Rebecca It all starts with a throwback in time, through the past of an unnamed woman. The only thing we know is that she is the companion of Mrs Van Hooper, an aristocratic. While they were staying in Monte Carlo, this assistant met a man whose wife had recently died, Maxim de Winter. They fell in love and, in a short period of time, they got married. They both travel to Manderley, a house in the country, propierty of the groom, unknowing the obscure secrets that the house. There, the new Mrs. De Winter felt like if the servants didn’t accept her, especially the housekeeper, Mrs Danvers. In fact, she was right; Beatrice, Maxim’s sister, told her that Mrs Danvers was very loyal to Rebecca, Maxim’s first wife. Rebecca had died drowing in a bay near Manderley one year ago and her ghost was obsessed with the honeymooners’ home. Lack of self-confidence and frightened by the housekeeper, Mrs. de Winter knew that she wouldn’t be considered as beautiful, talented or brilliant as everybody said Rebecca was. Even her own husband seemed to still being in love with his dead wife. There had always been a tradition in Manderley, to celebrate a masquerade dance each year. That year, something horrible happened. Mrs. de Winter was wearing the dress Rebecca had worn the previous year because Mrs. Danvers convinced her. She argued with his shocked husband, reproaching him that he will never love her as much as he loved his first wife. The following day, Mrs. Danvers failed in her attempt of persuading Mrs de Winter to kill herself because some divers, while exploring the zone where a ship beached, found the dead body of Rebecca. Thus, Maxim decided to tell his wife the real truth of how Rebecca died: he told her that Rebecca was rotten to the core, that had secret lifes with different affairs, including one with her cousin. Maxim killed her with a weapon when she told him that she was pregnant of her cousin, and throw her dead body into the bay. His honesty helped Mrs. de Winter to overcome Rebecca’s ghost. However, she was worried about what was going to happen with Maxim, because the police said that it seemed a suicide, but Rebecca’s cousin accused him of the murder. There was just one person, Rebecca’s doctor, that could reveal the truth: Rebecca wasn’t pregnant because she had terminal cancer, so she was
