughty Tom is, in the mother's arms,

This course was an elective course at my sophomore
year. We needed to finish 4-6 short picture books. I did
many sketches but without complete story due to the
limit of the length. And I failed to save all the drafts.
Now I just picked this one which is brief and sweet. And
each one tells its own story.
These two pieces are the design sketches which I gave up finishing a story with for that it couldn't
make a whole story within six pieces.

artistic effect is created by the use of
different materials.
Jiangnan University is quite beautiful, located near Tai Lake, next to Li Lake scenic area.

Beautiful mountains, limpid streams and misty rains.it's what Chinese Jiang
Nan is like.Chinese Jiang Nan is as tender and soft as water, with soft inside
and tough outside, which shows the best part of the spring of Jiang Nan.
The design elements are: university north gate, library, Qushui bridge. Design
sketch shows buildings standing on the surface of the water. It demonstrates
static and dynamic contrast.
The main material is iron nail. The relation between virtuality and reality is
demonstrated by different sizes, positions and density contrasts of iron nails.
And the beauty of the texture is fully expressed by lighting effects.
4. Board making
The thickness of the board is the key since the nails are
the main element. I use the wood plate as the base and
then stuck foam board on it , and finally covered it
with KT board.
Choose the appropriate thickness to make a solid
foundation for the three-dimensional effect of the
nails.
5. Drawing on boardPut A4 draft on 90*120 board.
2. Preparation / DraftMake a draft of the outline of Jiangnan University with its distinctive buildings.
3. Material preparingFour kinds of nails with different lengths are selected to highlight integrity and layering of
the drawing.

I consider this as an experimental experience in ways of drawing. I try to display the beautiful rainy Jiangnan through
different materials and lighting. It took me three weeks to finish and made me more confident and open-minded in
choosing material.

The bottom of the picture writes “YOU KEEP TALKING I KEEP SHOOTING”; and the very left side writes “Fight Me”. Those two slogans express the spirit of sports” Go fight & Never say never”. Basketball spirit is the soul of the fighters. They are shouting “We stand alone together!”

I adored a girl who loved ice cream. She had ice cream almost every day in the summer. One day she got sick and no cold food allowed but still fancied an ice cream saying to me” I want an ice cream though”.. I drew this “ocean” ice cream for her.
I borrowed some techniques from northwest peasant paintings, such as the simple bright colors. Cattle and sheep are vital in northwestern daily life. I add “farm” touch into it; many straight and strong lines in the character “食(Food/Eat)match the upright and honest character of northwestern peasants.
Food is the paramount necessity of the people. China is known for its rich food culture. I used modern graffiti font to display the character “食(Food/Eat) combining with Chinese traditional patterns. I chose northwest cuisine in the plate which I designed according to the characteristics of northwest culture.
Everyone goes through ups and downs. You feel anxious, gloomy. Sometimes bad mood comes at wrong times. I am a Gemini. Another me, the evil one occasionally pop out disturbing my good times. I drew this one afternoon when I felt very gloomy. I want to find out this witch and illustrate her by drawing.

This course requires finishing a toy design. I decided to make a monster Garage Kits for I’ve been interested
in game models and Garage Kits.
I chose Super Sculpey which is not widely used at home but common abroad as material. It was a challenge
though for it’s different from traditional clay sculpture. It took half a month through trial and error to finish
this.
I love animals very much. Therianthropy came to my mind when I thought about making a Garage Kits. Rabbits always impress people as delicate and cute. Then I think” All right I want to do something different!”
I have a special forces of animals in my mind. The captain should be a gorilla, strong and sharp; The investigator should be a hound dog, smart and quick. The strongest one should be a tiger. So what about the rabbit? It’s small but strong with striking long ears and big front teeth. I imagine one of its hands having special power, like a powerful fist. The rabbit warrior was made gradually in my mind and this I finished my manuscript.

The finished clay model needs to be put into the oven for 15 minutes to fix. Due to the time limits, I didn't do the color it or do
any other refining. I'll finish it if time allows. And I want to do more about the images of animal special forces in my mind.

his course needs us to make spoons
by stainless steel and make plates by
copper. Through doing this, I was
familiarized with different properties
of metal. It was a good practice and
made a foundation for metal use in
future public sculpture.
Experiment
I tested the properties of stainless steel
with a stainless steel bar. It turned out
it can’t be made curly ideal shape
with hammer. The spoon made out of
it was far from satisfactory. Through
the experiment I have learnt about the
stainless steel, which lay the
foundation for my final design.

It took one month to finish it. The seemingly simple shape of a spoon in fact contains a
lot of subtle production techniques. I chose 5mm thick steel plate to ensure the quality.
Design description

whose shape is the
shape of a water drop.
The arc of the spoon I
designed allows a user
to feel excellent fit.

The second phase of the course requires the
use of copper to do a plate. Considering
copper’s property-soft and bigger ductility,
I fancied making a plate of one kind plant
shape.
It was autumn; the campus was covered with
falling leaves. I picked one up, nice shape,
similar color with copper. I decided to make
the plate copying this.
The leaves I picked in the garden.
