Casing Leather(ed note: From the email bag of http://iilg.org/ and with Rons permission wehave a great discussion of leather cas-ing -- the basis of any great carving orstamping)
This can become an interesting thread. Isay this for several reasons. One, there ismuch to be said about the casing of leatherto the proper temper for carving. Muchof this depends upon the way the leatherhas been tanned.
Over my 44 years of carving, I have usedleather from many tanneries, many ofwhich are no longer in business. I foundthat the leather varied from tannery totannery as to how to case it.
For example, when I was with Tandy inthe early 1960s, the majority of carvingleather which they carried, came from the,now defunct, Bona Allen Leather Com-
pany in Buford, Georgia. Bob Ower, youwill remember this fine leather. Tandycalled it, Live Oak. It did not matterwhether the leather was 3 to 4 ounce for awallet back or checkbook cover, or, 12 to14 ounce skirting for a saddle. All youhad to do was wet the grain side, let itcome back to natural color, and set theswivel knife to it. An occasional wipingwith a damp sponge was all it took torestore that proper temper to it to con-tinue with the swivel cutting or yourstamping.
After the Bona Allen Tannery burned, and I was no longer with Tandy, Iswitched to the leather from several othertanneries, the Robert Scholze Tannery, from Chattannooga, Tennessee and theAugust Barth Leather Company of NewAlbany, Indiana. Both produced highquality leathers for all of your uses. Yet,there was much difference in the wayyou had to treat this leather to prepare itfor carving.
The leather from Robert Scholze wasmuch like that from Bona Allen. Add alittle moisture, and take off. Not that waywith the leathers from August Barth. These were very firm fibered leathers and
in order to get a good case, you neededto let it soak in warm water until thebubbles quit. Then, you rolled it up intoa heavy towel and let it case for severaldays. Then, and only then, had the fi-bers swollen enough to permit good cut-ting and stamping.
One thing to be said about this particu-lar leather, once you put the impressionsin it, they were there to stay. After thesetanneries closed, I then progressed tousing leather from Hermann Oak of St.Louis, Missouri and from Wickett andCraig, who were then located in Canada.
Again, a major difference in the leatherand the way it needed to be cased. Espe-cially, on saddle skirting. I found that myowl method of letting the leather soakuntil the bubbles quit, worked well forthe Hermann Oak, but, not so well on theWicket and Craig, unless it was on theW&C leather that had been tanned dur-
ing the winter months. Back then, foryour leather needs from W&C, you triedto stock up on leather that had beentanned during the summer. Reason be-ing, I am told, was the way the tanningvats were constructed.
The main thing that my mentors, from thepast, instilled in me was this, you need toget the fibers to swell enough to permitthem to be cut to the depth that you arewanting and to then be able to compressthose fibers, when you start stamping. Ifyou do not get this compression, then, your work is going to be shallow. Too
little moisture content, and your toolswill bounce and as the leather dries, yourimpressions will raise. To much moisturecontent, and the leather becomessquishy, and will not take a good impres-sion, and you will leave tool tracks allover it. With wet leather, you will push itaround, whether it is with the knife bladeor with the stamping tools.
Renewed WorkBenchI have something for a tip for the news-letter.
For those who are unable to have a per-manent workbench, as I was before wemoved here, I did the following. I had aWorkmate which I used constantly. Thetop as it comes is not stable enough forsome work, so I took a piece of maplebutcher block (a piece of solid core doorwould work just as good) 18" by 36" andscrewed a piece of 2X4 on one side as acleat. This is then clamped in theWorkmate's vise top. It makes a verysteady work surface. I have used minefor at least 15 years for all kinds ofprojects.

SPOTLIGHT on PRO-CARV Working and Tooling LeatherFormulation
DIRECTIONS:Dilute concentrate with water: 1 part PRO-CARV to 10 parts water is recommended for carvingand tooling. When immersing the leather for shaping or forming, add 8 oz. PRO-CARV to 3gallons of water.
NO CASING IS NECESSARY
Leather can be immersed or sponged with this solution. PRO-CARV eliminates the need tocase leather. PRO-CARV allows you to begin working with the leather after immersing for 3-5 minutes because of the very rapid penetration into even the thickest hide. Allow the surfaceto dry somewhat before beginning forming or carving.

Dale Buckenberger made this leather rose for hisMom. It only took one and a half years in themaking. He was able to give her a leaf for Mother'sDay at first and then the rose for her birthday andfinally, this Mother's Day, he gave her the finishedrose. Then he took it away to bring it to the PSLACmeeting for show and tell.

Remote Control CaddySometimes I get an idea because of a new need. We justbought a new sofa and Rich is a number one surfer with theremote controls. So with a control for the TV, Satellite Dish, and DVD, I was going crazy having all of those controls layingaround so, here comes the leather part READY?
I took a piece of heavy paper and made my pattern. Decidedhow many pockets for this caddy. Three controlsthree pock-ets. I had some suede that I thought would look good. I figuredout the spacing for the holes because sometimes I like tocrochet around suede. I used my screw punch with a largetube (4.0). On a rotary punch it would be the # 6 tube. The holehas to be big enough for the crochet hook to go through. If you make a template to mark the holes you can make thepockets by folding up the bottom and crocheting both layerstogether. As I was making this caddy I thought that I could have usedtooling leather for the pockets. I was thinking that regularlacing would be nice with tooling leather.
I realize that crocheting is not for everybody, but if you are aguy with a wife that crochets it would be a nice combinedproject for the both of you.
*Picture #1 Supplies for the project and template for holes andthe stitch I used was double crochet.
*Picture #2 So the caddy won't slip off of the arm it has to haveenough material to tuck between the cushion and armrest.Crocheting is cheaper then leather.
*Picture #3 Finished product.
Now I know where all of the controls are.Have fun with this project. Dusty Wert

Pub Work TableI was asked for details on my Pub WorkTable. I was going to draw some plans, but I thought some pictures would tellthe story.
These tables are very sturdy and take allthe abuse that a leather crafter can dishout. The secret to the sturdiness is thesolid wood construction and the specialbottom foot rest. That foot rest is fittedwith a wedge to force fit the sides to thefoot rest. You can see in picture 3 thewedge that can be pounded down totighten the sides via the foot rest.
Also, in picture 2 and 4 you can see thepair of heavy lengthwise supports forthe top.
As you can see in picture 1, the surfaceof one Pub Table is covered and clampedwith a thick plastic sheet from BoeingSurplus and the other is covered andclamped with some hardboard. Picture 1also shows how lazy I am and didnteven clean up the area to take the picture. You can also see a gray carpet square onthe hardboard to work on projects. I findthese cheap carpet squares are a nicesurface to place my stamping stone on todeaden the sound and works really niceto burnish the leather edges.
The three 2x4s are just there to set a leadtyping tray on while I was setting up anew embossing plate.
Cheers,
Bob StelmackWellingore, UK
