    7istorical sources record that Prophet Abraham (pbuh) li"ed in Mesopotamia% The 3uran informs us that

    he and his son* Prophet Ishmael (pbuh) built the GaHbah% This confirms the historical accounts that Prophet

    Abraham (pbuh) did indeed li"e in the Middle !ast%

    The 3uran states that Prophet Abrahams (pbuh) tribe follo'ed paganism% In fact* historical sources state

    that nearl# all Middle !astern tribes at that time either 'orshipped hand$made idols or "arious celestial bodies

    (e%g%* the Moon and the &un)% !-ca"ations in Mesopotamia ha"e unco"ered information and remains of temples

    (2iggurats) built for such 'orship* as 'ell as the remains of man# stone and cla# statues%

    In short* both the historical and archaeological facts sho' that the Middle !ast* at the time of ProphetAbraham (pbuh)* 'as a pagan land% +od chose Prophet Abraham (pbuh)* b# honoring him 'ith prophethood* as

    7is pure ser"ant to represent the i"ine religion and proper moral "irtues in the midst of these misguided

    pagans%

    ur Lord re"eals that Prophet Abrahams (pbuh) tribe regarded their idols made of stone or 'ood as

    di"ine and pra#ed to them for assistance% Although de"oid of po'er and life* these pagans belie"ed that these

    idols could either harm or help them% ue to these superstitious beliefs* the# blindl# follo'ed the misguided

    belief s#stem of their ancestors and passed it on to the ne-t one%

    +od re"ealed to Prophet Abraham (pbuh) that 7e 'as the Creator of e"er#thing in the uni"erse and that

    Prophet Abraham (pbuh) turned his bac1 on his tribes traditional belief s#stem* reected its false deities* and

    and such a superior moral understanding that he finall# separated himself from them and de"oted himself to

    +od% But he did not content himself 'ith this separation alone* for he then sought to e-plain +ods e-istence to

    them and called them to belief in 7im% The people of the tribe* ho'e"er* refused to accept the truths he told

    them out of lo#alt# to their ancestors religion% As the 3uran states@
