LANDSI 2012
Background
The investigations undertaken simultaneously on land and marine coastal parts constitute a major value of the
integrated management of coastal areas. It is essential in the management of coastal areas to recognize how the
land-based activities affect the condition of the sea. The sea is impacted by events that can occur directly or
indirectly from the nearly area or away from the coast,– runoff including, sediment, nutrients, freshwater inputs,
river discharges, pollutants from telluric and atmospheric origin, deforestation... - all may affect the quality of
water from sea and coastal marine communities. On the other hand, the sea strongly affects terrestrial and
intertidal areas; this is the case of the accidental pollution, destruction from cyclonic storms, floods, actions of
waves, tsunamis and coastal erosion….
It is therefore essential to have a better understanding of the existing interactions between the use of the land
and marine coastal areas. It is important to understand these linkages because human health is closely linked to
the health of aquatic ecosystems, and the dynamics of these systems are expected to change with climate change.
The coastal areas are interesting to be understood due to their significant environmental changes that could affect
coastal ecosystems in their globally.
The conference aim to promote the sharing of experiences and tools between scientists and stakeholders so as to
better understand and manage systems which encompass the marine and land domains, together with the human
activities carried out therein and enhance a more effective control of anthropogenic and natural pressures..

LANDSI 2012
PREFACE
The International Conference on “Land-Sea Interactions in the Coastal Zone” (LANDSI 2012) was held in Jounieh (Lebanon) from 6 to 8 November 2012. The conference was organized by the Inter-Islamic Science & Technology Network on Oceanography (INOC) and the National Centre for Marine Sciences of the National Council for Scientific Research (NCMS/CNRS). It was programmed to be one of the activities of the CNRS on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. The venue conference was the Madisson Hotel, located in a beautiful area of Jounieh. LANDSI brought together almost 88 scientists and post graduate students from 17 countries.
It was the second time that the INOC scientific meetings were scheduled in Lebanon.
The conference was under the patronage of the Lebanese Minister of Environment H.E. Mr. Nazem El-Khoury.
The official opening of the conference was addressed by Dr. Gaby Khalaf, director of the National Center for Marine Sciences and by the President of INOC, Prof. Orhan Uslu, who thanked the Minister for his patronage, and organizers and formally opened the conference. This was followed by a welcoming statement from the Secretary General of the CNRS, Dr. Mouin Hamze, and the representative of the Minister of Environment’s, Mr. G. Sayyah, who wished the conference all the success and assured the participants of their continuous supports.
After a key note speech by Dr. G. Khalaf on the Lebanese project CANA, The following persons were invited to the Podium and were presented the medal of the CNRS in appreciation of their contributions to INOC, the CNRS and oceanography in general, Dr. Orhan Uslu, Dr. Abdelouahab Chouikhi, Executive Secretary of INOC and Dr. Hratch Kouyoumjian, President Scientific Committee of INOC, who thanked the CNRS on behalf of all the recipients of the medals.
More than 210 abstracts were submitted, out of which 176 were selected for oral and posters presentations. Unfortunately many of the participants have canceled their trip at the last moment due to the sudden deterioration of the security situation in Beirut.
These abstracts were organized in a Pdf in the format of the published Book of Abstracts, were made available at www.inoctr.org before the conference and distributed during the registration to the conference. Two parallel sessions were scheduled and the four plenary introductory themes featured reviews covering the full range of LANDSI topics. We gratefully thank the able chairpersons and rapporteurs of the various conference sessions and all speakers for their valuable contributions.
The scientific programme of LANDSI focused on:
1. Coastal habitats and ecosystem services (Importance of coastal habitats for fish stocks & biodiversity, goods and services of the coastal systems, indicators of coastal ecosystem health & sustainability, valuation of ecological qualities, indigenous value of coastal habitats, coastal geomorphology, coastal Processes and GIS).
2. Adaptation/mitigation to change in coastal systems (Terrigenous impacts on the biodiversity and marine environment, coastal tourism and urbanization, eutrophication and pollution, coastal erosion
vi
& sediment transport , invasive species, maritime transportation & ports, coastal renewable energy, impacts of the climate changes in coastal zones).
3. Coastal Management & Governance (Managing multiple resource and area uses, managing water resources ,linking watersheds and the coastal zone, linking coastal zone management and marine value creation , preserving cultural heritage and local coastal communities, multi-scale governance structures, involving stakeholders in coastal zone management, role of dissemination and public perception in coastal policies).
The conference period in mid autumn was blessed with warm and pleasant days and the participants enjoyed the excursion organized the last day to Jeita Grotto and the city of Byblos, one of the richest archaeological areas in Lebanon & the world and the top contenders for the oldest inhabited city award.
During LANDSI 2012, the executive committee of the Inter-Islamic Science and Technology Network on Oceanography was held, which reviewed future activities of the network. Thanks to the National Centre of Scientific Research, the president of the conference Prof. Hamze Mouin and the generous conference sponsors (IDB, AUF and LOICZ) for their contributions. These allowed to predoctoral students and experts to receive support to attend the conference.
The logistics of organizing this meeting were facilitated by the staff of National Centre for Marine Sciences; we would like to express our appreciation to them for their tireless work in the conference preparations, all who have contributed and have creating a friendly atmosphere.
