Alexandre Da Costa Biography
Sony Classical artist and winner of the 2012 Juno Award, Alexandre Da
Costa was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He showed an
uncommon interest for both the violin and piano at a very early age.
By the age of nine, he had the astonishing ability to perform his first
concerts with stunning virtuosity on both instruments, which brought
him recognition as a musical prodigy. His chosen professional career
as a violinist began very early and, after encouragement from Charles
Dutoit, he was soon performing regularly as soloist with orchestra as
well as in recital.
At age 18, he obtained a Master’s Degree in violin and a First Prize
from the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec. Concurrently, he also
obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Interpretation from the
University of Montreal. Subsequently, encouraged to choose one
instrument, he studied in Madrid at the Escuela Superior de Musica
Reina Sofia with a legendary violin teacher who became his mentor,
Zakhar Bron (whose previous students famously include the likes of
Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin). He later pursued post-graduate
studies at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst of Vienna,
Austria, with G. Schulz, C. Altenburger and R. Honeck, and is currently
completing a research PhD. Among the many other prizes that
followed were the Sylva Gelber Foundation Award from the Canada
Council for the Arts, and in 2003 the Council’s Musical Instrument Bank
decided to go further and award him the “1689 Baumgartner
Stradivarius”. In 2010, he received the prestigious Virginia-Parker Prize,
one of Canada’s highest cultural distinctions.
Winner of many national and international first prizes, including the
International Violin Competition Pablo Sarasate, Alexandre Da Costa
has given close to two thousand concerts and recitals throughout the
Americas, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. He has performed in
the major halls of Vienna (Musikverein), Berlin (Philharmonie), New York
(Carnegie Hall), Beijing (Poly-Theater) and beyond. He has played
6
and recorded as guest soloist with more than 100 different
orchestras including London’s Royal Philharmonic, the Vienna,
Berlin, Montreal and Toronto Symphony Orchestras, the Dresden,
Bergen, Buffalo and Prague Philharmonic Orchestras, the BBC
Concert Orchestra, the National Radio & Television Symphony of
Spain, the YOA Orchestra of the Americas and many more.
Conductors he has played under include Rafael Frühbeck de
Burgos, Leonard Slatkin, Lorin Maazel, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Tugan
Sokhiev, Vasily Petrenko, Matthias Bamert, John Axelrod, Johannes
Wildner and Peter Oundjian. His live performance broadcasts have
aired on BBC, Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), CBC, NPR, ORF and
many others. Da Costa has given world premieres of works by Elliott
Carter, Michael Daugherty, Lorenzo Palomo, Jean Lesage and
Airat Ichmouratov. Alexandre Da Costa is also active as a
chamber musician and recently has recorded the complete
Brahms sonatas, alongside pianist Wonny Song. Da Costa has
performed alongside acclaimed chamber musicians such as
Menahem Pressler, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Matt Haimowitz and
Hélène Mercier.
As a recording artist, he has recorded 25 albums with various labels
such as, Sony Classical, Warner Classics, JVC/Victor, Naxos, Acacia
Classics/Universal, ATMA, XXI-21 and Octave/Universal, among
them the world premiere recordings of the Violin Concertos by
Portuguese composers Luis de Freitas Branco and Armando José
Fernandes. In 2012, he won the JUNO award for “Classical Album
of the Year” for his recording of the concertos by American
composer Michael Daugherty, with the Montreal Symphony under
Pedro Halffter for Warner Classics. The Washington Post selected his
recording of the Beethoven concerto with Klezmer cadenzas by A.
Ichmouratov as CD of the Year. He now records for Spectra and
Sony Classical. His latest release Stradivarius at the Opera,
recorded with the Vienna Symphony, quickly attained the best-
seller status, and was converted into a multimedia concert
booked around the world.
Alexandre Da Costa is Music Director of both the Acacia
Ensemble (Canada) and the Indian Ocean Ensemble (Australia).
He also regularly performs as guest soloist and conductor (Play &
Conduct) with ensembles such as the Queen Sofia Chamber
Orchestra, the “Virtuosos de Venezuela” Symphony and the
Vienna Symphony (Wiener Symphoniker).
In addition to his soloist activities, Alexandre Da Costa is Associate
Professor and Head of Strings at the Edith Cowan University and
regularly gives masterclasses at various universities and
conservatories around the world. Institutions he visited include the
Sydney Conservatorium, the University of Toronto and the Superior
Conservatories of Montreal, Madrid and Shanghai. He also served
as benchmarking consultant for the Hong Kong Academy for
Performing Arts, and guest speaker for TEDx. As Concertmaster,
he regularly leads orchestras such as the Wiener Symphoniker,
the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse and the Singapore
Symphony, under conductors such as Philippe Jordan, Tugan
Sokhiev, Günter Herbig and Lorin Maazel. He currently holds the
position of Artistic Director of the Laurentians Classical Festival of
Canada and Artistic Director at Acacia Classics Productions.
Alexandre Da Costa plays a Stradivarius of 1701 on long-term
loan by the “Château du Lac Sacacomie”.

Musical Development Director of Canimex,
Canada’s largest private collection of rare
stringed instruments, for nearly a decade and
evaluated during his tenure hundreds of famous
and valuable rare violins made between the 16th

one of the few experts in this narrow field.

Since Charles Dutoit discovered him at age 14, Alexandre Da
Costa has given nearly 2000 concerts as guest soloist with
some of the most prestigious orchestras on the globe. He has
worked with iconic figures such as the late Menuhin, Maazel
and Fruhbeck de Burgos, and young superstars such as Nézet-
Séguin, Petrenko and de la Parra. His list of repertoire covers all
the basic concertos, numerous rare works as well as new
music. He is considered as an expert for some of the most
important milestones of the violin repertoire, thanks to his 150+
performances of the Tchaikovsky concerto, 100+
performances of the Bruch, Beethoven and Sibelius concertos,
and his unique angle in the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole, which
he performed all over the world. Da Costa is a true soloist,
capable of maintaining a real soloist schedule, with hundreds
of concerts per year, dozens of concertos, and orchestras on
four continents. Although Da Costa is always enlarging his
reach by programming “play & conduct” concerts, chamber
music collaborations, recitals and other special projects,
Alexandre will always consider his work as guest soloist as his
main and natural environment.
World Premieres Premiering new works means a lot to Alexandre. Over the
years, he has been given the opportunity and privilege to
premiere works by Elliott Carter (US), Michael Daugherty (US),
Lorenzo Palomo (Spain), Jean Lesage (Canada), Airat
Ichmouratov (Russia), Frédéric Chiasson (Canada) and Paul
Sarcich (Australia).

Having worked with some of the greatest artists such as Rafael Frühbeck de
Burgos, Yehudi Menuhin, Lorin Maazel, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Elisabeth
Leonskaja, Menahem Pressler and many more, Alexandre Da Costa has
been developing his art at the highest level of music making alongside
those legendary musicians. Such musical opportunities have allowed him to
evolve organically through the different steps and leading roles in classical
music as he gave thousands of concerts as guest soloist, leader,
concertmaster, Stehgeiger and conductor, with some of the best orchestras
in the world.
Alexandre is now offering unique symphonic concert programs, combining
all three roles of conductor, soloist and leader. The repertoire he offers
ranges from full symphony orchestra works such as Wagner & Sibelius
Overtures and Brahms & Beethoven Symphonies, to Violin concertos by
Bruch, Mozart & Beethoven. In a single concert, the audience can
experience the orchestra led by Da Costa from the conductor’s podium,

Alexandre Da Costa presents the most famous violin
concertos ever composed: the Vivaldi Four Seasons. Da
Costa's version, which he had recorded with the Vienna
Symphony in 2005, has been hailed one of the most interesting
and refreshing currently available on the music scene.
Da Costa, one of the very few solo violinists considered as a
Latin music expert, pairs the Vivaldi Seasons with Astor
Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, a cross-over piece
that mixes the Argentinian tango master's vision with the
famous baroque masterworks. Piazzolla's unique cycle will

Alexandre Da Costa invites you to Vienna to a unique concert program that
includes most of the favorite Viennese repertoire by Strauss, Lehar and Kreisler, such
as the Blue Danube and Emperor Waltzes, the Tritsch Tratsch Polka and the Radetzky
March: A concert full of grace that will charm any audience. While living in Vienna,
Alexandre recorded several albums with the best Viennese musicians and
orchestras as guest soloist and leader. He is recognized as being heavily influenced
by the Austrian way of making music. A recent collaboration with the world-famous
Canadian Army 22nd Regiment Symphonic Band gave birth to a recording and
touring project that wishes to offer a new version of the Viennese repertoire, one
that bridges the Austrian sound and aesthetic to the military musical tradition.

culture, particularly through the music of Albéniz,
Falla, Granados and Sarasate, and the poetry of
García Lorca. Together with Poet and Author

plunging the audience in a world of flamenco,
bull fighting, romance and pride. It was

Some of the most hypnotizing masterpieces ever written for the violin belong to the Baroque
Era. Bach, Tartini and Vitali wrote some of the most famous works (Chaconnes, The Devil’s Trill,
etc.). Alexandre Da Costa commissioned composers Frédéric Chiasson (Canada), Leonard
Madden (Australia), Bobby Cyr (Canada) and Paul Sarcich (Australia/UK) to write extended
& accompanied versions of this repertoire and program. These works have been premiered
in Australia and Canada, and are received with rave reviews whenever performed.

Maegis Arts
Created in 2006, Maegis Arts is a dynamic
division of Maegis Group. It was originally
established for the purpose of producing
international orchestral concert tours in China
featuring solo violinist Alexandre Da Costa.
Over a period of ten years, it co-produced a
number of concert tours across China (totaling
about 40 concerts) featuring solo violinist
Alexandre Da Costa alongside different
international orchestras.
In 2016, it was revamped to encompass a
much wider range of products and services,
as well as a much wider geographic area. It
now aims to become a major provider of
international cultural productions, advanced
music education services, as well as rare violins
in Asia. To that purpose, it was reorganized
into three business units to better focus on
specific product offerings and market
segments, namely: an International Cultural
Productions business unit, an Advanced Music
Education Services business unit, and a Rare
Violins business unit.
The International Cultural Productions
business unit aims at developing the
sales of a broad scope of classical
and contemporary music concerts
and tours, international cultural public
events, as well as the licensing
of international TV content.

The Advanced Music Education Services
business unit aims at developing the
sales of music education related
activities such as conferences, workshops and masterclasses.
