College of Nursing, B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) is a pioneer Nursing Campus in Nepal. It was initiated in 1993 A.D. In 1996 first time in Nepal Four years Generic Bachelor Nursing Programme (B. Sc. Nursing) was started with intake of 20 students. At Present in BPKIHS there is 3 years M. Sc. Nursing in all five specialty (Medical-Surgical, Psychiatric, Community Health, Maternal Health, Child Health), which is unique in world. Besides M. Sc. Nursing there are 4 years B. Sc. Nursing, Bachelor in Nursing (BN) and Certificate Nursing Programme. The PhD Programme is in pipeline.

INTRODUCTION: B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), established in 1993, is an autonomous Health Sciences University with the mandate to work towards developing socially responsible and competent health work force. Striving continuously to meet the health needs of the Eastern Region of Nepal in primary, secondary and tertiary levels is its primary responsibility.

University Campus: The University Campus has 699 acres of land. It has been divided into teaching hospital complex, residential complex, golf course, playgrounds and protected forest area.

Accommodation is provided to all faculty members, doctors, nursing staff, officers and other technical staff in the campus. The University has its own water supply system and backup power supply system.

Delhi Public School (CBSE base) is operating classes from nursing to 10+2. Children of faculty members and staff are given special privilege for admission to the school. The school has its own Governing Body.

VISION, MISSION AND GOALS OF BPKIHS VISION BPKIHS has been visualized as:

• A self-governing, self-reliant International Health Sciences University attracting students and teachers from all over the world to its constantly innovative educational programme.

• A national center for providing quality health services, tertiary as well as primary, and developing replicable and sustainable models of integrated health systems sensitive to the needs of both the individual and community living in urban as well as rural areas.

• A prestigious center for biomedical and health system research, and as a center of excellence for tropical and infectious diseases.

• A complete health development project through its teaching districts which will catalyze an environment-friendly human development initiative resulting in enhancement in the quality of life of the people of Nepal and, those working in BPKIHS to ensure a high level of commitment to excellence and dedication to service.

MISSION The main mission of BPKIHS is to improve the health status of the people of Nepal by providing holistic health care through training of compassionate, caring, communicative and socially accountable health workforce acting as agents of change and through advancement in research and innovation in service as well as education to ensure healthy individuals and families by collaborating with all stakeholders. GOALS Educational goals: In terms of achieving the educational goals of the institute both the present curricula and future educational programmes are to be need-based, integrated, community-oriented and partially problem solving in line with innovative medical education programmes epitomized in the Edinburgh Declaration of 1998. These are the basic tenets on which BPKIHS curricula are based. In the area of service delivery, this institute is committed to provide services not only to those coming to its teaching hospital but also to those who are not able to do so. This is, the institute does by reaching out to the community, which cannot reach the institute. The mountain must go to Mohammed if Mohammad doesn’t go to the mountain. Outreach services are an integral part of the commitment, which the institute has pledge to the legislators. It is not only reaching out to the sick in the community but active promotion of positive health and through it, improvement in the status of the community health that will serve as a measure of attainment of our services goals. The faculty at the BPKIHS is expected to monitor health indicators such as infant Mortality Rate, Crude Birth Rate,

Crude Death Rate, Blindness, Deafness and Disability rates etc. on an ongoing basis much in the same way as we monitor our individual patients in terms of established clinical parameters. Just we intervene with different modalities of treatment when our individual patients are not making satisfactory progress. Such monitoring of community health indicators by the departments constitutes an important element in the overall process of evaluation of the institute by internal and external evaluations. Research goals: In the field of research, high priority is accorded to the areas requiring greater attention to solve the existing and emerging health problems that are threatening the well being of large population groups through the use of multi-disciplinary, integrated and problem solving approach. Greater emphasis is placed on research, which will lead to application of available knowledge for the benefit of large number of people.

ADMINISTRATION:

The Chancellor of the University is Prime Minister of Nepal. The Pro-Chancellor and the Chairperson of the Governing Body of the University is Health Minister. The Governing Body has 25 members and it meets at least twice in a year for discussion regarding budgeting, policy matters etc. For executing day to day administration and monitoring of the University activities an Executive Committee is constituted which is chaired by the Vice Chancellor. He is overall executive head of the university. Rector is responsible for Academic Administration and Registrar for General Administration. Teaching Hospital is managed by the Hospital Director. Apart from the above Executives there is a Chief of Dental College for overall general administration of College of Dental Surgery. College of Nursing and School of Public Health also have same provision. Each department has a separate administrative team headed by the senior most faculty member.

All academic policy decisions have to be approved by the Academic Committee. In addition, there is a Research Committee for monitoring research activities which is mentioned earlier. The members of Academic Committee are drawn from eminent medical scientists from India & Nepal.

Apart from the departmental offices teaching learning and patients' service are supported by various sections namely- Academic Administration Division (including Examination Section), Finance Administration Division, Engineering Service Division (Civil, Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Electromed), Hospital Administration Division, Procurement, General Store, Personnel Administration & Planning Division, Medical Record Section and General Administration Section. Being a tertiary health care and teaching institution, different types of manpower is necessary for its operation and functioning. At present 1577 staff members are working and providing services in BPKIHS.

Academic programs of BPKIHS: Present strength of the students-2013 College of Nursing Nursing education covers a wide spectrum incorporating medical sciences, behavioral sciences, social sciences and managerial sciences, and at the same time involves hands – on experience as a major segment of the course. Hence the course consists of several parallel strands. The curriculum aims at thorough integration within each strand, and an attempt has been made to achieve integration between strands as well, to the extent possible. Besides being integrated the curriculum is community oriented partially community based, partially problem based and predominantly student centered.

The curricula have taken into consideration the health statistics and national health policy of Nepal. It is hoped that this thoroughly contemporary curriculum with a futuristic outlook will contribute towards producing nurses who are knowledgeable skilled and compassionate, while at the same time being equipped with leadership and teaching abilities such nurses should be able to fulfill an important lacuna in the human resources of Nepal in the health sector and make way for a better health scenario in the country.

Nursing is a practice profession with a defined body of knowledge and goals. Nursing makes a unique and valuable contribution within the health care system and society. The profession provides a social structure to develop legitimate professional roles for its members. The faculty of the School of Nursing recognize two interrelated aspects of professional practice: the art and the science of nursing. The art of nursing involves intuition, creativity, caring and application of nursing therapeutics, communication skills, and supportive interpersonal processes. These aesthetic considerations are integrated with knowledge from the natural and behavioral sciences through critical thinking and systematic investigation. Together the art and science of nursing provide insights for the profession in meeting its mission of providing for the health care needs of clients in home, community or institutional health care delivery settings. Fulfillment of this mission involves the use of the nursing process to promote and maintain health and wellness, prevent illness, diagnose and manage potential or actual health problems, facilitate adaptation to health impairments, assist rehabilitation, and maximize the opportunity for dignity in living and dying. Professional nurses recognize the contribution each individual makes to society and the necessity to consider the total person in nurse-client interactions. Further, they apply primary health care concepts in responding to needs of populations and communities consonant with available health care system resources. Nursing's mission is accomplished while taking into account the legal and ethical rights and responsibilities of client systems, other caregivers, and nurses, with full attention given to the influence of historical, political, social, cultural and economic factors. Leadership, collaboration, and consultation among nurses and other health care providers and support systems is critical in meeting client needs. Nursing

demonstrates its professional values and accomplishes its mission through research, education and practice. The faculty believe that nursing education, practice and research are inextricably intertwined. Through faculty practice contracts negotiated in primary, secondary and tertiary care settings, faculty provide expertise, model interdisciplinary collaboration for students, and create opportunities for research. Use of advanced information technology allows the extension of faculty expertise into rural communities. Faculty practice in the community further creates the opportunity for cultural encounter, a necessary experiential component of cultural competence. Practice in the community and in institutional settings makes apparent power relationships which affect access to care and may interfere with client systems' abilities to actively collaborate in their own health care. Faculty draw on these practice experiences in teaching students in all three programs.

In keeping with the mission of the University, the School of Nursing faculty also participate in service to the School, the Medical Center, the University and the community. The faculty support the need for continuing education in nursing as a means to improve the delivery of health care and knowledge of policies related to health care, and as a means for meeting informational needs in rural and underserved areas. Service activities often are linked to faculty research and practice interests and thus may serve as an additional resource for teaching.

Vision We are inspired by the conviction, articulated in the Alma Ata Declaration, that health is a fundamental right. We believe that the purpose of college of nursing is to provide care to the sick, injured and well people and to reduce the burden of disease, injury, and disability through the development of skilled human resources in the field of nursing. This work is guided by the following principles: social justice, interdisciplinary collaboration, a population-based focus, and a primary emphasis on prevention.

Mission The mission of College of Nursing is to advance the health of the Nepalese people by:

HOSTEL Staying in the hostel is compulsory for all students admitted to BPKIHS in order to inculcate habits of scholarship and a sense of belonging. All undergraduate students (MBBS, BDS & B.Sc. Nursing etc.) are staying in same building. Single-room accommodation is given to all students and the capacity of hostel is 1070 students. Out of which 613 are in boy's hostel and 457 are in girl's hostel. Six full furnished dinning halls and kitchens are also located inside the hostel. The students themselves supervise hostel mess. In addition to that, new hostel complex is under construction for future students. The Central Library The Central Library of BPKIHS, the quality and effectiveness of Medical and Dental Research, practice and education in different parts of the world is largely dependent on the accessibility and use of the world knowledge base. Health Sciences Library has played an important role in the great advances of medical, knowledge, research and practice. The Library is the pivotal part of any educational institution. Library is the center from where faculties, doctors, nurses, students & staff can receive knowledge to meet the needs of any institution and to advance their future career. It provides not only information to the insiders but also to the community at large. The library also provides on primary health care literature to the general public and to the villagers through the field training programmes of BPKIHS. The Central Library is well-equipped and maintained with good collection of medical books and other resources. It is providing services for 15 hours a day from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm (Sunday – Thursday). On Fridays, it opens from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm and on Saturdays, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm except on public holidays. More than 70 titles of International and Indian medical journals are subscribed to the Central Library annually. Apart from these resources, approximately 8000 biomedical health sciences free full text journals, books and medical databases are accessible from WHO/HINARI. The Electronic Information Services (EIS) has been upgraded in library installing wi-fi devices and also facilitated to have access to HINARI Resources and the Internet from residence, hostel and departments through wi-fi and LAN connections. Each department has its own

Departmental Library with essential collection of books and journals, which is updated regularly. In addition to this, the Library is conducting various activities to enhance the knowledge and skills of users for literature search, electronic information access and so on.

At this context the Central Library of BPKIHS started from 1994 and providing health information services to its user.
