PROPORTIONALITY (PART 1)
PROPORTIONNALITÉ (PARTIE 1)
GOALS : Situations involving proportional relationshipsLinéaritéProblems
Sinon, combien
devrais-je chausser à 18 ans ? 𝟑𝟎 × 𝟑 = 𝟗𝟎Ce qui ferait de grandes chaussures !!!
LES SITUATIONS SUIVANTES RELÈVENT-ELLES DE SITUATIONS DE
PROPORTIONNALITÉS ?
AMONG THE EXAMPLES GIVEN BELOW, WHICH CAN BE SAID TO BE SITUA
TIONS INVOLVING PROPORTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS?
1. Noémie bought 2 meters of rope which cost 2.3 € the meter.
Yes, there is proportionality between the length of rope and the price. If I buy 4
meters of rope I'll pay: 2× 𝟐, 𝟑 = 𝟒, 𝟔€
2. At the age of 6, Armand wear shoes of size 30 and at the age of 18, he
takes size 42,
No, there is no proportionality between the size and age. Otherwise, what
should be my size at 18 years? 𝟑𝟎 × 𝟑 = 𝟗𝟎
That would make great shoes!
3. A pedestrian walks at a regular pace along the banks of the Lézarde river
and makes 3.5 km in 1 h 30.
Yes, there is proportionality between the distance and the time because his
allure is regular. If he walks 7km how long will he put ?
He walks two times more km at the same regular speed, he will put two
times longer That is : 3h00
tomates. L’an passée elle a planté 12 plants et a récolté 18 kg. L’an prochain elle
4. Coralie has planted 8 tomato plants in her vegetable garden.
These have produced14kg of tomatoes. Last year, she had planted 12 plants and
had harvested 18kg. Next year she would like to plant 10 plants and she hopes to
harvest 16 kg of tomatoes.
No, there is no proportionality between the quantity of tomatoes plant and
the harvest of tomatoes.
5 During a promotional sale, one can read on a poster:
2 cakes for €6.40
5 cakes for €16
7 cakes for €22
Is it a situation of proportionality?
Solution 1 :
2 gâteaux coûtent 6,40€, 1 gâteau coûte : 𝟔, 𝟒𝟎 ÷ 𝟐 = 𝟑, 𝟐 €
o 5 gâteaux devraient donc coûter :
C’est bien le prix de l’affiche𝟑, 𝟐 × 𝟓 = 𝟏𝟔 €
o 7 gâteaux devraient donc coûter :
Ce n’est pas le prix de l’affiche.
𝟑, 𝟐 × 𝟕 = 𝟐𝟐, 𝟒𝟎 €
Il n’y a pas proportionnalité
In a situation of proportionality, to know the price of several cakes, we
multiply by the price of a cake
1st Solution :
2 cakes cost € 6.40, 1 cake costs: 𝟔, 𝟒𝟎 ÷ 𝟐 = 𝟑, 𝟐 €
o 5 cakes should cost you:
it is the price of the poster
𝟑, 𝟐 × 𝟓 = 𝟏𝟔 €
o 7 cakes should cost you:
this is not the price of the poster.
𝟑, 𝟐 × 𝟕 = 𝟐𝟐, 𝟒𝟎 €
There is no proportionality
Solution 2 :
2 gâteaux coûtent 6,40 € et 5 gâteaux coûtent 16 €
𝟔, 𝟒𝟎 + 𝟏𝟔 = 𝟐𝟐, 𝟒𝟎 €
Ce n’est pas le prix de l’affiche qui est de 22 €.
Il n’y a pas proportionnalité
In a situation of proportionality the 7 cakes price must be the
same as the price of 2 + 5 = 7 cakes, that is :
2nd Solution :
2 cakes cost €6.40 and 5 cakes cost €16
𝟔, 𝟒𝟎 + 𝟏𝟔 = 𝟐𝟐, 𝟒𝟎 €
This is not the price of the poster which is € 22.
There is no proportionality
1 DEFINITION OF THE PROPORTIONALITY
Définition :
Two quantities are proportional if it can pass from one to the
other by multiplying by the same number: the constant of proportionality.
2 PROPERTIES OF LINEARITY (CAHIER DE COURS)
When two lists of numbers are proportional, it has the following two
properties called the linearity properties
- At the sum of two numbers of a list corresponds the sum of the
corresponding numbers of the other one list.
- At the product of a number of a list by a number p, corresponds the product
of the corresponding number of the other one list, by p.
EXERCICES (CAHIER D’EXERCICES)
b) Ces grandeurs sont-elles proportionnelles ?
In the market, for grapefruit, it is displayed "€ 1,20 unit, €2
both"
a) What are the two quantities that are involved in this
statement?
b) Are these quantities proportional?
EXERCICES (CAHIER D’EXERCICES)
Exercice 1
a) The two quantities involved are the quantity of grapefruit
and the price in euro.
b) No, there is no proportionality. Indeed, if the price of the
grapefruit was proportional to the quantity purchased, then
2 Grapefruits should cost 2 times the price of 1 grapefruit,
namely € 2,40 euros and not € 2,
Exercice 2
cueillette.
One day, Sophie picked 3 kg of cherries in 45 minutes. The
next day, she picked 6 kg of cherries in 1h30min. Is the mass
of picked cherries proportional to the duration of the picking?
Justify your answer.
6 kg (double of 3 kg) have been picked in double time (45
min x 2 = 90 min = 1h30min) therefore the mass of cherry
picked is proportional to the duration of the picking.
Exercice 3
Exercice 3
Are the dimensions of the first rectangle proportional to the dimensions of
the second rectangle? Justify your answer.
To pass from the small length at the great length, we multiplied by 6:4 =
1, 5. But to pass from the small width to the wide, we multiplied by 4,
5:2, 5 = 1, 8. So, the sides size of the rectangle are not proportional to
the ones of the large rectangle.
Exercice 4
Solution 1 :
𝟏, 𝟔𝟐𝟓 × 𝟖 = 𝟏𝟑 €
o 12 tickets devraient donc coûter : 𝟏, 𝟔𝟐𝟓 × 𝟏𝟐 = 𝟏𝟗, 𝟓𝟎€
Il y a proportionnalité
In a situation of proportionality, to know the price of several tickets, we
multiply by the price of a ticke
1st Solution :
4 tickets cost € 6.50, 1 ticket costs: 𝟔, 𝟓𝟎 ÷ 𝟒 = 𝟏, 𝟔𝟐𝟓€
o 8 tickets should cost you:
it is the price of the poster
𝟏, 𝟔𝟐𝟓 × 𝟖 = 𝟏𝟑 €
o 12 tickets should cost you: 𝟏, 𝟔𝟐𝟓 × 𝟏𝟐 = 𝟏𝟗, 𝟓𝟎€
There is proportionality
Solution 2 :
4 tickets coûtent 6,50 € et 8 tickets coûtent 13 €
𝟔, 𝟓𝟎 + 𝟏𝟑 = 𝟏𝟗, 𝟓𝟎 €
Ce qui est le prix de 12 tickets.
Il y a proportionnalité
In a situation of proportionality the 12 tickets price must be the
same as the price of 4 + 8 = 12 tickets, that is :
2nd Solution :
4 tickets cost €6.50 and 8 tickets cost €13
𝟔, 𝟓𝟎 + 𝟏𝟑 = 𝟏𝟗, 𝟓𝟎 €
This is not the price of the 12 tickets.
There is proportionality
