Director’s Statement

I am a Director was adapted with the idea of satirizing the behavior of Puerto Rican filmmakers, with respect to Hollywood and their visión of making movies. It’s a comedy that, in my opinión, criticizes the current film-making climate on the island: the bad judgments, the poor investments and the idea that a movie can not sell if it’s not in English.

I am a Director is a film that I have been working on since my years of study at the American Film Institute in Los Ángeles. The original script started as 2 US film-makers trying to make a movie and I ended up adapting it to Puerto Rico. I shot the first ten minutes with the idea of developing it as an internet series, but the results were so great that I translated the entire script and began pre-production on a full-length feature film.

Thanks to my previous works, De Pura Cepa and Es Mejor Escucharlo, we had the opportunity of working with a great cast and an excellent crew that from the beginning of production gave 100%.

I am a Director se hizo con la idea de satirizar la visión de muchos cineastas de Puerto Rico con respecto a Hollywood y a nuestro cine. Es una comedia en donde, a mi juicio, trabajamos la realidad del cine puertorriqueño, una película con la que todos los cineastas se pueden identificar, y que el público puede disfrutar.

I am a Director es una crítica que llevo trabajando desde mis años de estudios en el American Film Insti-tute en Los Ángeles. El guión empezó con dos esta-dounidenses tratando de hacer una película, y terminé adaptándalo para Puerto Rico. Tuve la oportunidad de grabar los primeros 10 minutos con la idea de desarrollar una serie para el Internet, y el resultado fue tan bueno que decidí traducir todo el guión.

Entiendo que como cineasta y profesional, he madurado gracias a mis trabajos previos De Pura Cepa y Es Mejor Escucharlo. Gracias a ello tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con un gran elenco y una excelente ficha técnica que desde el principio estuvo cien porciento integrada en el proceso de nuestra producción.

I am a Director tells the story of Carlos, a young 33 year-old filmmaker who since he was little knew his dream: make a “Hollywood style” movie.

The story begins with Carlos returning to Puerto Rico with his friend and producer Joa after living 5 years in Hollywood. It is then they decide to make their first full-length feature film. With no experience and no idea how to make a film, Carlos y Joa begin their dream of making a “Hollywood style” movie, and most importantly, in Eng-lish so the movie can be “exported.” At the same time, they are followed by a documentary team that will be with them through-out the entire process. It is in this way that we witness their journey.

The road is not easy. They have to deal with the pres-sure of raising the money, looking for english-speaking actors, and the lack of experience in their crew. Not to mention, everything gets complicated when Carlos meets Marisé, a young actress of whom Carlos falls in love. Joa becomes jealous and the emotions affect their friendship and the production. Everything climaxes on the first day of shooting where Carlos plans to demon-strate his talent, but during the shoot, he realizes that filmmaking isn’t the only important thing in life, possibly losing a friend is much more important.

I am a Director narra la historia de Carlos, un joven de 33 años, quien desde muy pequeño sabía cuál era su sueño: hacer una película al estilo Hollywood.

La historia comienza cuando regresa a su país natal, Puerto Rico, junto a su amiga y productora, Joa, luego de vivir 5 años en Hollywood. Es aquí donde deciden que es el momento de rodar su primer largometraje. Sin experiencia y sin ninguna idea de cómo hacer cine, Carlos y Joa comienzan con su sueño de hacer una película al estilo Hollywood y lo más importante en inglés para poder exportarla. Al mismo tiempo, son filmados para un documental por otro director de cine que estará junto a ellos durante todo el proceso. De esta forma seremos testigos de la ruta que toman Carlos y Joa.

El camino no se les hace fácil. Tienen que lidiar con la presión de conseguir el dinero, actores que hablen bien inglés, el crew y su propia falta de experiencia. Todo se complica cuando Carlos conoce a Marisé, una joven actriz de la que Carlos queda enamorado al saber que habla inglés. Joa comienza a sentir celos tanto person-ales como profesionales. Todo culmina con la llegada del día de filmación, donde Carlos va a demostrar todo su talento, pero durante ese día se da cuenta que hacer cine no es lo único importante en la vida, sino que el perder a una amiga es importante también.

Javier Colón Ríos have a Master in Film Directing from the American Film Institute (AFI). While living Los Ange-les, Colón worked on numerous projects as camera operator, editor, P.A., and of course, director.

Once there he had the opportunity to work in Ventana Azul, Salma Hayek’s film company, where he collabo-rated in the area of development. On the meantime, he finished his thesis film De Pura Cepa a short film that got recognitions in festivals around the world, including winning Best Foreign Short at the Big Island Film Festi-val in Hawaii. After gaining experience in Los Angeles he decided that it was time to go back to Puerto Rico.

Now in his country, Javier Colón has directed and produced numerous music videos, commercials, docu-mentaries and now is working on features films. In May 2010, he wrote and directed Es Mejor Escucharlo, his first short film in Puerto Rico. This movie also has won numerous prizes including the Silver Palm Award in the Mexico International Film Festival and most recently was accepted in the Cannes, Film Festival in the Short Film Corner, where the film got acquired for distribution by Shorts International.

After doing numerous short films, he decided that it was time to move on, so he wrote, produced and directed his first feature film, I AM A DIRECTOR.

Javier Colón Ríos posee una maestría en Dirección de Cine del American Film Institute (AFI). Mientras vivió en Los Ángeles, Colón trabajó en numerosos proyectos como operador de cámara, editor, AP, y por supuesto, director.

Una vez allí, tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar en la com-pañía cinematográfica de la actriz y directora Salma Hayek, Ventana Azul, donde colaboró en el área de desarrollo. En el ínterin, él terminó su película de tesis De Pura Cepa, un cortometraje que obtuvo recono-cimientos en festivales de todo el mundo, incluyendo Mejor Corto Extranjero en el Festival de Cine de la Isla Grande de Hawaii. Tras adquirir experiencia en Los Ángeles decidió que era hora de regresar a Puerto Rico.

Ahora en su país, Javier Colón ha dirigido y producido numerosos videos musicales, comerciales, documen-tales y largometrajes. En mayo 2010, escribió y dirigió Es Mejor Escucharlo, su primer cortometraje en Puerto Rico. Esta película también ha ganado numerosos premios, incluyendo el Silver Palm Award en el Festival Internacional de Cine de México y más recientemente fue aceptado en el Festival de Cine de Cannes en el Short Film Corner, donde se adquirió la película para su distribución por Shorts International.

Después de hacer varios cortometrajes, decidió que era hora de seguir adelante, por lo que escribió, produjo y dirigió su primer largometraje, I AM A DIRECTOR.

Carlos Marchand is part of the new stock of young actors in Puerto Rico. In 2003, he was part of the first Puerto Rican Match Amateur of Teatro Deportivo, and at the same time a founding member of La Liga Puertorriqueña de Improv-isación Teatral. He represented the ladder, LIPIT, in the first World Improvisational Spanish Theater in Mexico City (2004). In 2007, the company presented a produc-tion titled “Quimera” in which Carlos himself co-directed and co-wrote. He has also participated in professional productions such as “Marianela” and “Un número”.

Carlos has also dived into local film productions. His latest short-film lead, “Es mejor Escucharlo”, won multi-ple awards at various international festivals. Among his other professional works are “Mañana en el café”, “Sonríe” and “29 de mayo”, as well as some US produc-tions such as “The Company” and “The Argentine”.

On television, he was a principal piece of a Telemundo show called “Noticreo”, which won 2 Emmy awards, and has also participated in US shows such as “Royal Pains” and “Angels and Diamonds”. At the commercial level, he has done TV and radio campaigns for: Direct TV, McDonald’s, Sprint, Centennial, Walgreens, Radio Shack, Cerveza Polar, Honda, T-Mobile, Zion, Taco Bell, Pearl Vision, Home Depot, and Wendy’s.

En el 2003 formó parte del 1er Match Amateur en Puerto Rico del Teatro Deportivo, siendo a su vez miembro fundador de la Liga Puertorriqueña de Improv-isación Teatral. Representó a LIPIT en el Primer Mun-dial de Improvisación Teatral en Español en Ciudad de México (2004). En el 2007 esta misma compañía, presentó una producción titulada “Quimera” en la que Carlos se destacó como co director y co escritor. Asi-mismo, ha participado de producciones profesionales como “Marianela” y “Un número”.

Igualmente, ha sido parte de producciones cinematográficas locales, como lo fue su último cortometraje ganador de múltiples premios a nivel inter-nacional, “Es mejor Escucharlo” del director Javier Colón. Entre otros trabajos se destacan “Mañana en el café”, “Sonríe” y “29 de mayo”, al igual que las produc-ciones norteamericanas como “The company” y “The Argentine”.

En TV trabajó en el programa llamado “Noticreo” trans-mitido en Telemundo, el cual ganó dos premios EMMYS, además de las series estadounidenses “Royals Pains” y “Angels and Diamonds”. Raised in Puerto Rico and of Cuban/Colombian descent, she study Performing Arts at The New York Univeristy Tisch School of the Arts. After two years, she continued her studies at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón where she earned her B.A. in Multi-Disciplinary Arts with a concentration in Theater, Journalism and Foreign Languages.

In theater, she was recently recognized for being selected for a Master Class with the Oscar-winning actor/director Tim Robbins at the XXIII Festival Iber-oamericano de Teatro de Bogotá. She is part of the theater troupe ADN-r, a performance company in which she acts and produces. Within her resume are more than 20 theater pieces such as “Las confesiones de Miñi,” “The Outsiders”, “La Charca”, musicals like “La canción verde” and “Los desertores”, and also a remake of “The runaways”.

In film, she is the female-lead of the movie “I AM A DIRECTOR”, in which she was awarded at the Rincon Film Festival for “Best Actress in a Feature Film”. At the same festival, she also won “Best Actress in a Short Film” for her part in “Jessika” and also played a small role in the Short film “Dream of Vermilion”, which was accepted into the HBO New York Latino Film Festival.

On television, she has participated in series such as USA Network’s “Royal Pains” and a Lifetime Network original movie “Stranded.” Joa is also a radio and televi-sion voice. You can hear her on the radio at Radio Joe 106.1 FM.

De ascendencia cubano colombiana y criada en Puerto Rico, estudió Performing Arts en el Lee Strasberg Thea-tre Institute en el New York Univeristy Tisch School of the Arts. Luego de dos años pasó a la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón donde obtuvo un B.A. en Artes Multi-disciplinarias.

En teatro, fue seleccionada por el reconocido actor/director americano ganador del Oscar Tim Robbins para entrenarse bajo su dirección en un Master Class para sólo 10 actores en el XXIII Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro de Bogotá. Es parte del colectivo teatral ADN-r, una compañía de performance donde actúa y produce. En su resumé existen más de 20 obras como “Las con-fesiones de Miñi” de Luis López Nieves, “The Outsid-ers”, “La Charca”, entre muchas otras.
