President’s Corner Happy New Year! Our little town of Antioch surely has been hit by bad weather. I guess I don’t have to mention that, as we all well know that to be the situation. I

know it is not easy getting around. I appreciate all of you who made it out to the meeting on January 8th. It was a shorter meeting, but we were able to get much accomplished. The reports from the committees were very informative. We were happy to hear about the results of the Holiday Fundraiser, the collection of toys for Safe Place, the Open Arms Mission donation, and the Santa’s Village reports. Find the committee chairmen reports in the newsletter. I would like to thank all of those who were part of all the various activities that were held in November and December for all the work that you contributed. Congratulations to all on the success of your projects. Since the year of 2014 is just beginning, I would like to mention the activities that will be taking place in the near future. If you have any interest in joining, mark your calendars. January: The Arts and Craft Show at the 10th District meeting, January 22, 2014 at Midland CC. and Rocky’s Miniature Golf – January 29th February: Antioch Woman’s Club Pot Luck on the day of our General Meeting –February 12th March-Excess Funds meeting 1:00 on the same day as our board meeting at 10:00 a.m. April – Election of Officers at General Meeting, April 9th and Fun Day at McHenry Country Club – April 15th May – Closing Luncheon and Installation of Officers, May 14 and Chairmen Convention – May 15-17th Bloomington, IL In addition, every month there is a quilting meeting and book club meeting, the bridge and mahjongg groups held at the Senior Center and lastly, the reading program at Petty School. If you are bored this winter, as I always said to my children, I’ll find something for you to do, just ask me. We only have a few more months to accomplish quite a bit more. Thank you for all your help past, present and future. Maureen Fremgen President, AWC

On behalf of the AWC, I want to say thank you again to the sponsors of our new members. Public Issues Susan Straley Carolyn Crabtree Community Service Project February, March, and April’s community project

will be to collect donations for the food pantry at Open Arms Mission. Please bring one non-perishable food item or an individually wrapped toiletry/paper product to the monthly meeting. Items that are always needed are bar soap, dish soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, baby food and formula, juice boxes or bags, coffee, tea, and adult diapers (especially size small). Thank you in advance for your generosity. Focus on Community Safety This newsletter’s safety topic is “Winter Driving Tips.” Severe weather can be both frightening and dangerous for automobile travel. Remember the following:

Accelerate and decelerate slowly when driving in snow.

Allow extra distance between yourself and the car in front of you.

Know your brakes. Whether you have antilock brakes or not, the best way to stop is threshold breaking. Keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure to the brake pedal.

Make certain your tires are properly inflated.

Never mix radial tires with other tire types Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid

gas line freeze-up. Do not use cruise control when driving on

slippery roads If you really don’t have to go out on

slippery roads, don’t. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can.

Rachel Ray Dishes Judy McKillip Thank you to everyone that donated Jewel stamps for free Rachael Ray dinnerware. The response was much more than

was ever expected. We received enough stamps that we can donate over 50 pieces of dinnerware to the Safe Place.

Coupons Sigrid Brueggemann Happy New Year to all! During 2013, we completed 311 hours of volunteer work cutting coupons to send to our military families in Germany.

A total of 47,334 coupons were forwarded. It was very much appreciated, and I received a thank you letter in November. A big thank you goes to Mary Ware, Sally Rogers, Allene Nelson, Karen Schnur, Betty M. Schneider, Lorraine Oren, Pat Pasiewicz, and Barb Beese. Keep up the good work.

Operation Afghanistan Karen Potter

Please start saving up your items for our troops overseas and

bring them to our April meeting. Our troops can use most everything we use in everyday life but in smaller size: toiletries, candy, packaged drinks, small packages of cookies, crackers, munchies-- you get the idea. Please remember the female troops and the items that they can use: tampax, deodorants, and powders. We thank you for your generous donations as they are very much appreciated.

Domestic Violence Audrey Lyle Thank you to everyone who brought toys, gifts, and gift cards for our December collection for Safe Place. We were able to give them $2800 worth of gifts. Your

generosity is amazing, and the people at Safe place are very appreciative!

International Outreach Mary Ware Lee Anderson We will be meeting Wednesday, February 19 from

9 to 12 at the Meeting House. All are welcome. We will find a job for you -- putting together colors, cutting fabric, assembling quilts, sewing quilt tops. Any unwanted cotton or lightweight material is always gratefully accepted. We also have dresses to make if anyone is interested.

Education Committee Mary Beth Walsh Jean Haling We are still having fun with the reading volunteer program at W C Petty School. Twelve volunteers

will read with the children in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades during the month of February. This is a rewarding experience for the children as well as for our volunteers. Thank you to all who have volunteered their time for the

children of our community. Please volunteer for March, April and May.

We will be reviewing the Scholarship applications in March and April from Antioch Community High School and Lakes Community High School. Because of the fundraising efforts of our Santa’s Castle volunteers and our Ways and Means Committee, we will award three $1,000 scholarships to the College of Lake County or a four-year college of the student’s choice. Thank you for your dedication.

Home and Health Joan Foss Wishing you a happy and healthy new year. Please remember to wear RED to our February meeting in honor of

February being Heart Health Month. This year we received thirty-five responses to the request to fill out the annual health survey. Thank you to all that took the time to answer the questions. The answers show that our members are active--thirty-one hundred hours of exercise were reported; involved--six hundred ninety-one hours

of volunteer hours were spent working at animal shelters, schools and for the veterans to name a few; and aware of the need to remain healthy--many hours were spent receiving tests to assess current health and preventing future health crises.

Conservation Karen Noland Betty Chornoby As of January 1, 2014 the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 has now phased out the incandescent light bulbs as we know them. This law is meant to require more efficient bulbs and save on energy used to power them. Change is difficult, but hopefully information I found in the Chicago Tribune on January 3, 2014 will help you choose the

best bulbs to replace your incandescent bulbs. Halogen bulbs are most like the old ones,

but they don’t save as much electricity as the following types. Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL’s) are long-lasting, use very little electricity, and are relatively inexpensive. The downside is that they contain a small amount of mercury and must be disposed of as hazardous waste. Light-emitting diode bulbs (LED’s) last for decades and use less energy than CFL’s; however, they are more expensive.

The key to choosing the right type of bulb for your purposes is in knowing how to read the new labels. Lumens will determine the brightness of a bulb. For example, 450 lumens =40 watts, 800 lumens = 60 watts, 1100 lumens = 75 watts, and 1600 lumens will replace a 100 watt bulb. The other term to know is Kelvin or the number to measure temperature. The old warm light bulb will be a color temperature of 2700 Kelvin. The higher this number, the cooler and whiter the light. Also, look for the Energy Star label on CFL or LED bulbs. This should indicate energy savings, staying bright for the life of the bulb, and coming on instantly. Art Committee Judy Schieck Please bring your arts and crafts items to display at our February meeting. What a great opportunity to share our talents!

Ways and Means Beverly Amburgey Fundraising a.k.a. Ways and Means News Yes, our name has changed, but our job is still the same: Raising money

for our club! We did exactly that with our Holiday Party! We raised more than $6,200.00! This is $1,200 more than last year. Thanks go out to my committee who worked tirelessly for months. One of our committee even went out soliciting with a very painful injury. Sherry Burke gets the “atta girl” award for services above and beyond. Thanks, also, to our “angels” who are not on the committee but always go out and get certificates from their favorite restaurants, stores and salons. Our thanks to all the merchants who were so generous to us. We were really blessed with a large number of donations. Carson’s Community Days Fundraiser Our November Fundraiser with Carson’s was a great success! We sold value books at $5 and made $280.00. We then had an additional donation from Carson’s for $85.00 for a grand total of $360.00. Thanks to Nancy Andretich for her dedication and help in showing us that sometimes you have to try something different, and it can be FUN! However, the spring fundraiser was not so successful so we will not be doing that this year! Jewelry and Accessories Sale in March This sale has been cancelled. Call Jean Johnson for further info.

Game day April 15th Jean Johnson Hallelujah Hollywood! Game Day will be held on April 15 at McHenry Country Club! We have

a delightful luncheon followed by an afternoon of cards, games, and fun! Sign up using the form on the next page of this newsletter! Be sure to indicate what you’d like to play!

Santa’s Enchanted Village Susie Lancaster Antioch’s Santa’s Enchanted Village was open every day from Friday, November 29 through Monday, December 23, 2013; and 50 women from our club donated 218 hours of

their time to serve as Santa’s helpers. Almost 2500 people walked through our doors! Between the profit from pictures taken and donations made, we earned a total of $1500 for our club. Thanks to everyone for helping to keep this tradition alive. The citizens of Antioch love the castle because it is so much more intimate that most other Santa “set-ups.” I trust you had some fun, too! Book Club Marlene Fernandez

The AWC Book Club continues to meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month. I would love to see new and old members attend and join us in our conversations and camaraderie.

Hope to see you at the next meeting and if you are in need of any information please feel free to call me at 262-862-2767 Welcome All Bridge Players Susie Lancaster The AWC bridge group plays every Thursday morning at 9:00 AM at the Antioch Senior Center. We invite all bridge-playing members to come out and join us!
