ReadyNAS Teaming and Failover

» Description» The ReadyNAS network teaming provides a way to aggregate the two network

interfaces into a single logical teamed, or bonded, interface. The teamed interface allows for failover support and can provide for enhanced aggregate performance over a single interface.

» Bonding Options» Round-Robin

» Transmit packets in sequential order from the first available interface to the next. This mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

» Active Backup

» Only one interface in the bond is active. A different interface becomes active if, and only if, the active interface fails. The bond’s MAC address is externally visible on only one port to avoid confusing the switch.

» XOR

» Transmit based on the default simple transmit hash policy. This mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.


ReadyNAS Teaming and Failover

» Bonding Options (continued)» Broadcast» Transmit everything on all slave interfaces. This mode provides fault tolerance.

» IEEE 802.3ad» Creates aggregation groups that share the same speed and duplex settings.

Utilizes all interfaces in the active aggregator according to the 802.3ad specification. You will need a switch that supports IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic link aggregation.

» Transmit Load Balancing» Channel bonding that does not require any special switch support. The outgoing

traffic is distributed according to the current load (computed relative to the speed) on each interface. Incoming traffic is received by the current interface. If the receiving interface fails, another interface takes over the MAC address of the failed receiving interface.

» Adaptive Load Balancing» Includes Transmit Load Balancing plus Receive Load Balancing for IPV4 traffic,

and does not require any special switch support. The receive load balancing is achieved by ARP negotiation.


Understand iSCSI

» What is iSCSI• iSCSI = Internet SCSI, allows SCSI commands to be sent over an

Ethernet network

» The benefits of iSCSI• Enable SMB to build SANs with standard equipment such as Gigabit

» iSCSI SAN• An iSCSI SAN accesses and transfers data in blocks• Each connected server sees the remote storage as a local drive

» How iSCSI works• iSCSI networks use two types of nodes:

o Initiators - the hosts requesting data from storage, and o Targets - the storage holding data

• Users can install free initiator software, widely available from sources such as Microsoft and standard Linux OS distributions

Replacing the 120mm Fan

Step 1:• Remove the 4 screws holding the side panels, and remove the panels (Green arrows)

Step 2:• Remove the 3 screws holding the 120mm fan and gently remove the fan (Red arrows)

Step 3:• Remove the fan power connector and the 4 fan screws (Blue arrows)

Step 4:• Replace the 120mm fan, reconnect the power and put all screws back in (reverse steps 3, 2, 1)


FAQ’s

Can I migrate my disks from my existing ReadyNAS to the Pro?

No. The RAID format has changed for the Pro to take better advantage of the Pro architecture.

What’s the difference between X-RAID and X-RAID2?

First, the format is different, so they are incompatible. Second, like X-RAID, X-RAID2 allows both horizontal (by adding disks to slots) and vertical (by replacing disks with higher capacity disks), however, unlike X-RAID, X-RAID2 does not require replacing all the disks for vertical expansion before expanding the volume. X-RAID2 can expand as soon as the 2nd disk is replaced. With the Pro having 6 drive bays, this allows the expansion to occur without having to replace out all 6 slots.

What’s the difference between ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer Edition and Business Edition?

The ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition comes pre-configured and pre-installed with disks and includes features suitable for the business environment, such as Active Directory, snapshot, Flex-RAID (including RAID 6), and iSCSI. The Pioneer Edition is available only as a diskless model for the advanced home enthusiasts to enjoy the accelerated performance of the ReadyNAS Pro at an affordable price.


FAQ’s

iSCSI is supported with the ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition?

Yes, with the iSCSI add-on for the Business Edition, (available shortly). Note: This will also be available as a paid add-on for the Pioneer.

Can I update from Pioneer Edition to the Business Edition?

Not at this time.

How do you power of the ReadyNAS Pro?

Push the Power Button Twice

What happens if I hold the front power button down continuously for 5 seconds while the unit is powered on?

The ReadyNAS Pro is similar to a standard PC, where holding the power button down for 5 seconds abruptly shuts the unit off (the same as pulling the power plug!). *DO NOT* power the unit off this way.


FAQ’s

If the ReadyNAS Pro hangs on bootup after an abrupt power outage, what should I do?

Use the physical power switch on the back of the unit to power off and on the unit.

Can I use the add-on modules for the NV+/1100 on the ReadyNAS Pro?

No, the Pro is based on an Intel chipset and requires add-on modules specifically compiled for this platform.
