BackgroundWith project ‘Maasroute’, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment is aiming to adjust the river Maas and to make it suitable for larger inland navigation. ‘Maasroute’ includes the construction of a two-way sluice in the Maas-Waal channel near the village of Heumen in the Netherlands. A field survey at the 8 ha project area revealed one main badgersett with four badgers and two annex/subsidiary setts. The project area mainly consists of primary foraginghabitat.
Badgers and Dutch lawIn the Netherlands badgers are protected by the Flora and Fauna Act. It is possible to deviate from the provisions of certain prohibitions if doing so does not affect the preservation of the species unfavorably. The present case therefore asked for large scale compensation measures to ensure a long term sustainable habitat for the local badger group. In order to meet the ecological and juridical requirements, a high quality habitat was created nearby the project area, to provide the badgers with shelter, safety and foraging grounds.
