BackgroundConcrete is not just the most commonly used construction material; it is also the most versatile construction material. It is used in the structural parts of a building to carry loading, provide support and maintain stability. It is also used in the non-structural parts to serve functional purposes of providing enclosure, partitions, sound insulation, thermal insulation, fire protection, corrosion protection and water-proofing. In recent years, various kinds of architectural concrete have also been developed for wall finishes, floor finishes and ornamental features. Needless to say, there is also the development of green concrete, with recycled waste materials used as supplementary cementitious materials, fillers and/or aggregate or with the packing density of the solid particles maximized to minimize cement consumption and carbon footprint.
Many of the afore-mentioned concretes are regarded as special concretes because they are designed for special applications. In fact, the technology employed for their production, which may be patented, is often quite different from that for normal concrete production. Special materials, such as fibers, fillers, emulsified polymer, water-repellents, viscosity modifying admixtures, expanding agents, foaming agents, coloring pigments, lightweight aggregate and certain secrete ingredients, are often added. Some of these special concretes are proprietary products and the users are just instructed to follow the manufacturers’ recommendations during application without knowing exactly why. Inadequate usage and inadequate workmanship could cause problems but most users are without expert advice.
This conference aims to address the above issues and gathers engineers, academics and building professionals to share and exchange their experiences, discuss the challenges we are facing, and report on the state-of-the-art and high-end research on special concretes.
The theme of the seminar is “Architectural and Specialized Concretes and Their Applications”. With speakers from renowned academics and practitioners, the event will address a wide variety of topics covering the development and applications of various kinds of special concretes.
