‘Pretty difficult’ es una muestra conjunta de los artistas Alby Álamo y José Otero (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1977 y 1979, respectivamente). Formados en la misma universidad y residentes desde hace años en Berlín, presentan una propuesta que destaca por la heterogeneidad de sus obras. Sin embargo, las líneas de apertura interpretativa que convocan responden a un fuerte nexo soterrado; la pregunta sobre los fundamentos de recepción de la imagen bidimensional.
Alby Álamo (www.albyalamo.com) centra su trabajo, tanto pictórico como de video, en el cuestionamiento de las herramientas narrativas visuales, en el cómo se articulan los mecanismos del lenguaje para ofrecer un sentido concreto, haciéndonos conscientes así de la manipulación, tanto en la propia imagen como de la imagen hacia nosotros. Con una desnudez plástica intencional, la mayor parte de trabajos de Álamo vienen llenos de trampas de significado- por decirlo así, tienen truco- obstáculos para que el espectador activo piense abriendo los ojos, con referencias que provienen tanto de la tradición pictórica como de la cultura visual contemporánea. Los gestos de Álamo son de base, ligeros de forma y rotundos en contenido; la imagen siempre aparece como una cosa que no es.
José Otero (www.joseotero.com) por su parte deja arrastrarse por un flujo pictórico casi impredecible, incómodo para la mirada más adocenada que busca “fórmulas” o “soluciones” visuales. Sitúa al espectador ante un proceso abierto en donde las imágenes se interrelacionan entre sí de una manera poética, luminosa y colorista pero frecuentemente hermética. Los lazos entre cuadros, tanto en estilo como en el contenido, parecen ocultarse o haber sido dinamitados ex profeso. El resultado conjunto ordenado en el tiempo parece apuntar a una suerte de intento de fuga de la significación, acotado sin embargo dentro de las fronteras de la pintura, un lugar en donde cada ínfimo gesto está consciente o inconscientemente connotado.
‘Pretty difficult’ is a joint exhibition by the artists Alby Álamo and José Otero (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1977 and 1979 respectively). Having studied at the same university and resided for years in Berlin, their proposal emphasizes the heterogeneous nature of their work. Despite the wide range of interpretations that they allow, they strongly converge in the same underlying question: the fundamental principles involved in the reception of the two dimensional image.
The focus of Alby Álamo´s work (www.albyalamo.com), both pictorial and video, is on the tools employed to establish visual narratives, on how the mechanisms of language work in order to offer a specific meaning, making us aware of the implicit manipulation that takes place, not only in the image itself but also by the image upon us. The bareness of his technique is intentional and is in contrast with the abundance of traps concerning the meaning of its content, of tricks, as it where, obstacles which make the active spectator think whilst opening his eyes, with references to the pictorial tradition and to contemporary visual culture. Álamo´s strokes are light in format, but solid in meaning; the image always appears to be what it is not.
José Otero (www.joseotero.com), on the other hand, abandons himself to a pictorial flow which is nearly unpredictable, uncomfortable to the mediocre observer who looks for “formulas” or visual “solutions”. He confronts the spectator to an open process where images interrelate in a poetic, luminous and colourful manner, though often hermetic. The connections between paintings, both in style and content, seem to hide or have been hidden on purpose. The resultant collection organized through time, seems to indicate an attempt to flee from meaning, whilst at the same time being contained within the framework of the pictorial tradition, in which the slightest gesture is permeated with conscious or unconscious significance.
