week. It didn’t last for long, but

soon covered lawns, roofs and

Nigel seems to be on the increase.

Several accidents have already occurred in-

volving trucks. North Road seems to be the

worst situation, when numbers of huge

trucks often speed up to get through the ro-

bots to get on to the Heidelberg Road. Many

of them overtake other vehicles, heading for

the Dunnottar Road, then turn in front of

them.

when the lights are turning against them.

This leaves traffic waiting to turn at the inter-

section by the hotel, little choice but to carry

on waiting until there are no trucks in sight.

Now large trucks, many carrying a huge load

of cars, is a normal site in suburban roads,

such as Kingsway. They are often so long

that traffic is held up while they try to

maneuver turning from Van Riebeeck road

into Kingsway. But the North Road route

seems to be the one which is causing motor-

ists distress and concern. Obviously the fact

that the trucks come mostly from Nigel’s in-

dustrial area is a fact. Yet in other towns this

situation has been averted by ensuring that

no heavy vehicles go through the centre of

the town. While this may not always be pos-

sible in the case of Nigel, the fact that these

huge vehicles seem to have right of way and

do not seem to have any thought for ordinary

vehicles, warrants an investigation.

There are possibly several other routes which

could be taken to get to the Heidelberg Road.

Travelling up North Road towards the

Heidelberg/Dunnottar Roads intersection has

become a nightmare for many motorists, who

find themselves overtaken by trucks, which

then revert to the other lane. In other areas of

the CBD large trucks pose a threat not only

to motorists but to pedestrians. Motorists are

fed up and says that Nigel is now known as a

“truck town”, where these vehicles seem to

be “kings of the road”, with no-one to con-

trol the situation – until a tragedy occurs.

With reference to the Rekord dated July 17,regarding “major road still in the dark”.I remember reading in one of the Ekurhulenibulletins that Germiston has erected LEDlights. This was a test run, so why can thisnot be done from Nigel through to SharonPark plus the back road in Dunnottar goingtowards Kwa Thema? Question to be put to

the council. Why now is it the residents responsibility to keep theirpavements clean, when the years prior to 1994, the municipalitycleaned the pavements. Regarding the black bins, we will be chargedfor the extra bin. There are more retirees in Dunnottar than new resi-dents. The Customer Care Centre; My son-in-law called them lastyear about cutting back their trees - no response! This is only nowbeing done – a year later. Comment about contractors cutting downthe trees – they cut off the large branches and sell them to whoeverwants.The spraying of herbicides are a “no go”. The Dunnottar ResidentsAssociation took photographs of the state of our roads/storm drainsand the general state of Dunnottar and handed them in last year. Stillno response! With reference to the Rekord dated July 31. “We wantAction”. The informal road leading from Howeson Road is also ajoke, I am a CPF member. My colleague and I went on a public holidayand tried to close the road with whatever was found in the veld.By the next morning all the stuff had been removed again and cars,trucks, taxis etc., were back using the slip road again.The motorists even put chevron tape on the lamp pole which we tookdown again. By the evening they had put the tape back. But so highyou would have to have a ladder to remove it. The property where theold drive-in was situated has become a dumping site for Dunnottarresidents.They go at night to dump their rubbish. I have come across rats in thearea and now appeal to the residents of Dunnottar not to throw theirdomestic rubbish on open stands. Before long we will be infestedwith rats. Who do we blame? Storm drains are so blocked with leaves,roads have grass and weeds growing into the tar. Will the council payfor any damage to my property. Why can’t the council cover the

manholes with con-crete blocks or slabs?No one cares! Coun-cil must rememberwho they are workingfor; The communitywho pay rates andtaxes. So we, theDunnottar commu-nity expect to seesome action. Howwould council feel ifwe start a campaignnot to pay rates andtaxes. Who will paytheir salaries? Thishas been done beforeand worked in otherareas in South Africa.

Make the best of what you have

at life from a different angle. On getting to the airport one sees somepeople who are obviously very well off and others who seem to beless wealthy. As you sit waiting for the plane to board you notice thatthere are some people who seem to be happy and others who seem tobe frustrated or even sad.As we were waiting in the duty free area we saw many who wantedmore and more and yet they never seemed to be happy. They hadmuch more than others but never seemed to be happy. They alwayswanted more. As I say so often, I am not saying that you cannot bewealthy, but I am saying that we just maybe need to be happy withwhat we have got. This reminds me of when Jesus sent the disciplesout on a mission trip and He told them not to take anything with them.What He was actually asking them to do is to be happy with whatthey have and to MAKE THE BEST OF THE TIME.This, to me, is the problem that we have in life. We always want morebut never seem to take time to make the best of what we have got. Thefact of the matter is that if we take time to be satisfied with what wehave and strive to make the best of what we have our lives will bemuch more enjoyable and as we work at this life of happiness we willfind that we get more and what we get more of we will use better.No matter what our life is, no matter what we have or have not got, ifwe strive to be happy and look at the positive side of life we will be ahappier people.As I sit in the UK and see the lifestyle of the people here I have to behonest when I say that the attitude of our children towards adults is,in my mind, much better in South Africa than in the UK. I believe thata main part of this is that in South Africa we seem to make the best ofwhat we have with pride – the pride of South Africa.But here is the challenge that I believe we in South Africa can learn. Inthe UK the families spend a tremendous time walking together (usu-ally walking a dog). This does not happen often in South Africa. Thetruth is that the homes in the UK are generally much smaller than thehomes in South Africa and so the dogs need to be taken for a walk so

that they get enoughexercise. The UKfamily makes the bestof what they have butdo not allow the situ-ation to stop themdoing what they en-joy – having animalsas pets. Let us taketwo lessons from mytrip in the UK. One isthat we make the bestof what we have (andmake a plan to allowthis to happen) andsecondly to spendmore time OUTSIDEas a family. Make thebest of your life!

Hoe word ek uitbetaal of, in versekeringsterme, skadeloos gestel?Omdat u premie betaal op die bedrag wat u gekies het, kan dit nogal probleme veroorsaakwanneer u eis uitbetaal word en dit minder is as die bedrag waarop u premie betaal het.Die rede hiervoor is eenvoudig. Die versekeringsmaatskappy het die reg om u items tevervang, kontant te skik of te herstel. As u selfoon drie jaar oud is, is die kanse goed datdit nie meer in produksie is nie. Customers of the Ekurhuleni Metro are be-

ing called upon to use electricity wisely and

help alleviate the load on the network in view

of the cold weather.

Extreme cold weather sees large spikes in the

use of electricity and creates supply chal-

lenges for distributors, when networks are

overloaded for short periods of time.

Overloading causes the electricity grid to trip

out, leaving people with no electricity at the

worst times.

In the light of a cold front that has gripped

the country and temperatures which dropped

below freezing and snowfalls around

Ekurhuleni, the electricity network has come

under extreme pressure as communities try to

son, Sam Modiba says “We appeal to all our

customers to use electricity wisely by doing

a number of practical things, such as reducing

the number of electrical appliances that are

on at a given time.

“Where a heater is being used, doors and win-

“Switch off the geyser and take a bath.”

These are just a few of the ways to save elec-

tricity. Modiba says the municipality urges

residents to be cautious when dealing with

heat sources as most fires are caused by neg-

ligence and lack of understanding towards

heat sources. The message is loud and clear -

save electricity and avoid being without it!

waarskynlik deur die versekeraars in ag

geneem word.

heidsfonds van die Prokureursorde ontvang

nadat hy dit vroeër in trust by die geskorste

Nkosi is vroeër hierdie jaar van die rol

verwyder, o.m. weens wanaanwending van

trust geld. Adv. Coetzee het die R406 000 in

trust by Nkosi geplaas in afwagting van die

oordrag van grond vir ‘n ontwikkeling in die

dorp. Coetzee het breed geglimlag toe Rekord

navraag gedoen het oor die manier waarop

reg en geregtigheid geskied het maar wou

niks verder sê nie. Nkosi was die regsverteen-

Meals on Wheels (MOW) strives to support the needy for many ofyears.They are now organizing a “fundraising art competition”, trying tofind young art talent in the attempt to compile a 2013 calendar. Allschools within Heidelberg, Nigel and other surrounding towns hadtime till 31 July to hand in their art works dealing with Deeds ofKindness. The winners will be announced on 23 August at Sedaven.While planning the programme we discovered “CJ Cielie Drama Stu-dio” who will feed the soul with acts of comedy and drama of youngupcoming artists.“Talent Development Agency” will also take part in ballet, Spanishdance and other creative dancing from the age of 2 years and older,”says Zerua Wessels of MOW.Prominent artists donated paintings and others donated a traditionalfruit cake, porcelain dolls dressed in traditional outfits, a self madesmok dress, freshly baked Hertzog cookies and more. Thirty minutesare allocated to an auction of these articles. A light supper will beavailable at a small cost while the children enjoy a jumping castle.Then the “highlight” of the evening will be the announcement of thewinners by the judges for the 2013 calendar.A promising evening will be on the 23 August 2012 at 18h00 at SedavenYouth Centre. MOW art competition gets cultural form

One of the beautiful art works that has been submitted for

the MOW (Meals on Wheels) Art Competition.

A second work which was received for the competition.

Nigel will be one of the East Rand SPCA’s toparticipate in the annual “Animal Run” bybikers on September 2, by having a stall atthe event and being able to share profits madewith the other SPCA’s.The event will start at the GermistonHyperama and finish at the Carnival BaseballClub, where all the fun will be. The objectivesare to create an opportunity for the motorcy-cle community to demonstrate their supportof the SPCA’s on the East Rand and generatefunds and resources to place the organiza-tion in a stronger position to fight cruelty toanimals. Several important and urgent questions have been made to the MECof Agriculture and Rural Development, regarding the managementat the Marievale Bird Sanctuary.The questions posed by Nigel and Sharon Park DA Clr WallyLabuschagne are: Is there a management problem at the MarievaleBird Sanctuary, relating to the overgrowing of reeds affecting theecology of the sanctuary? What is the cause of this problem andwhat are the potential consequences if this issue is not dealt with?Labuschagne also asked what the MEC intended to do about thesituation and is there a management plan and budget available to dealwith this issue. Questions have also been put to the MEC by theNigel councilor regarding security at the bird sanctuary.They were: “Is the MEC aware of the allegations that the MarievaleBird Sanctuary is a staging point for criminals to strip assets of theneighbouring Aurora (Grootvlei) Mine? The MEC has been askedwhat steps are being taken to co-operate with the police in this regardand what security is in place to protect the provincial assets of theMarievale Bird Sanctuary. Regarding co-operation with communityorganisations to help manage the sanctuary, Labuschagne posed thefollowing questions to the MEC: Is the department co-operating withany local partner, to help manage the sanctuary? Is there any form oflong-term plan being developed to manage it? In what way are com-munity partners involved? Can a copy of any such plan be provided?Labuschagne says he is deeply concerned about the present state ofthe Marievale Bird Sanctuary, which is a major tourist attraction andshould not be allowed to deteriorate.

taken to MECEnd off Ratanda crisisThe re-connection of pre-paid power supply to certainhouseholds in Ratanda, is the only hurdle that has to beovercome before Lesedi Local Municipality and RatandaCommunity Forum reaches a final solution to the prob-lems that left Ratanda in chaos during March this year.In what seemed to be a full out drive to lift the mayor fromher seat, an orgy of destruction, riots, raging tempers anda flaming hell, almost destroyed the whole infrastructureof about R60 mill, including social services.In a frank and open discussion about the whole matter,Mr. T. S. Moremi, Speaker of Lesedi Local Council, saidthe matter of re-connecting power to debt burden house-holds, leaves the Council in a very precarious position.Electricity had risen abnormally high at the beginning ofthe year and political opponents of the Mayor, Cll. LeratoMalaka chose to use this issue to get rid of her. The op-ponents mainly consist of disgruntled members of theANC. One has already been expelled by the ANC GautengProvincial Executive Committee PEC from the ANC, an-other Councillor’s disciplinary hearing is pending and 18others are also due for the same hearing scheduled forthe 10 August 2012. Rumours are that disgruntled mem-bers are preparing for further marches and actions.In March after visiting the area, Mr. Richard MasenyaniBaloyi, National Minister of Co-operative Governance andTraditional Affairs directed that Lesedi had to restore elec-trical power to the houses of people with pre-paid meters,not withstanding other outstanding services bills thatthey might have. Following the Minister’s instruction,Council took a resolution that the power should be re-connected. However, this is easier said than done. TheRatanda Community Forum wants Eskom to take over theservices in order to “cut out” the municipality. Eskom,however, finds itself in the difficult position where it isindeed delivering “reticulated” power to households incertain areas – but that was simply due to Municipalitiesnot being able to paythem billions of Randin outstanding debt.Eskom even took overthe infrastructure aspart of their “re-imbursement.” Byselling directly to thepublic, Eskom is try-ing to recoup thelosses it suffered.With Lesedi the situ-ation has alwaysbeen that it is a goodpayer and never beenin such a bad positionas the municipalitiesreferred to.

Eskom will therefore have to buy the Lesedi infrastruc-ture in order to consider selling “reticulated” power toRatanda. An additional expense to Eskom in the case ofLesedi would be to take over the infrastructure at extramillions of Rand.The decision of the Minister has thus left Lesedi’s Coun-cil in a very difficult situation and Lesedi is looking for-ward to his promised visit to Ratanda to explain the situ-ation to residents. Lesedi is of the opinion that thereshould only be one comprehensive bill for all services. Not many people know that there is a place

in Hallgate, Nigel, where people from 18

years upwards are helped to make new lives

for themselves.

The premises, formerly a farm, have been

converted into what is now the Freedom Re-

covery Centre. The name says it all. It caters

for those who are addicted to alcohol and

drugs and the main thing is that people go

there of their own free will and not with any

court order. It was founded by Pastor Derick

Matthews who says, “When I saw the land

I just knew I had to open up a re-habilitation

centre there”

That was four years ago and his enthusi-

asm has not waned nor has he ever looked

back. The centre has been an amazing suc-

cess and does not only cater for local peo-

ple but for those who come from as far as

Durban and Pretoria etc.

When DRC opened it’s doors in December

2008 it was just Pastor Derick and his par-

ents, Martie and Cyril – plus a dream to help

as many people as they could to regain their

freedom from addiction. Five addicts started

at the centre, who all wanted to break from

their past. At first the homestead on the

smallholding was enough but soon the need

became so high that a stable had to be con-

verted into sleeping quarters.

Today FRC has the capacity for 40 full-time

recovering addicts – or residents as they

are known at the centre. Pastor Derick has

been in the re-hab facility for 13 years. From

a young age he knew it was the field he

wanted to work in. FRC accommodates peo-

ple on six month, three month and six weeks

programmes. The six month programme is

divided into two levels. Residents reflect on

where they are coming from and breaking

with the past. On the second level they fo-

cus on where they are going to.

Various other aspects come into this course,

such as group therapy, health and nutrition

and emorional healing, to name a few. Once

they have an option to enter into a third

phase where they act as coaches to other

recovering addicts. One resident who lost a

leg as a result of a heroin overdose, turned

his life around and is now gearing himself

to raise awareness at schools about drugs

and how they affected his life. “In this type

of ministry we deal with life and death on a

daily basis,” says Pastor Derick.

“At FRC we believe that in most cases ad-

diction is a plaster that is put over a deeper

sore,” says Pieter Stols, a counselor at the

centre. Sometimes there are serious under-

lying issues, such as abuse, neglect or

trauma, wich need treatment.”

The FRC is grateful for sponsorships and

looks to the future when extensions will be

made to FRC. Residents have weekends free

and days when parents can visit. They have

formed their own sports activities and al-

though three healthy meals are provided,

some of the residents also love the opportu-

nity to cook in their own kitchen, recently

retiled by the Nigel Rotary Anns.

They attend church in Nigel and no-one

forces them to go, they all want to go. If you
