Drage zbiralke in zbiralci,

Dear Collectors,
Recent years have seen rapid changes in almost everyfacet of life. Postal industry and, consequently, also thephilately, are no exception to that. The demand forspeed, which is greater than ever, has forced the postaloperators to explore and use new technologies to speedthe delivery of mail. As a result, the use of traditionalpostage stamps has declined and new products haveappeared such as stamp coils sold from vendingmachines, self-adhesive stamps, personalized stampsand private postal operator stamps. Even though mostof these products are primarily intended for postal service users, they have also become collectables just likethe first postage stamps have. Post of Slovenia’s personalized stamps ordered by private or corporate customers, community organisationsand others to commemorate important events will notbe available for sale through Post of Slovenia’s customerStanding Orders. These stamps are produced in limitededitions and sold only to the person/business orderingthem. Nevertheless, I am sure that sooner or later thesestamps will also appear on the philatelic market simplybecause they will be affixed to the mail. Collectorsinterested in purchasing personalized stamps, can, however, order Post of Slovenia’s official personalizedstamp issues. The first such stamps were issued on 24January 2007. Besides, there are still plenty of traditional stamps to collect and I am sure that withthe current diversity of available stamps collectors canfind almost anything they are interested in to buildtheir collections.
The Editor

Mnogo redkeje jihtvori mineral aragonit. Aragonitni kristali so pomemb-na naravna geolo{ka dedi{~ina. Enako sestavo imatamnogo pogostej{i mineral kalcit in {e redkej{i vaterit.
jih {e pred prvo svetovno vojno imenovali `eleznat cvet, saj so aragonit takrat najpogosteje na{li prav v razpokahin votlinah v `elezovi rudi. Kadar v vodni raztopinimo~no prevladuje magnezij, le-ta zavira rast kalcita, zato se namesto njega izlo~a aragonit. Aragonit torejpraviloma nastaja tam, kjer jamska voda s seboj prina{ave~ magnezija. Prevladuje v plitvovodnihmorskih sedimentih toplej{ega podnebja. Z menjava-njem prirastnic aragonita in organskih snovi v nekaterih{koljkah nastanejo biseri.

ARAGONITE
Slovenian karst caverns are knownin the world also by their decorativeformations. Water rich with carbondioxide dissolves karstified rocks, and the minerals in the form of acalcareous sinter crust are formedin all kinds of shapes. Most of themform the mineral calcite, whilearagonite is rare. Slovenian mostimportant natural monument witharagonite crystals, presented on thestamp, is the Ravenska Cave atCerkno. Up to 10 cm long crystalneedles form beam-like bunches onthe cavern ceiling and walls.Aragonite was named by the mineralogist Werner after theSpanish region Aragón in 1796.According to its chemical structurethis is calcium carbonate, CaCO3.The orthorhombic crystal lattice determines the columnar andneedle-like shapes. Parallel growingcrystals combine into irregularbranching stalactitic forms. Bentsintery and crystal branchingbunches are called helictites.More aragonite is formed at highercavern temperatures. In Slovenia itis formed in rare caverns only dueto the special chemical structure ofthe water there. When it containsmore magnesium, it stops the calcite’sgrowth and in its place aragonite isformed.Aragonite is also formed from thewater of some warm springs that iscooling down. Changing accretionsof aragonite and organic materialsproduce pearls in some shells.Aragonite forms most of the molluscs’shells and corals’ skeletons.

ARAGONIT

Mogo~ni masiv Mangarta obvladuje osrednji delJulijskih Alp. V gosposki sose{~ini z Jalovcem (2645 m)zemljepisno zaklju~uje njihov vzhodni del nad Ziljico inPredelom. Najbolj obiskaniplaninski poti, z imeni simbolizirata mejno lego, stazahtevna Slovenska in la`ja Italijanska pot.

Mangart (2678 m)
The mighty Mt Mangart is located in the central partof the Julian Alps. With Jalovec (2645 m) it completestheir eastern part above Ziljica and Predel. The precipitous wall of Mali Koritni{ki Managart (2332 m),Gamsov rob under Huda {krbina and the top of themountain reflect in the Belope{ka Lakes and create aunique high mountainous sequestered nook, controlled by the shepherds from Rate~e, even though itlies in Italy. The Southern part of the mountain above the valley ofLo{ka Koritnica is grassy but still very mighty-looking.The old military road, the historic hamlet Strmec andthe fort Predel emphasize the strategic position above

the ancient pass between the coldalpine North and the warmMediterranean. From this sideMangart is one of the most visitedpeaks in the Julian Alps. The roadattracts motor- and bicyclists to2079 m above sea level under theMangart Saddle. The most visitedroutes are the difficult Slovenianand the easier Italian.Varied rock structure, infamous bythe deadly landslide that in 2000destroyed part of the Log village infew seconds, lush woods of theupper part of the Koritnica riverand the Mangart alpine meadowcreate the Julian Alps’ image in itsentirety. The Mangart flora is oneof a kind far around. Nowhere elsein the Julian Alps thrives the beautiful yellow creeping avens(Geum reptans), a mountainousperennial of 3-15 cm in heightwith the flowers up to 4 cm indiameter. It grows in rock crevasses,on humid rubble and scree.

Telesne prilagoditve na`ivljenje v drevesnih kro{njah sousmerjene v zmanj{anje telesne mase, zaradi ~esar imajo veverice razmeromadrobne kosti in nesorazmerno dolgezadnje noge, namenjene plezanju inskakanju. Prsti so dolgi in z njimi seoprijema vej.
No~ in neugodne vremenske razmereprebije v gnezdu.

The Red SquirrelThe Red Squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris Linnaeus, is arodent. It can be recognized by its long and thick tail. The colour of its coat varies with time of year. In thesummer its coat is red-brown and its underside white. The tail is usually darker than the back. In the winterits coat is of similar colour but its sides are silver greyand it grows 3 cm long ear-tufts. The young are darkerthan the adults. It lives in all types of forest and isoften found in parks and green urban areas. It is adapted to life on trees, on which it climbs andjumps pretty well. This is why it has a reduced bodysize and mass, tiny bones and disproportionately longhind legs for climbing and jumping. Toes are long andhave sharp claws, and the tail helps it to balance andsteer. Red Squirrels are omnivorous and eat mostlyfruit, seeds of trees and fungi, and also bugs, birds’ eggsand smaller birds. They also hide the food but not inlarger quantities. They don’t hibernate during the winter and therefore can’t survive without food long. The Red Squirrel is active during the day. It spends thenight and harsh weather in its nest or drey, made oftwigs and lined with moss, grass and other soft materials. The mating season starts in February, up to two litters
a year are possible and the gestation period is about36-42 days. Each litter usually contains 3-4 young thatsuckle from their mother for 7-10 weeks. The lifespanof the red squirrel is 5-6 years, in captivity it can reachup to 10 years. Its close relatives are the marmot and the Europeansouslik. Both species are adapted to life in open landscapes, like the steppes, and unlike the squirrel hide in underground tunnels. The Red Squirrel is protected, hunting of it is bannedand its living areas are to be preserved.

100 Years of Scouting
Scouting, also known as the Scout Movement, is theworld’s largest international youth organisation withmore than 38 million Scouts in 216 countries. The BoyScout movement was founded in Great Britain in1907 by Robert Stephenson Baden-Powell, a lieutenantgeneral in the British Army. Baden-Powell got the ideafrom his experiences with the British Army in SouthAfrica in the Second Boer War, where he was in chargeof a group of youths that supported the troops by carryingmessages during the Siege of Mafeking (1899-1900),and from Woodcraft Movement founded by the painterand writer Ernest Thompson Seton in the USA fouryears earlier. To put his ideas on the training of boysinto practise, Baden-Powell gathered 21 boys of mixedsocial backgrounds and held a week-long camp inAugust 1907 on Brownsea Island. The camp was a great success and in the autumn thatyear Baden-Powell started promoting his book Scoutingfor Boys which became popular reading among the boysof Great Britain. Youngsters started to organise themselves into scout groups and scouting quicklyspread first throughout the British Empire and lateraround the globe. Originally, the Boy Scout programwas aimed at boys, but Girl Scout groups began toappear as well.
The movement employs a program of non-formal education with an emphasis on practical outdoor activities (including hiking, camping, etc.) teachingyoungsters outdoor skills and aiming to develop a senseof community, a sense of responsibility and the abilityto help others. Characteristic of the movement is theScout uniform which intents to hide all differencesbecause scouting is open to everybody regardless socialstanding, religion or race. In Slovenia, there are two scout associations – The Scout Association of Slovenia which was established in1951 and became a member of The World ScoutAssociation in 1994 and The Slovene Catholic GirlGuides and Boy Scouts Association.

100 Jahre Pfadfinderbewegung
