This mathematics practice book for M.4 has been developed for English reading skills, with learning contents. It is aimed at guiding students and directing

students to obtain the essential knowledge for reading mathematics skill. The content knowledge including Simplifying Fractions, Prime or Composite?, Exponential Notation, and Converting Fractions to Decimals are also focused on.

The teaching and learning guidelines presented in this practice book lend the

characteristic of learning development through mathematical processes. The focus on conceptual development using mathematics content linked to reading skill development and using mathematical processes in answering the questions from

reading. This mathematics practice book consists of 4 units. The contents are introduced with some revision and linkages with the existing understanding so that

the students would systematically learn. Teachers should also provide additional exercises to further develop students’ skills.

In addition to supporting students in the content knowledge state in the reading skill, this mathematics practice book also helps promote students to have sufficient knowledge in mathematics reading, while developing the ability to use

mathematics as a tool for learning and studying higher levels of mathematics.

Prime Numbers and Composite Numbers

A Prime Number can be divided evenly only by 1 or itself. And it must be a whole number greater than 1. Example: 7 can only be divided evenly by 1 or 7, so it is a prime number. But 6 can be divided evenly by 1, 2, 3 and 6 so it is NOT a prime number (it is a composite number).

Some whole numbers can be divided up evenly, and some can't! Example: 6 can be divided evenly by 2, or by 3:

6 = 2 × 3 Like this: But 7 cannot be divided up evenly:

And we give them names: When a number can be divided up evenly it is a Composite Number

When a number can not be divided up evenly it is a Prime Number So 6 is Composite, but 7 is Prime.

And that explains it ... but there are some more details ... Not Into Fractions We are only dealing with whole numbers here! We are not going to cut things into halves or quarters. Not Into Groups of 1 OK, we could have divided 7 into seven 1s (or one 7) like this:

But we could do that for any whole number! So we should also say we are not interested in dividing by 1, or by the number itself.

It is a Prime Number when it can't be divided evenly by any number (except 1 or itself).

Example: is 7 a Prime Number or Composite Number? We cannot divide 7 evenly by 2 (you would get 2 lots of 3, with one left over)

We cannot divide 7 evenly by 3 (you would get 3 lots of 2, with one left over)

We cannot divide 7 evenly by 4, or 5, or 6. We can only divide 7 into one group of 7 (or seven groups of 1):

7 = 1 x 7

7 = 1 x 7



So 7 can only be divided evenly by 1 or itself: So 7 is a Prime Number And also:

It is a Composite Number when it can be divided evenly by numbers other than 1 or itself.

Like this: Example: is 6 a Prime Number or Composite Number? 6 can be divided evenly by 2, or by 3, as well as by 1 or 6:

6 = 1 × 6 6 = 2 × 3

So 6 is a Composite Number Sometimes a number can be divided evenly many ways: Example: 12 can be divided evenly by 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12:

1 × 12 = 12 2 × 6 = 12 3 × 4 = 12

So 12 is a Composite Number And note this: Any whole number greater than 1 is either Prime or Composite What About 1? Years ago 1 was included as a Prime, but now it is not: 1 is neither Prime nor Composite. Factors We can also define a Prime Number using factors.

"Factors" are numbers we multiply together to get another number.

And we have: When the only two factors of a number are 1 and the number,

then it is a Prime Number It means the same as our previous definition, just stated using factors. And remember this is only about Whole Numbers (1, 2, 3, ... etc), not fractions or negative numbers. So don't say "I could multiply ½ times 6 to get 3" OK?

Why All the Fuss about Prime and Composite? Because we can "break apart" Composite Numbers into Prime Number

factors.

Here we see it in action:

2 is Prime, 3 is Prime, 4 is Composite (=2×2), 5 is Prime, and so on...

Example: 12 is made by multiplying the prime numbers 2, 2 and 3 together.

12 = 2 × 2 × 3 The number 2 was repeated, which is OK. In fact we can write it like this using the exponent of 2:

12 = 22 × 3 And that is why they are called "Composite" Numbers because composite means "something made by combining things" This idea is so important it is called The Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic. There are many puzzles in mathematics that can be solved more easily when you "break up" the Composite Numbers into their Prime Number factors. A lot of internet security is based on mathematics using prime numbers.

It is like the Prime Numbers are the basic building blocks of all numbers. And the Composite Numbers are made up of Prime Numbers multiplied together.

Write the letter of the correct match next to each word.

It’s not always easy to determine whether a number is a prime number or a composite number. One way you can figure it out is to make a list of all the factors of that number. The only factors of a prime number is 1 and itself. If a number has any

additional factors then it is a composite number. Let’s look at an example of a composite number. The number 12 is a composite number because it has several different factors.

A good way to find the factors of a number is to start with the number 1 and

work your way up. Ask yourself whether there is a way to get 12 as an answer by multiplying a number times 1. Since 1 x 12 =12, both 1 and 12 are factors of 12. Move on to the number 2. Ask yourself if there is a way to get 12 as an answer by multiplying a number times 2. Since 2 x 6

=12, both 2 and 6 are factors of 12. At this point, we already know that 12 is a composite number because it has more factors than just 1 and 12, but let’s continue to figure out the rest of the factors of 12. We just used 2, so next is 3. Is there a way to get 12 as an answer by multiplying a number times 3? Since 3 x 4 =12, both 3 and 4 are factors of 12. The next number would

be 4, but we already used it in 3 x 4. As soon as you get a factor that was already used, you know you can stop looking for factors. So in our example, we can now list out all the factors of 12 that we discovered: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12.



Another technique for deciding if a number is prime or composite is to use tiles to make arrays. Count out the number of tiles for your number. In the example above, you would count 12 tiles for the number 12. Put the tiles into

equal rows. Look at the dimensions of the rows that come out evenly.

For example, you might have four rows with three in each row. Your array represents 4 x 3 = 12. For all the arrays that come out evenly, you can use the number of rows and the number of tiles in each row as factors on your list of factors. Like the

fi rst technique above, numbers that have just one and themselves on their list of factors are prime numbers. Those that have additional factors are composite numbers. The prime factorization of a number is a multiplication sentence that

shows a number as the product of only prime numbers. You can use a factor tree to find a number’s prime

factorization. Let’s look at 12 again. One way to make 12 is 2 x 6. The number 2 is already prime, so we move on to 6. 2 x 3 = 6. If we put them together we get: 2 x 2 x 3 = 12. Since there are two number 2s, we can write that part using an

exponent. The final prime factorization of 12 is 22x 3.
