 Animal Matching Another friend of Peter Rabbit is Jemima Puddle-duck, she lives on a farm with lotsof other animals. Encourage the children to match the Beatrix Potter characters

 with the real animals they represent by playing a simple matching game. What you will need:

l  Pictures of the Beatrix Potter™ characters. Suggestions are: Jemima Puddle-duck,Squirrel Nutkin, Mr. Jeremy Fisher, Mrs. Tiggy-winkle, Peter Rabbit, Tom Kitten,Mrs. Tittlemouse, Mr. Tod and Pigling Bland (images are available at

 www.peterrabbit.com).

l  Pictures of real animals. Suggestions are: ducks, squirrels, frogs, hedgehogs,rabbits, cats, mice, foxes and pigs.

 What to do:

l Lay the pictures of the real animals out on the floor and sit the childrenaround them.

l Hold up a picture of one of the characters and tell the children their name.Then ask, which animal do you think they are?

l  Allow the children a few guesses to see if they can work out which animalmatches which character. When they have a guess they can pick up the pictureof the animal from the floor.

l  When someone has correctly guessed which characters match which animal ask the children:

l How does this animal move? Get them to act this out.l  What noise does this animal make?l  Ask them to make the sound.l  What does this animal eat?l  Where does this animal live?

 Who am I?Tell the children in your setting about the character Mr. Jeremy Fisher and givethem some clues to see if they can guess what kind of animal he is.

l Tell them he is an animal who lives on the edge of a pondl He likes to keep his feet wetl He likes to eat fish, butterfly sandwiches and roasted grasshopper!l He likes to swim and also to hop aroundl He has smooth and slippery skinl He can make a sound which sounds like ribbit!

 Ask the children if they can guess what kindof animal Mr. Jeremy Fisher is! He is a FROG!

 Ask the children:

l How does a frog move? Get them toact this out hopping around the room!

l  What noise does a frog make and getthem to make a frog sound.

l  What do frogs eat?l  Where do frogs live?

More Activitiesl  Animal visit – go and see some real animals by organising a trip to a zoo or

farm where the children can see animals firsthand, watch them move, eat andlisten to the noises they make.

l

 Animal sounds – play a selection of animal calls and noises to the children andsee if they can guess which animal is making the sound.l Lily pad leap – cut out some large lily pad templates from craft paper. Place the

lily pads around and across the room and then challenge the children to getfrom one side of the room to the other using only the lily pads, they can’t stepon the ground at all!

Cooking up Mischief Time! Jemima Puddle-Duck Biscuits Jemima Puddle-duck wants to make a nest

in a quiet place, away from the farmyard, tohatch her own eggs. A charming foxy-whiskered gentleman offers her a safe placeto hatch her eggs but his intentions are not quite as innocent as they seem and ittakes a friendly Collie Kep, to rescue poor Jemima!

Follow the simple recipe below to make your very own Jemima Puddle-duckegg biscuits.

 What you will need:

l  225g self-raising flour

l  A pinch of saltl  150g butter chopped into small

squares

l  100g sugar

l  1 egg

l  Tubes of coloured icing/icingpens

 What to do:

l Preheat the oven to 180oC, gas

mark 4.l Sift the flour and salt into a bowl.l Rub in the butter squares.l  Add the sugar and mix in with

the flour and butter.l  Add one egg and bring the

mixture into a dough.l Knead the dough on a floured

board until smooth.l

Place in polythene bag or foil andchill for 30 minutes.l Roll the dough out onto a floured board until it is about 1cm thick.l Use an egg shaped cutter or a card template to cut the dough into egg shapes.l Bake for 12-15 minutes.l Finally, decorate the biscuits using different coloured icing and enjoy!

Peter’s Tip: Before anycooking or food preparation,remind the children to washtheir hands, roll up theirsleeves and put on an apron!

Peter’s Tip: You could makethe biscuits before thechildren arrive and thenallow them to decorate themand take them home.

Cooking up Mischief with Peter RabbitTM is a specially created programme toencourage children to engage with the world around them through fun and creative

cooking, growing and craft activities using the characters and tales of Beatrix Potter. We have been learning all about animals with Mr. Jeremy Fisher and Jemima Puddle-duck.

Cook up some mischief in your kitchen by trying out the tasty recipe below with your children.

Mr. Jeremy Fisher and Jemima Puddle-Duck’s Mini Pizzas

Ingredients:l  2 English muffins

l  2 tsp olive oil

l  2 tbsp tomato puree

l  1 tbsp water

l  50g mozzarella or grated cheddar

l  Selection of pizza toppings such as chopped peppers,courgette, tomato, sweetcorn, mushrooms and ham.

 What to do:

l Heat the olive oil for a few minutes andstir in the tomato puree and water,then remove from the heat.

l Split the muffins and toast.l Spread the tomato sauce over the muffins

and add your chosen toppings.l Place the mozzarella or grated cheese over

the topping.l Place the pizzas under the grill for

 4 minutes until the cheese isbubbling and golden.l  Allow to cool slightly before serving.
