Executive Summary

The current report presents the accomplishments of Prince Salman Research & Translation Center (PSRTC) in the academic year 2013–2014. This is prepared with the aim of documenting these accomplishments, disseminating significant information to all concerned, and planning for the future based on solid data and realistic grounds. To this end, the report includes six main sections:

(1) PSRTC vision and mission (2) PSRTC accomplishments in points (3) PSRTC structure (4) Research accomplishments (5) Translation accomplishments (6) Perspective into the future.

In this executive summary, the reported accomplishments are briefly summarized. In the field of research, the Center has successfully worked on different fronts. First, in the area of research funding the Center has made significant progress. Six research proposals that were approved for funding by the University Council in 2012 – 2013 were implemented. Three projects have already been completed in 2013 - 2014, and the three others are to be fully submitted in the upcoming academic year 2014 - 2015. All completed projects have published in academic journals/ conferences and have received notably excellent feedback from external reviewers. In addition, the Center has received 38 new proposals for funding in 2013 – 2014. This figure shows an increase in applications by 80% since the submitted proposals in 2012 – 2013 was 21. The proposals underwent a rigorous review process internally and externally before being presented to the University Council, which approved 11 proposals until the time of publishing the current report. Moreover, the Center issued a call for the formation of research groups in PSU, and has received 11 applications from all colleges/ departments. The applications include 58 PSU and 39 non-PSU researchers. The applications are currently under process to be submitted to the University Council at the start of the academic year 2014 – 2015. Second, the Center has exerted tremendous efforts to enhance research among faculty members and students. The Center launched a series of specialized research forums covering all PSU colleges/ departments. Seven forums in the fields of Business Administration, Computer & Information Sciences, Engineering, Interior Design & Architecture, English Language Studies, Law and General Courses were held including a total of 93 research paper presentations and welcoming 1,247 participants including faculty members, students and guests from the community. The Forums offered an excellent platform to promote research, allow exchange of knowledge and enhance research collaboration. In addition, the Center offered diverse research training opportunities to faculty members and teaching assistants. The 12 training sessions offered at the present year covered research skills, research management and effective strategies to promote undergraduate research.

As for students, the Center launched its PSRTC Student Research Club which offered a diversity of innovative activities. The Club provided 17 research training sessions and 6 research sharing sessions to students that were attended by around 350 students. The Club also engaged 12 students in 3 real research projects under the supervision of faculty members at the Center’s research lab, and launched an anti-plagiarism campaign in which more than 300 faculty members and students participated. Besides, the Club organized two major research competitions for students; one for research papers and another for research posters. The Center received 20 research papers and 21 research posters in participation. The student research work was displayed on campus and awards were submitted to winning papers and posters. In addition to the Club activities, the Centre promoted the participation of undergraduate and postgraduate students in various national and international conferences, competitions and research programs. The Center supported the efforts of 52 students to participate at the 5th Scientific Conference for Higher Education, King Abdullah University for Science and Technology Poster Competition for Undergraduates, and King Abdullah University for Science and Technology Winter Enrichment Program. Finally, PSRTC has presented a number of initiatives in 2013 – 2014. One major initiative is a proposal to offer annual research excellence awards to faculty members, postgraduate students and undergraduate students starting the academic year 2014 – 2015. The awards have been approved by the University Council and executive procedures have been prepared. The Center also presented (1) a report on the effectiveness of the research databases available on campus in collaboration with the PSU Library, (2) examined the recommendation to establish a PSU institutional review board, (3) compiled the needs for establishing central research labs at the Men and Women campuses, (4) cooperated with the Law Department to devise a policy for intellectual property for PSU, (5) compiled lists of services by colleges/ departments to launch the Center’s reach-out initiative and (6) devised procedure for the establishment of research groups/ specialized research units. In the field of translation, the Center has established itself among the important translation centres in Saudi universities. The Center opened the year’s activities/ events with celebrating the International Translation Day on September 30th. The Celebration included 4 lectures and 2 panel discussions by 8 speakers, 4 of whom came from King Saud University and the Saudi Association for Languages and Translation. The Event was well attended with a total of 327 participants across the two campuses. In upcoming years, the Event will also include the distribution of Translation Excellence Awards to professional translators and undergraduate students based on a proposal which has been approved by the Rector. Application to the Awards will be open to all professional translators from around the world and to all undergraduate students in Saudi universities. The Center also launched a series of monthly translation seminars in the second academic semester. Three seminars were held in February, March and April and were attended by 280 participants. The seminar speakers for this academic year came from Princess Noura University, Imam Mohamed Bin Saud Islamic University, King Abdullah Institute for Translation & Arabization, and Prince Sultan University. Regarding undergraduate students, the Center established its Student Translation Club which offered an impressive array of activities. translation training workshops for students on literary translation, downloading videos & dubbing and correct Arabic language use. The Center also organized 7 sessions where professional translators from Prince Sultan University and King Saud University in addition to translation students from the PSU English Department shared their experience in translating books and articles. The Club also organized a field trip to King Abdullah Institute for Translation & Arabization which offered an excellent opportunity for participants to learn more about this significant translation centre and explore training and employment openings. In addition to the sessions and field trip, the Center organized two major translation competitions. The first was for PSU students and was held for a week on the translation of important English language expressions. Winners included 25 students from different departments. The second was a competition among 4 universities: Prince Sultan University, King Saud University, Imam Mohamed Bin Saud Islamic University, and Princess Noura University. The Event included three components; a written translation competition, interpretation competition and a student translation work display. The Event was extremely significant as it represented the first initiative to organize such translation competitions among undergraduate students in Saudi Arabia. Finally, the Center has continued to serve the University academic departments and administrative offices with translation/ editing services. The list of served departments/ offices in 2013–2014 include the Business Administration Department, the Deanship of Admission & Registration, the Deanship of Student Affairs, Prince Salman Center for Local Governance, the Community Service and International Relations Office, the Safety and Security Office, the Public Relations Office, the Information Technology Office, the Teaching and Learning Center, the Library and Taif Al-Jameaa Newsletter. In conclusion, PSRTC has managed to achieve significant accomplishments in the academic year 2013 – 2014 as detailed in the current report.
