Chronology of Events: Central Banking in
the Philippines1900 Act No. 52 was passed by the First Philippine Commission
placing all banks under the Bureau of reasury. he !nsular reasurer was authori"ed to super#ise and e$amine banksand banking acti#ities.
February 1929 he Bureau of Banking under the &epartment of Financetook o#er the task of banking super#ision.
1939 A bill establishing a central bank was drafted by 'ecretary
of Finance (anuel )o$as and appro#ed by the Philippine
*egislature. +owe#er, the bill was returned by the -'
go#ernment, without action, to the Commonwealth
o#ernment.
1946 A /oint Philippine0American Finance Commission wascreated to study the Philippine currency and bankingsystem. he Commission recommended the reform of themonetary system, the formation of a central bank and theregulation of money and credit.
he charter of the Central Bank of uatemala was chosenas the model of the proposed central bank charter.

make the CBP more responsi#e to changing economicconditions.
P& No. :2 emphasi"ed the maintenance of domestic andinternational monetary stability as the primary ob/ecti#e ofthe CBP. (oreo#er, the CBPs authority was e$panded toinclude not only the super#ision of the banking system butalso the regulation of the entire 3nancial system.
